The Biltong Man Biltong 100g $6.99 @ ALDI

580

I’m not a biltong expert, but I do love jerky, so I gave this a crack. It’s REALLY nice. Not sure what the story is with it, but a quick google search suggests it’s a boutique type product that is occasionally picked up by Aldi as a ‘special buy’ as opposed to being made by Aldi. It was definitely nicer than the stuff I’ve bought from deals here from biltong direct.

Also, the 100g is a decent size serving compared to the 40-45g of jerky getting around for the same price. From what I can remember there was chilli and traditional available.

Wouldn’t usually post something random like this, but it was delicious. Highly recommended.

Just trying to picture this "Biltong Man" superhero…

$70/kg is pretty standard for biltong isn't it?

    • +1

I think it was $5.99 actually. If your next question is ‘$60 is pretty standard for Biltong isn’t it?’ My answer is i’ve Got no idea, but it was really nice

      • No, $59 is a good price for great biltong :)

    • +1

Not sure about other biltong but direct if you buy 10 packs will get you that price point.

One packet for the Aldi price seems pretty good then. After the crappy Geronimo jerky lately (I bought 30 packs, I should know) this stuff was a nice change.

        • +4

Yep geronimo have dropped their game. Never again from me nothing but disappointment on the last 3 promos. One of which took an exceptionally long time to get delivered (had 5 other orders of jerky/biltong delivered in the time it took for them to fulfil my order).

        • +3

@CHUNK: agreed my Geronimo orders (60 packets in total) have all been incredibly thin and brittle. Tasteless because the sauce or whatever it is can’t settle in the meat. Not even worth the cash at 50% off. It’s a huge bummer. I’m buying jerky at the local butcher for $99/kg now

        • Agreed, we used to love their jerky but lately it's so chewy and dry.

My mate suggested I try Riverina Jerky, ordered a sampler pack, amazing, best jerky I've had in forever. Not cheap though.

  • Nice!

  • a true ozbargainer would shoot it and carve it himself.

There hasn’t been any deals on bullets lately, only guns.

      • Bow & Arrow? Make your own from wood.

Kids try to steal the jerky at the local Aldi. They head right for it, then walk out buying a chupa-chup. Protein and sodium are good for them right?

    • Noted.

I am pretty fortunate in that I live pretty close to the South African Shop here in Melbourne. You can get fresh biltong (dry, mediumn or wet) for about $65.00 a kilo and they will cut it on the spot for you to your desired thickness. They stick it in a brown paper bag so you can start scoffing the highly addictive cured meats as you walk out the door - priceless!

    • Gimme an address, dude! That sounds fantastic.

      • +1

        461 hawthorn rd, I think.

      • There is another in Templestowe:
Shop 7&8 Upper Level Templestowe Village Shopping Centre,
        112 James Street, Templestowe

    • Same except in Brisbane

    • I am also in that fortunate situation, their Biltong has become a staple at my house and we can't stop eating it! The Stokkies are fantastic as well at $80/Kg.

  • What if anything in this stuff could be bad for you - chemical-wise? I have eaten a fair bit in my time.

    • +2

I have South African mate who makes biltong but not often enough to satisfy my needs. It pretty much meat, vinegar, pepper, salt and corriander (maybe some chilli if desired). He typically wind dries it in converted fridge but most commercially made ones are done in commercial dehydrators. If done properly, it is probably the safest of the cured meats.

Biltong is actually a pretty healthy snack - as hotmumbo points out, there are no chemicals or artificial flavours. It's simply meat that is usually (every butcher has their own "secret" recipe) soaked in vinegar, rolled in a herb and spice blend (lots of salt, pepper, lots of coriander, brown sugar as a base then chilli or whatever other flavour you want to make) and air dried - commercially this happens in massive drying machines that look like fridges.

Biltong was invented as a way of storing meat without refrigeration - something that was essential in the hot South African climate. It's pretty much all protein.

Sometimes, it's dried out completely and sold as "stokkies" (translates to little sticks) - in South Africa it's common to give this to kids who are teething - they can gnaw on it all day and get some goodness out of it as well!

The stuff Aldi sells is made by a guy based in Mascot - he also has a couple of butcheries and I'm a very loyal customer - I've tried lots of different biltongs from lots of different butchers in store and online - this one is the best in my humble opinion. In store you can buy biltong made from Wagyu - now that is like pure heaven in brown paper bag…

      • Good to know. You’re right about the quality. I was blown away, hence the post. Thanks mate

      • It's pretty salty and it clogs you up. Polished off a kg ($79) over the weekend with missus. We normally go to the Saffa shop in Templestowe. So it's not 100% healthy so moderation is advised. Chilli is the best best.

      • Where's the address of the guy in Mascot? Do they have a shop-front?

        • I don't think there is a shopfront at Mascot although I might be wrong. If you can get to Lane Cove or Dural he has butcheries in both where he sells biltong fresh.

        • @macfudge:

Can you post or PM me the Lane Cove locations

      • Thanks - I will still try and consume in moderation but great to know!

  • Anyway of telling what Aldi stocks these? every time I look for these specials it's sort of hit and miss

    • This was at Kotara in Newcastle. Plenty of stock there. I’d say at least 50 packs on display.

  • +1

Honestly I couldn't recommend Biltong Man's Drywors (green packet) enough. If I had have known earlier today that Aldi had gotten some more in stock I would've just about cleaned them out.

    • I'd never tried his Droewors before this time around. I find people who don't like biltong tend to like Droewors.

The biltong man's Droewors was wet which was interesting (I am more of a dry guy) but I found compared to the authentic stuff from South Africa or even some South African butchers, it was a bit bland. Would've liked some more spice.

Still good though and every year I stock up when Aldi has this stuff.

  • Just for the record, nothing is actually "made" by ALDI. It's all private label from selected manufacturers that they choose to work with.

    • Yeah ok I kinda assumed that but meant it doesn’t have the Aldi packaging or Aldi markings on it

  • Is man biltong safe, healthy or even legal!?

I think I'll stick with beef.

Found the nutritional facts for you. Why wouldn't it be legal?

      • +1

because he thinks it's man biltong

oooh whoosh that went way over my head haha

    Meat is murder

    • +1

      Mmmm, murder, tasty, tasty murder….

Only saying as I used to have a T-Shirt with this on it - was fun hanging around the vegetarian restaurants wearing it :-)

    • Is that you Morrissey?

  • It's $6.99 not $5.99. Saw this post and went out and bought some straight away. Still worth it though :)

  • +1

If I soak the jerky in water, will it turn into full-sized pieces of steak if I leave it for long enough?

    • +1

You may find that it rehydrates into other animals LOL

  • Can confirm this guy makes his biltong in Sydney as a friend used to work at the Potts Point and Rocks market selling for another company and knows them.

    It's really good stuff!

  • Yeah there's a guy in western Sydney that does Biltong for around $40/kg
He has a killer dried sausage too for cheap

    • Details?

      • I'm horrible with directions and locations.

I just know there's a massive market on saturdays or sundays in western sydney (Blacktown area I think)
and there's this South African guy who has a tiny stall and sells a few South African products along with some awesome Biltong and Droëwors

      • +1

        That’s sounds like Parklea markets

A couple Minutes drive from him is an Sa shop with everything from biltong, boerwoers, to chappies and black label.
        https://www.biltongandboerewors.com.au/

I don’t work for them or know the owners, but regularly drive there from the city for my fix

        • Bingo
          That's it.

          Parklea markets.

I didn't know about the shop though, thanks!

  • This stuff is pretty good but Biltong To Go are still the best.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/biltong.com.au

  • The jerky from Aldi is absolutely gross and the biltong I tried was pretty ordinary too. Will give it a miss.

  • +1

    I make my own. .
So I'm pretty Lucky!!! I'm ex Rhodesian and have done so my whole life

    • Good man. I'm South African (only qualify for Aussie citizenship next year) and my parents owned two biltong stores back in RSA. Talk about a lekker gig! As a general rule I avoid pre-packaged biltong or droëwors from stores. Often has it has extra preservatives to keep it from going hard too quickly. I tried this biltong before and it was soft for pre-packaged biltong (unlike the biltong Coles stocks) however it is clearly treated with something.

For Aussies who want the real deal go to a Saffa shop that makes biltong from C-grade beef. It has way more flavour and requires less spice. C-grade is simply an older cow/bull. An easy way to spot this is if the fat is more yellow than white. A-grade beef has a very white creamy fat and is often used as it's more common because it is tender. Think steaks. 99% of biltong is made from the silverside cut which isn't used for much else but corned beef.
As you can imagine it would be difficult to get a C-grade silverside so don't hold it against them if they don't have it.

  • Wasn't this 5.99 last night?

  • How does it compare to Hydale?

    • +1

Huddle is crap like jack links jerky or whatever it is. This Biltong is quality

      • Good to hear. I bought Biltong Man.

    • Hydale is a "wet" and lower quality jerky.
