Cue the negative opinions about the Pixel 2 from people who have never owned or used one…

    • +40

And what about those that have had 2 RMAs and on their third, still with issues. Meanwhile in the process of RMAing their wifes P2XL too…

      • +8

Do you always speak about your wife in the third person?

        whats been the issue/s?

      • What issues you had? I've got burn in, no touch sensitivity on the corners and buzzing speaker. I'm considering taking back to JB.

        • Hmmmm yea I got buzzing speaker on my 3rd device now. Although given how many other issues I had I'm scared of getting another dud. See above message for my issues.

I would try it with jbhifi.

      • +5

Have done 1 RMA and will need to do more. Do your research before buying this phone:

        Speaker buzz
Android Auto freeIng (there are huge forums on this but Google isn't responding)
Super low bitrate audio on Android auto
1st headphones jack converter didn't work
        Unlock with assistant doesn't work

        • My second headphone dongle has just died too. I'm running Android P Beta, and stupidly they won't replace it until i put my phone back on stable. Even though I tried the dongle on my wifes P2XL and it doesn't work, also tried on my Macbook and doesn't work, meanwhile my wifes headphone dongle works fine on all devices, so clearly it's broken and has nothing to do with my phone.

          ARGH I HATE GOOGLE SUPPORT!!!!

        • +2

          @OnlinePred:

How crazy is it that they cheaped out on the headphone dongle considering people were already angry about losing a headphone jack

        • @monkeynews: Blows my mind. I hope there is a class action against them. Will jump in on that.

      • +12

"RMAing their wifes" or "RMAing their wife's"?
If its the first one, please share the details. I didn't even know that was an option.

        • +6

You'll probably just get a refurb not a new one. Might be better off sticking with the current one.

        • hahahahaha! Damn you grammar!!! WHY?????

        • Was yours DOA?

        • Mine's definitely out of warranty.

        • @OnlinePred:
Leave hiss elders out of it.

        • There should be a return to base warranty if DOA. I swear some people have nothing inside and they are just a shell.

    • +9

      "screen burn in"
      "Blueish tint"
      "Way too big for me"
      "Costs too much"

Hopefully I've knocked them all off in one go :)
Btw I've had my Pixel 2XL since early March (Telstra) and I am loving it, haven't had any problems.

      • +1

Damn it! You got the good one! I picked my p2xl on Telstra from JB. I got a few duds though. Still not entirely happy.

        • Haha I picked it up from a smaller Telstra store if that's any difference?

Thought of two small niggles actually but more to do with software - wallpaper randomly changing although I don't set it to daily and the display randomly lighting up even though there are no notifications.

Also some random app crashes as of the latest patch but that's nothing uncommon.

        • @pennypincher98: Hmmm. The one thing I'm hoping is update related, is my screen won't turn on while I'm on a call. Tried factory reset and no luck, so I can't turn speaker on or hung up at the moment.

        • @OnlinePred: That's strange, so you can't even access the keypad if you need? My camera app was crashing a bit but a simple restart solved that.
Fingers crossed for the June update!

        • @pennypincher98: Screen won't turn on no matter what I do while I'm on a call

      • +1

Same here. Since getting the telstra $59 Pixel 2XL back in March, no issues with my phone. Best camera ever!

        • +1

Yeah even after 3 months the camera never fails to amaze me with every shot it takes. Goes toe to toe with even the S9.

    • +4

lol can't be worse than the shit iPhones get on here

      • -3

        bcuz they are shit

    • +1

I guess all the reviewers that didn't like it were wrong!!

    • buzzing speaker +1 here
iphone 3 - 7 user in past many many years, got pixel xl 2 last xmas from jb's deal.
took 1 week to used to it and Now I am no longer miss iphone.

    • I had one. It was a good phone, just not worth that insane price point. Also the throttling that occurs when it tries to save your battery I found to be a bit overboard at times, where the phone would randomly slow down for no apparent reason.

Also had a lot of issues with apps such as Android Auto, and the built-in "Smart Lock", randomly no longer working properly, and a reboot would be required. Got to the point where I would have to reboot once a day to resolve one issue or another.

Your mileage may vary, but I just found too much maintenance being required in the end, so I sold it.

      • +9

I think its guys that desperately needs some form of validation that keeps using lame jokes like those.

        • +3

  • -4

No deal, the $49 plan deal was better

    • +14

      There.was.never.a.$49.Pixel.2.XL.plan.FFS.

      • +7

His comment is getting upvoted even though there’s never been a $49 plan deal 😂

        • +5

What are you talking about? Just ask for $10 off after signing up because other people are paying less. I did. Also, I asked for more data. Currently paying $49/month with 30GBs for a Pixel 2 XL. It pays to ask.

        • @TristanJ: was that with 25gb allowance as well?

        • @georgedn: I started with $59/MTH with 15GB allowance, came with a free Google Home Mini & Headphones. From there I simply chat with Telstra for an easy $10/MTH discount & 5GB of extra data. That discount is practically a certainty unless you give up easily. Just don't take no for an answer. Repeat your request again and again and again. Ask for their manager if they can't help. The other 2 X 5GBs of bonus data came from just asking and not accepting no on the chat line. I do wonder if I can get more though? I wonder if there is a limit? So far I've only relied on explaining that my imaginary friend got the same deal and so I should get it too. Never has Telstra asked for details of this friend. They just believe.

      • +5
        • Yeah that's what I'm on. Wow I had no idea that got up to 707 upvotes!!!

        • +2

$59 deal with $10 monthly port-in credit for lucky one..

        • @pyramid:

          Yep i managed this

        • @pyramid: ahh yes, that's why I had $49 in mind

        • +1

@pennypincher98: Why 707 upvotes? Because you pretty much get the pixel phone for FREE by going on the $49 plan

so that's why this bargain here is a bad deal.

        • +2

@pyramid: got it after the 4th telstra live chat

        • @pyramid: $10 port in credit as well as $10 credit for not being able to get the OneDrive subscription as advertised for both my wife and myself so we are on a $39/m plan

        • @tryagain:
Was the "10 credit for not being able to get the OneDrive subscription" a one off or monthly credit?

        • +1

@Joe888: Monthly, it was still being advertised when I signed up and had intended on using it, their deal with Microsoft had already finished though but they had forgotten to pull the advertising, thankfully they had sent an email with it after we signed up so that I could prove that they were still offering it at the time of sign up.

    • May I ask how you managed to get it on a $49 plan? I'm paying $59 per month and they refuse to budge on that price.

      • Coz he’s Bs. Don’t bother

    • I'm on the $49 plan too (well $43 ATM because of their glitch) but I do think that this is a good price for this model outright.

      • What glitch - please tell me more.

        • There was the $10 port in credit and now they keep trying to charge me for Apple music (which should be free) so I get an extra credit on that for some unknown reason bringing it down to about $43..

    • you mean $49 WITH 25gb data allowance? :D:D:D:D:

      • Yea some were lucky enough to get $49 with 25gb :-) but some even more lucky ones (not me unfortunately) managed to score $200 JB vouchers for switching plans on top of that!

        • Oh yes!!!!..i did not take risk of going for $200 vouchers…

        • that wld be us, sweet sweet deal :)

        • +1

I got both gift card and 25gb lol

        • Yep, I got 27Gb and $200 (x2)

  • Can I just ask, objectively, how does the Pixel 2 XL compare to the original Pixel XL? Barring the screen:body and the camera?

    • +1

      Has a headphone jack.

      • You mean it doesn't have a headphone jack!

        • +1

I meant the original Pixel XL does :)

    • +3

I went from a Pixel XL to a Pixel 2 XL and haven't regretted it at all.
The Pixel 2 XL is an upgrade in every respect to the Pixel 1 XL.
Most noticeably i immediately found it faster when using the phone, animations were smoother/snappier and simply just seemed to be lag free.

Funnily enough, i never found my Pixel 1 to be laggy until i compared them side by side before switching.

      • See this is the sort of thing I'd be concerned about because if I got a Pixel XL, I wouldn't know how much smoother the Pixel 2 XL is without comparing them side by side and the headphone jack only makes it a more appealing option. That and the display issues that plagued this year's phones doesn't make it sound good. I'll mull it over but thanks guys! Perhaps I'll find out about these RMA cases to delve further. It also occurs to me that the OG Pixel XL gets unlimited Google Photos storage as well.

        • I don't understand why attaching a ponytail style USB C adapter to your existing headphone cable and using it as usual is such a big issue …

        • Don't forget that the OG pixel xl battery life is terrible right now after all the updates.

        • +3

@Diji1: Because they're flimsy, don't work on the first attempt most of the time, and usually require me to reboot my phone with it attached for it to detect properly. This is a widespread issue and one that's completely avoidable by just including a headphone jack. Smart for Google though - they have a new revenue stream out of selling dongles, just like Apple..

    • OG pixel xl screen is noticeably better

      • +2

But keep in mind the screen is not as good as the Samsung galaxy s9+. Mind you the Pixel XL 2 has slightly better battery life and better AI for photo image processing, which means better looking photos with an inferior camera. S9+ has bloatware, which you can hide or get rid of with hacks, of course. However, the S9+ has a better processor. Now go forth and decide which one you will get.

        • I had both and stick with the pixel but only for the camera. Everything else on the s9+ was better, except maybe the battery life and snappyness of the software, but was close

        • +1

@jjsnacks: Yea literally camera is maybe the only thing. Miss out on optical zoom (much better than digital on pixel), better screen, stereo speakers, waterproof, bigger screen smaller footprint, will have updates for longer than OG Pixel. And loads of software features like dual audio/dual messaging/secure folder etc etc etc. The OG pixel doesn't compete with S9.

        • +2

          @OnlinePred:

I know you've had some bad experiences with the Pixel but lets not get hasty on the Galaxy praise.
Every year I hear and read the same BS about Galaxy's and every 1-2 years I get to try the current Galaxy at the time courtesy of my Samsung loving wife and its the same old shit. Some nice features, some industry leading features ruined by bloat, other caveats and that god awful saturation on what is otherwise the best phone display.

My wifes S8 is so bad 1 year on, it was already noticeably slower than vanilla droid straight out of the box but it just got worse day by day. I actually can't handle using her phone, it makes me rage!

FWIW, I had an OG Pixel XL and got a Pixel XL 2 at launch.
The OG Pixel XL was the best phone I've ever owned, not a single issue in the 12 months I used it and still running as good as the day I first turned it on happily being under utilised by my old man. Never reset the android install or anything.

Pixel XL2 is good too, my only issue has been with the GPS but that has been rectified with settings tweaks.

Also, will have updates longer than S9?
OG Pixel will have monthly security updates for a while.
I guess they were released 18 months apart so S9 might get Android Q while OG Pixel probably won't but come on, I've never heard anyone talk up Samsung's updates vs a Nexus/Pixel phone lol!

        • @h0mbre: uh then you haven't been reading much into it. Galaxy S5 is still getting security updates. Samsung is the only company to continue security updates for phones older than 4 years. Security patches are generally a few weeks behind, while major updates are guaranteed but a few months behind. Hopefully this will change with S9 and project treble. We still use s8 at work on Oreo and there is nothing wrong with them compared to og pixel xl. If it's that slow perhaps to a factory reset? Also why the hell don't you put the screen on basic to get more accurate colours than pixels lol. Just like pixel you have the option to change screen saturation, only difference is s8 had way more options and RGB customisation plus it has a far more accurate screen when on basic mode.

          https://www.xda-developers.com/samsung-galaxy-s9-aosp-androi…

Also, how is the s8? Apparently it's still working, so it's doing better than my 3x p2xls I've had. Can you use the phone? Does Bluetooth work? Can you make calls on it? Can you use the phone while on a call?

      • +1

Ive got the original Pixel XL, and coming from a Note 4 I thought the screen was a bit of a stepdown. Phone is an improvement in every other way though and when it comes time to replace this I will definitely be looking at the current iteration - very happy with my original purchase.

    • Seems to be significantly more complaining related to the pixel 2 xl. a lot more, so much so that its almost as if it is by people with apple shares.

  • +18

Negative opinions of most products are over represented, this is one of them.

I've had this phone since January, it is the best phones I have ever owned, and I would buy it again.

I've had no issues what so ever, most of the "popular" issues with this phone were when the phone was first released, and were promptly addressed by Google.

    • +7

      I completely agree, I love my PX2L, it's a beast.

      • Same. No dramas.

    • +1

I've had mine 5 months got burn in, buzzing speaker and touching the bottom corners doesn't register (was like that from day one). Do you have any of these issues at all?

      • I had the corner touching thing but that was a software issue, it was resolved with an OS upgrade.

    • Nonetheless, some reviewers pointed out major sisues with the device.

      • Initial batch did seem to have a lot of issues. However those issues have either been addressed with software updates or by contacting Google support for returns within warranty.

    • What phone did you come from?

    • -1

Yep, let's just ignore all the issues others are having because my one example is fine to me. Let's not push Google to better their standards or hardware quality, because my one phone is fine. Great logic right there.

  • -2

    This is cheap.
