1490

Virgin mobile is being shut down by Optus so Optus is offering discounted plans for Virgin Customers who port their numbers over.

I just signed up to:

$25 OPTUS My Plan Plus 12M SIM (Special Promo)

  • Unlimited standard national talk, SMS & MMS
  • 10GB of Data to share
  • Unlimited standard international SMS & MMS (To selected countries)
  • Up to 250 minutes for standard international calls (To selected countries)
  • Data-free video streaming (Netflix, ABC iview)
  • Data-free music streaming (Spotify, Google Play)
  • Optus Sport (World Cup, PL)

Not bad as I signed to Virgin a month ago using the following Ozbargain deal (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/374205)

They waved the early exit fees on the Virgin Contract (I was on my 2nd month of a 12 month SIM only $26 contract)

Lots of other deals for Virgin Customer outlined here: https://www.gizmodo.com.au/2018/05/optus-are-offering-these-…

Phone + SIM only plans available

Be nice, its my first post

  • what's the price on 40g & 60g ? the image top got cut off

    is it $50 for 40g , and $60 for 60g ?

if so, this is cheaper than voda & telstra data sim

but still no better than past deal at $52.50 with 140gb

  • It said i still got 7 months contract and $277 left… which cancellation fee apply if i am switching from virgin to optus

    • +3

If you wait till you have 6 months left (between 18 and 24 months), there will be no fees at all.

  • +2

No data roll-over from what I've read w optus in FAQs, big one for me. Reckon I'll wait until contract expires next year. Thanks op.

  • +1

Just a heads up, a near identical plan is available for everyone with no catches from Jeenee mobile.

  • I'm currently on $32 for 24gb at Virgin.
The closest I've seen at Optus recently is $40 for 30gb sim plan so I might just wait for that to come around again

    • Do you recall how long ago that was?

  • +6

    great news!

We're able to waive the $0.07 cancellation fee on your current Virgin Mobile service

    • aren't you grateful?

    • +4

      $0.07

      Why hello there Mr. Bond

    • At what stage does it come up and say that?

      • From the link posted on an earlier comment page 1.

  • I’m currently on 7gb a month at $30. They offered me 15gb at $30.
Was tempted to switch to TPG 10gb (1/2 price for 6 months) but this is a bit more tempting

  • +3

    No data gifting on Optus:(
    No data rollover on Optus:(

    • +4

      No virgins on Optus:(

      • SIM sluts galore? No, they are mostly on Vodafone network.

    • optus got data share ?

      • Only in between different numbers under the same 'account'

  • Even less competition… sigh.

    • Well I mean Virgin was fully owned by Optus so

  • +1

I switched from Virgin to Optus back in last year Sep, one of the reason was the slow 4G network and the continuous lack of signals, so I was hoping it will be better since Virgin uses Optus network as one of my friend (Optus employee) says she has no disconnections when she uses Optus network whatsoever. After the switch, the 4G seems to be even slower (lags even more or simply doesn't load when I try to watch Instagram videos) and the signal got worse. I haven't even mentioned all the trouble that I've gone through to sign up with Optus, would not recommend.

    • +2

You switched from Virgin to Optus, but they both use the same network?

      • Yes because they prioritise Optus customers first, at least that was what my Optus friend told me smh

        • +3

Nope, no difference between the two.

    • You need to switch to KOGAN man !!!!

    • +1

      I did similar..
Speed test Optus against Virgin on same phone back to back.
I rechecked it but Virgin on the optus network was faster.

  • +4

    Ill miss being a Virgin

  • im on contract with a phone till october, should i be talking to optus or virgin to get my ETF waived and sign up with optus?

EDIT: dont worry im an idiot cant read. it said it right there on the top of the page. got 204 bucks waived XD

I cant believe that Optus owned Virgin yet the customer service experience was totally opposite. We had been on Virgin originally with a phone plan. Contract finished and then tried to get a better deal to stay with them, but didnt. Then moved to Optus. Hopeless. The billing is horrendous and difficult to understand. They over charged me and then took forever to rectify. Went back to Virgin. So much better. Will stay with them till the contract sim finishes and see how it goes from there. Will wait for Optus offer to move, but suspect wont. Partner has already said that if we go to Optus I have to deal with CS. That wont be fun. Oh and their porting was hopeless. Would assume their CS hasnt changed.

For those that have switched. Check your billing and get straight onto CS to correct. Ie you call them about one thing and if the person on the line cant help you you get transferred and have to go through line to get action. At least Virgin CS the one person you speak to first is the one that follows up.

    • I've never needed to speak to CS since I signed up, everything is as it should be.

      • Its fine when its working. When its not CS will be difficult to deal with from my experience.

    • +1

Had a similar experience on multiple occasions. Optus had horrendous customer support so switched to Virgin instead.

    • No probs with Kogan.
So no need to contact CS.
But when you do they are fairly good

  • I'm on an old Virgin SIM only plan that's out of contract ($45 a month for 18GB). Optus offered me $30 a month for 15GB on a 12 month contract. Last night I just signed up for Spintel $26 a month for 10GB month to month plan. Use promo code mobile_act to waive $10 SIM activation fee.

My wife is also on the same old Virgin plan as me that's coming out of contract later this month. Optus has offered her the same plan as they offered me including waiving the contract break fee of $10. She will most likely go for it as she uses more data.

All of the plans mentioned in this post include/included unlimited calls/texts and $300 international calls per month.

    • Can you up date this post later to tell us how you go with Spintel.

    • -1

Why would you go with Spintel when Kogan is only $20.90 for 16GB on a 365 day plan prepaid so no hidden costs???

      • +1

Why would you commit $250+ in one hit and be stuck with Kogan for a year when I can keep my options open with Spintel?

  • So that 10gb for $25 special plan. Anyone know how long that special ad plan will stay before it disappears?

  • I assume that worst case the offers will stand for the lifetime of your Virgin contract and if anything are are likely to get better when/if your contract expires.
Optus are trying to retain Virgin customers with these offers and if you're out of contract, you are harder to retain and therefore should get a better offer!

The only question remaining… Is it worth jumping on this early for World Cup?

  • I asked the rep from online chat this morning, and can confirmed after the contract we still can keep the same price and data.
This is also the same deal when I ported to Virgin, lifetime contract.

  • +2

I'm on $32 Month to Month with 15GB of data. $30 for 15GB for a 12 month contract isn't worth it. I just had a chat with the optus live chat and they're not interested (and a bit rude).
I don't really know what else to do. I wish Virgin was staying. Their customer service is amazing!

    • I hope you get a phone with that

      • SIM only. Care to show me a better deal?

  • +1

In the 15th month of a 24 month contract, sigh.

    • wait 3 months ?

this is not time limited offer

  • +1

Thanks OP. They waived $292 off the handset and now I am on $30/m 15G sim plan only.
    Awesome!!!!

    • Tempted to upgrade to a Virgin Handset deal and then switch!

Their XPERIA XA Premium deal is decent.

    • +2

Don't forget the bonus awful customer service you're now going to receive!

    • are you on 18th month ?

      • 5 months to go, should be on 19th month

    • Phone, in-store, chat or just online using the website?

      • Just online through the link

  • If I am on a no-lock-in-contract with virgin, can I still get this deal? I recently signed up to it too

  • does optus allow free iphone tethering without fee ?

  • Currently on a $20 5Gb month-month plan, but cheapest Optus plan they’ve offered me is $25, and I don’t need the extra 5Gb it comes with.

    • Go to Kogan.
Now around $152 for 365 days for 3GB data per 30 days and the usual unlimited bundle.
      Otherwise $205 for 365 days for 7GB. ($16.90/mth)
      Better coverage than Optus too.

  • -1

And for only $20.90 per month you get a MUCH GREATER 16GB to use any way you like with Kogan.
    Alternatively only $16.90 for 7GB
And these inlude UNLIMITED calls, SMS and MMS.

    • +2

Why are you pushing kogan so hard? You have made at least 5 comments in this thread just telling people to swap to kogan.

  • +3

Made an account just to let you guys know that the Optus student discount is applicable on the order (10% discount with valid edu e-mail)!! Signed up on the 10GB plan for $22.50

    • +1

How? I don’t see anywhere to put in any codes and it doesn’t change the price when I try to use my edu email.

    • next level!

@purplefood did you do it over the phone? can you let me know how so I can add it to the deal discription.

      • +2

Yup did it over the phone!

I originally signed up using my personal e-mail but when I called up to verify my order, I inquired about the student discount. Got the code from my edu e-mail and she took it over the phone. No hassle and they were extremely cool about it.

        • i just called up now and asked for the $25 plan and if they could add the student 10% promo discount code they said no they can not do that for this special plan. I might try again once I received the optus sim and call up to activate it ill ask again if they can accept the code. note also he said that another credit check had to be done I had to give my permission and id to do the credit check .

    • I don't see an option when I press [Buy Now] for any discount code. How did you do it? :)

      • +1

        Hi SpinningPlates,

Give them a call and have the student code ready! They will do it over the phone :)

I kind of just asked randomly not expecting the discount to go through, but it was totally fine.

        • Ah I see, thanks! Enjoy :)

        • +1

tried chat they are rude and wont do it. might call up and cancel order and just go with jeenee 10% already off is better.

      • +1

latest update: followed up with live chat, they said they can apply the student discount but only after the SIM has been activated…

        • I just tried online chat and they said it could only be applied to the normal optus plan :/

        • +1

update again: sim was activated, and they were able to apply the student discount. Thanks for mentioning this!

$22.50 per month for 10 GB. very good deal.

    • the student discount no longer works - enquired both by text chat and by phone. the good news is that the $25 plan, which didn't show up in my offer page, was available for me to sign up both by text chat and by phone.

both said no further promos/discounts may be applied to these plans (asked for both $25 and $30).

Just ported over to optus now. might give them another call to "follow up" on the status to check if the student discount can be applied.

      • I did it online via customer serivce. Just give your reference number and the discount.etc and it should be fine.

        • which plan did you sign up to?

  • So just to clarify, if I have - months left of a 24month iPhone plan, do I pay any fees at all if I just switch to one of these Optus plans? When I use that Optus site it says I can do the $30 15gb option but don't know if virgin will sting me with some money owing or not.

  • uh oh…e-mail from Optus saying "we need to talk to you about your order"

    • what did miggs say to you Clarice?

  • Question: do I need to wait til the end of my billing cycle (13 days) in order to port, or will I be refunded pro rata for what I have already paid (virgin charge in advance from memory).

  • When I type in my number into the Optus page it says "It appears your phone is still in contract, so you can continue to use it as normal. However, if you'd like to make the move to Optus now, we've put together some plans that we think you'll love. Note that if you do choose to transfer to us, cancellation fees will apply."
How do I know what fees will apply if I go with a new SIM only plan? I started my 2 he contract in Jan 2017. Cheers

  • +2

I did not have this deal when i entered my details on the link (the lowest was the 30 dollar sim only plan) . I called up and stated i wanted the 25 dollar plan and they gave it to me with student discount. Thanks OP

  • does this works on stacking another $10 bux off bundle to existing optus account ?

  • anyone knows what happens to my lifetime 10% off velocity deal, and whether optus plans will continue offer velocity points?

  • No one seems to have mentioned the huge fee hike for prepaid users. Now $19 for 90 days on the Virgin mobile simple plan. But with Optus a minimum of only $25 per month.

    This is Ozbargain, isn't it?

  • Got an email from Optus 1:27 this morning to confirm my email address and to set up myaccount.

Has anyone checked Optus myaccount/myprofile/mycontracts the details on the contract?

I only picked a $30 SIM ONLY plan and nothing else. Somehow, I've found they put Optus Sport under Optional Extras for $14.99/month. Called them 8am sharp and managed to talk to them 30mins later. The lady advised that was an error and had already been escalated.

But, just in case, I noted down the call reference and details for future reference.

  • I think you need to chat to Billing & General Support not sales only after your number is activated to apply student discount?

  • Is their a end date for this deal?

  • Is the National Geographic app free on the $25 p/m plan?

Can the National Geographic service be accessed directly in browser?

  • I have confirmed with Virgin that they will waive all early termination fees if you have 6 months or less on your phone plan and switch to Optus:

I checked your account and your contract will end on x so you still have x months remaining on the contract. What Optus is offering is waiver of 6 months. Near the end of your commitment or if you reached 6 months, we'll send you an Optus offer so you can make the move.

  • I got told they’d waive the fees. Got a bill for $178

    • A verbal offer is considered as good as a contract. They need to follow through on was discussed. 10 years in HR
