Received this deal from Lenovo yesterday. For $1075 you get a ThinkPad E480 with:

  • Intel Core i7-8550U Processor
  • Windows 10 Home 64
  • 14.0" FHD IPS Display
  • 8GB DDR4 Memory
  • AMD Radeon RX 550 2GB Graphics
  • 256GB M.2 Solid State Drive

Coupon code HOTE480 — probably because of Lenovo finally realising how hot and crippling an i7 & RX 550 are running inside the E480 chase :P Customisable build as always (with potentially longer shipment), so you can get more memory, backlit keyboard, fingerprint reader, etc. Offer ends on Monday.

On the other hand, this SILVER E480 might be a better buy at $799 delivered.

  • Intel Core i5-8250U Processor
  • Windows 10 Home 64
  • 14.0" FHD IPS Display
  • 8GB DDR4 Memory
  • 128GB M.2 Solid State Drive

Yeah, same spec as this previous deal except $30 less. And in silver, which some might prefer but a blasphemy of ThinkPad IMHO. The almost $280 saved from downgrading to i5 and without a dGPU can get you some nice 2.5" SSD with cash to spare. Offer ends Thursday 7 June.

  • is this a good deaL? Sounds good for something this small with a dedicated graphics card..

    • +2

      too heavy. no good :(

    • At this price point, there is nothing in comparison/competition .

But the graphics card can only handle light /medium games.

      • Actually there's a few others that could compete. If you need the dGPU then the Acer Swift 3 from Amazon is comparable, though better build quality (metal body), better thermals, no throttling and a fingerprint scanner and backlit keyboard.

    • +7

Graphics card isn't much better than onboard graphics. A new bios update drastically reduced performance due to overheating problem. And i7 is not much better than i5. So it's better to get the base model (so long as it is FHD IPS). But if you want graphics, then get a different model altogether.

    • +1

It has good specifications for the price, but the quality is not better than what you are paying for.

    • depends if you need small and if you are after a desktop but don’t have the space.
and are settling for a laptop.

the 580 series has space for an extra internal drive eg 2 tb or 3 tb and also a bigger screen.

depends what you want to do with it.

inner city living apartments and townhouses are getting smaller and few have a 2nd bedroom to use as a study for a desktop … so it’s a multipurpose kitchen / dinning / desk table.

  • What is the best similar laptop with better screen possibly 2 in 1?

  • +1

I got in on this during last months deal as similar price. I have it now and its a fantastic laptop for the price. I dont game, but do photoshop+lightroom and a little bit of Premiere and it seems to be just as fast or faster as my couple years old i7/32gb+R290
Screen is good, bright and clear, but the colour gammit is not super, but good enough for an amateur.

    • Does it look bulky and ugly? Will people at the cafe think it's old or something? I had a E560 that was ghastly and just felt bad to handle and look at. Also, what's the battery life like with wifi? TIA.

      • +4

why do you care what people at cafe think?

Do you go around asking them, what do you think of my laptop?

if you care so much, go get a macbook.

Beauty and style and image are part of the fun of life.

Some great cafes care about image.

Waitresses might have sex with me if they like my laptop, and if they have my babies, then my great genes will spread across the world.

Publishers might think I'm classier if I have a nice laptop.

It annoys emo's who claim to not care about how they look.

I'm a Libra and have a stronger appreciation for beauty, so it helps me feel positive about life.

Attractive tools inspire me want to work more.

Macbooks have horrible keyboards and no connectivity, and they are way over-priced.

        • @worldwidehappiness: mate, you are delusional. No waitress will have sex with you due to your choice in laptop.

        • @Michael15286: Thanks for your insight. Maybe it's a reverse psychology thing. If you get the ugliest laptop you can find, waitresses will think you're a good looking rebel who plays by his own rules. Maybe laptop companies should compete to see who can make the ugliest laptop.

Oh! its gorgeous!…. Back, Boxy and very 00's. It perfectly matches running Debian on it**

As for size, take an A4 peice of paper and add about 1cm to each of the sides, thats about how big it is. Also it sits about 1cm from the table to it height.

I get about 6 hours battery life - your mileage may vary.

One of the biggest selling points is that its very upgradeable and even the batter it replaceable. 2 ram slots, 2 hdd slots, cards and battery is all user serviceable. I will put in a 1gb SSD when I need to and also probably upgrade the RAM to 16 or 32gb when I need too.

For the sale price, Ive not seen anything Id recommend more.

Oh,the keyboard it fantastic + dedicated pgup, pgdown keys, the ability to function lock the function keys

**Im the last person that you should ask about fashion.

  • Just out of curiosity, can I still buy a laptop that comes with Win 7?

  • -1

what is win7 ….. that has gone the way of cpm80 ….ah the days when the apple ll+ and the 6502 cpu was figting it out against intel and the 8080 … intel won.

there are no win7 supported drivers for 8th gen CPUs …..so you will be buying second hand laptop if you want to run win 7 with supported drivers.

  • +1

Ah, 128GB… If the $799 i5 spec includes a 256GB SSD, it'd be a killer deal (still okay deal with current spec)

    • RAM, HDD (2 slots) and Battery are user serviceable/replaceable. search youtube for example.
Upgrade or add another SSD/M2 when/if you need later?

  • is this any good for gaming?

    • no. very bad for gaming.

    • Ignore the other guy, depends what your doing. If your after light/casual gaming (i.e Minecraft, Overwatch, Borderlands, stuff that's relatively light) it'll do fine. If your trying to run the latest AAA titles at 60+ fps then definitely not. Just search for the laptop and gaming on YouTube and you'll see how it performs. Just remember that the dGPU is heavily throttled in Bios update 1.13/4.

  • Does anyone know how long would it take for the delivery to Melbourne.

    I’m flying on 08/06/2018

    • +3

I got mine in 7 weeks.

That is after weeks of calling them to hurry up.

    • +1

I ordered one on the 8th May, I got a shipping dispatch notice on the 16th May, Shipped on 18th, I got it on the 21st.

This was customised with a Backlight keyboard and finger print scanner, which might explain why it took to long before sending it out, not sure.

    • Got mine in about 9 days. My guess is they finish the sale, place an order from China for the number required, then ship them through Australia from the local warehouse.

    • One of the $899 ones says ships in 2 days, so they must have a bunch ready to go. But 2 days is when it leaves the factory. Allow at least another 7 business days after that. And allow for the possibility that the driver might card and run:

"You’ll receive your delivery approximately 5-7 business days after your order has shipped. Deliveries to regional areas, as well as to WA, NT and Tasmania may take longer."

  • anything below $500. need it for UNI. only needs to run Office and youtube :)

    • Have you looked at a Chromebook?

      • most educational institutions give you Office free or discounted so chromebook wouldn’t do the trick, need windows or mac.

  • Don't forget, 4.5% Cashrewards

  • My wireless card doesn't work properly. Slows down to about 2mbps, via speed test, until I reboot.

Anyone else seen this? Router is Netgear R7000

  • Any deals coming up on the T460s? Those seemed very popular last year, but haven't seen them pop up in sales this year so far.

    • T460s is the model 2 generations ago. Maybe eBay?

    • Yeah, you can pick them up second hand from gumtree, I sold one last year for $550.

  • It's a thinkpad, however, E range is the low budget range. T and X are better in build quality and professional use. - just my opinion.

  • How does it compare to the Asus F510UA?

  • how long does it usually take for lenovo to ship out? it's been 2 weeks and haven't received any updates since then

    • Its been over 3 weeks and multiple shipping delays for me (every time the shipping day is reached). Over their amount of business days before shipping. This is for no customising either. Would not purchase from Lenovo again. Will probably cancel my order.
