Yoh, seems a great price. Maybe time to upgrade from my v20.

    • Could be a good time - the V30 prices have held up well compared to how quickly the V20 dropped in price, plus we’ll be paying GST for all imported goods from next month. Have you been happy with your V20?

      • +5

Yeah absolutely love it. Not sure if I want to give up the removable battery, ir blaster, second screen just yet.

        • +5

i’ve got the v20, great phone and runs flawless , only downside is it’s not android one.

great coverage in rural areas with band 28 over the christmas holidays.

        • @garage sale:
Yeah, I wouldn't upgrade if I had the LG V20.

I would probably wait until 2019 so that new phones will come much faster (7nm Cortex A76), some camera improvements, some battery life improvements to go along with IP68 waterproofing. That V20 is still a beast today and the removable battery is a great feature to tide you over for the years.

        • V20 owner and I feel the same about all the points you mentioned. Only thing I'm starting to dislike about my V20 is battery life, some complained about theirs straight out of the box but mine was always pretty strong. Fast forward 13 months and it's starting to tank. Nothing a replacement battery couldn't fix though I'm eyeing the V30+ after this sudden price drop. $500's is my entry point so it's not quite there yet.

        • +1

@Click_It: why not save some money and buy a replacement battery to tie you over for now. I have been alternating two batteries so the wear on both should be lesser.

        • @xoom: I think I'll have to. This morning using it for about an hour browsing the news it dropped to 62%.

What I didn't include in the previous post is that I use a Xiaomi 20 000mah power bank a lot so that's how I get around it, but a 2nd battery would really make sense now.

Bit scared about the non-removable in the V30+…

        • @Click_It: same. I really like my next phone to have a removable battery also.

        • @garage sale:

I bought a V20 from them and has issue. The Screen is flickering. You need to cover the shipping cost if you claim warranty. Also if there is no fault, they can charge whatever they want.

        • +1

@leoorange3107: Don't forget that you can claim shipping costs up to $45 if you paid with PayPal.

    • Sure. V20 is no doubt a good phone but the cameras are not so 2018. This one on another hand over sharpen the photos but is a great overall update from V20. Good luck and don't forget to buy that 9 bucks impedance adopter to activate QUADDAC even on cheaper low impedance headphone

      • what are those 9 bucks impedance adopter? got any links?

        • HIFI ADOPTER It will trigger that QUADDAC on your phone.

        • @twoperspectives: The Quad DAC is always active as long as you've enabled it in the drop down menu or in the phone settings.

No, the rumour that 3 of the 4 DACs are shut down with low impedance headphones is false. I think it stemmed from a misinformed poster on reddit who assumed "low quality" means "low impedance".

The adaptor can trigger high impedance mode, but that will not increase audio quality. It'll send more power to the earphones, which will then be wasted in the resistor in the adaptor. You might as well just turn the volume up.

The point of the adaptor, which is just a resistor, is to lower the noise floor, namely background hiss that's always there in some devices, even if it's not playing anything.

Adding a resistor inline will lower the level of everything - both your music as well as the soft background hiss which will then hopefully be low enough to be imperceptible during quiet passages or silence.

The V20's noise floor is already quiet - the adaptor won't do much.

  • Great price. Would have jumped in if it was the Moroccan Blue version. Root/unlock is now available for this phone too.

    • +7

I also grabbed the AU model as soon as I read the xda "wtf" v30 thread for unlocking the bootloader on these.
I'm running the HK Oreo firmware, the handset is very compact and light for such a large screen, and the screen to me does not seem to produce headaches so far. Its pwm effect omly seems troubling to me below 30% brightness.

      Positives to me:
Screen benign pwm (for me) above 30%
      LineageOS available (unofficial so far)
Unlockable bootloader negates the lack of Treble support
      DAC and headphone jack
      Always on display with amoled
      Beautiful design
Camera combination wide and regular is handy
      IP68 water resistance
      Wireless charging
      Quick Charge
      SD card support
      No notch

      • for me nfc, band 28 and treble for android one are essentials in my next phones as now we just do ota in the household.

you are the first person that has mentioned treble support …and if you have treble, often overlooked as it’s fine print in android one roadmap.

quite a few phones are android one oreo but don’t support treble so will have limited lifespan for updates compared to the ones that do.

      • The one thing I didn't like, is using the DAC uses more battery….

Also not part of android one, doesn't have P beta etc.

      • +1

        IP68 water resistance

How is this possible with a headphone jack?

        • +5

The same way it's possible with a USB socket. The socket itself is sealed on the inside.

        • +2

          Ask Samsung.

    • Is it available on the H930DS? XDA is a bit unclear but it doesn't seem to be. I bought the H870DS LG G6 and it's never been unlockable.

      • Yes it can be unlocked using the xda "wtf" technique. Posting this from a rooted au v30+ H930DS running the HK Oreo rom…

  • +16

Slightly cheaper from eGlobal eBay (they're the same business) with the code PAMPER20

    • +5

Nice pick up. It looks like EGlobal dropped the prices on the black and grey models late yesterday afternoon, well after the sale started. Reverse price jacking!

      • +2

        price jilling

      • +2

        Reverse price jacking!

Unfortunately nobody will remember that they did that, or they'll just ignore it. Then when the next eBay sale comes, a whole bunch of people will keep saying price jackers, these sales are useless because everyone prices jacks everything, etc etc.

        Confirmation bias is rife, unfortunately!

    • $644.80 now attempting

  • +3

This is my current phone, it's sensational.

    • Can you tell us what you like about it? :)

      • +38

It has an internet browser and also a calculator function.

        • +1

You can make phone calls with it.

        • +4

          @xoom: You can?

        • @potplanty: it's the latest craze. Making phone calls on mobile phone. Who would have thought it's doable?

    • In your personal opinion, how does the screen compare to a Samsung flagship?
      (Note4, S7, S9, iPhone X etc)

      • I have used this phone for quite a while and the screen in it is beautiful, being an amoloed screen. I have compared it to a S9 screen and it certainly holds up really well in comparison, not on par because Samsung seem to have nailed having the nicest smartphone screens, but definitely can sit in the same ball park as it.

  • oof, great price… so close to pulling the trigger

  • +3

    Still love my V20…

    • +1

Typing this comment on a v20. Owned past 12 months already. Still going strong.

    • +2

Wait until the ghosting hits (if you're unlucky like me).

      • Mine hit only a few months after purchasing :/ but I can deal with it, the rest of the phone is so damn good.

        • Mine hit just before the 6 month mark. Was absolutely shit and made the phone unbearable to use.

      • mine has past its 12mths life and all still as brand new…

  • Can anyone confirm if this is a hybrid Sim slot (with micro SD support) or are there dedicated slots for 2nd sim and memory card.

  • +3

FYI - 8.0 Oreo update is available on this model, however its not without flaws - Some are experiencing Bluetooth dropouts, software crashes etc are far more prevalent than they were on Nougat. Some people have had success with a wipe of everything, but some claim issues have come back over time.

Because the phone hasn't been a huge seller its not plastered everywhere, but xda dev, and Reddit have more info for the diligent buyer. At this price its a good deal, can confirm I am approaching 6 Months of ownership on this model, no boot loops thus far, no screen burn and really only some minor Bluetooth hiccups…until I did a clean wipe.

  • I just sold mine, Australian stock, 6 months old for this price.

    • why did you sell it?

      • +2

        Upgraded to Oneplus 6 lol.

        • where you get that?

it is not Android one yea? still using oxygenos?

  • -5

Wake me up when this it under $450 Lol.

    • +1

You'll be sleeping for a while yet

      • 6 to 12 months Max.

I always wait until the handset "streets" at around the 50% of the launch price before buying. Typically 18 months from release, if my past experience is anything to go by.

        • Yeah cause android handsets drop like flies

    • That's what I paid for my V20. I'll be all over this if it hits that price.

  • Still only 4GB RAM though? Is this not LGs flag ship phone?

    • +2

4gm ram ….on a pc runs windows 10 and office 365 and doesn’t even go to swap ….android is smaller than windows 10 and mobile apps are much smaller than windows apps so 4 gb is a lot ….

what are you loading that would use use 4 gb ?

      • Uhm, physically a smartphone is much smaller than a PC but not in logical anymore.
A flagship smartphone is usually equipped with a Full HD/2K+ resolution screen.
That means the HW must render the same number of pixels in real time for Web/apps/Game/Home screen….

So if compare with a normal Windows Laptop, it can say that 4GB Ram is quite normal.

        • That's not how display works with ram and phone applications are typically much smaller than PC so they do not require as much ram.

        • @Diji1:
Yeah I know that PC apps are heavier than phone apps, so that 4GB is normal in Android while 8GB is normal in Windows PC nowadays.

          • uhm as i knew, the main memory are shared between the CPU and GPU(Adreno), that means when you run some graphic 'hungry' apps, such as games, then the GPU will get more RAM for rendering. In that case, the bigger the resolution is the more memory is required. Of course, how many GBs are enough is unknown and depend on -> Apps/optimisation/resolution…etc

p.s: commented on a 16GB laptop, which consumed ~6GB RAM for 12 Chrome windows and several small apps + normal background service// and still use a 3GB Sony XZ (since it is enough for me now lol)

      • Most phones at this price point are 6GB. I typically use RAM and processor specs combined to work out how 'future proof' a phone is (i.e. how likely it is to slow down after a few years of use).

    • It is, but I think its their flagship phone from August 2017, not this year: https://www.gsmarena.com/lg_v30-8712.php#h930ds

    • Same as the Google Pixel 2XL - Google's flagship phone?

  • +1

Damn, if my V20 wasn't still so damn fantastic I'd be jumping at this deal… but I love my second screen and removable batteries too much

    • The always-on OLED negates the second display quite well (V20 and V30+ owner). The batteries and dedicated SD card slot were a nice touch though.

    • i too like my v20, takes great photos esp when in manual mode… but have never really worked out that scratch pad triggered by 2nd screen - what's that about? battery life could be better though

  • +1

I was hanging out for a price drop on the v30 for ages. So long in fact that I got sick of waiting and bought an s9+. Would have jumped at this price 3 months ago.

  • -6

    Insert generic bootloop comment here

  • +1

Ooh tempting. Looks like this one doesn't come with the B&O buds though, and obv no aus warranty. I'm really hoping JB will drop their price soon…

  • I would have been tempted if it is not from DWI - had very poor warranty repair with my 1+3 phone. Took a long time to a point I had to get a new phone plus the replacement refurbished phone had a defect they refused to acknowledge. So I am sticking to local AU warranty phone these days.

  • I'm currently torn between this phone and the huawei mate 10 (not pro). Both phones are sitting at almost exactly the same price now (grey import)

I used to have the v20 and love the dual sim PLUS sd card, removable battery and wide angle lens, but i hear the mate 10 is the king when it comes to battery.

any one with first hand experience able to provide some feedback?

    • Mate 10 is definitely not king when it comes to battery life - the Kirin 970 seems to be pretty inefficient. Huawei threw a huge battery in the 10, but it hasn’t resulted in great battery life. One thing the V30 is praised for is battery life. Here, check this battery drain test out.

      • +1

Seconding the v30, the battery life is great. I was making the same decision between the mate 10 and the v30, and have to say glad I went for the v30. To think that I was concerned about some of the reviews on camera and screen, both are excellent

  • I have a lg v20 but looking for alternatives/upgrade after owning it for almost 2 years.

I am looking for a dual sim , wide angle selfie lens and preferably unbreakable phone, perhaps better low light photography like/better than lg v20…

    Any recommendations?

  • Does this come with a receipt for claiming TFS at the airport? I'm going overseas next month.

    • +2

Dwi sells grey import stock. So no gst paid. Therefore no TRS.

  • +1

    This or the G6 H870DS ~$499.2 + 6.8 shipping (AU stock)
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Au-Stock-LG-G6-H870DS-Dual-Sim-4…

Both have Quad DAC, I don't care too much about the screen size, but I prefer the IPS screen over the OLED
And the more important, I really worry about sudden dead/boot loop/ or what ever with LG phone (so it seems the AU stock may better the Grey)

    • +2

I've had a G6 for over 9 months and have not experienced any issue with it. Oreo is rolling out for the G6, just not for HK market H870DS yet. It should arrive by the end of June. Not sure if it applies to all country variants, but the G6 is now (with Oreo) an Android Enterprise device, meaning it will get security updates within 90 days.

In regards to the bootloop issues, that primarily affected devices with the Snapdragon 808 and 810 SoCs. LG could have managed heat dissipation better, but it seems Qualcomm is mostly to blame. There are some very, very rare reports of the G5 (820 SoC) having a similar issue, but there really isn't any consensus.

      • Does the Android Enterprise device apply only to USA variant? Both G6 and V30/V30+ are on the list…

    • +1

Just be warned you cant unlock this model, so no root and custom roms. Not a big deal for all but it does annoy me that I have to have evernote permanently installed on my phone.

      • I unlocked mine

        • H870DS G6? Do you have a link to how?

        • @Clemfandango:
          Sorry - I unlocked my v30, I didn't pick up on the indentation and haven't unlocked a G6

  • How does this stack up against the P20 Pro? Price is quite different, cameras I assume are better on the P20 and 4000mah vs 3300 mah. Does the price difference justify the shortcomings?

  • Can someone advise about the front and back camera on this? Any good compare to S9?

    • Back cameras are good, front camera is average

  • Is it worth waiting for the v40. Apparently it will be out later in the year?

  • so whats the downsides to getting a non-australian model ?

is it a big deal ??

    • No local manufacturers warranty. Retailers offer warranties but I think it can be a headache to claim. I haver never had an issue with mine so don't know.

The charger will have the wrong plug as well.

  • $571 if combined with this offer! https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/383058

    • 571 USD or AUD?

      • AUD, but it’s over now.

    • Probably worth posting, that’s a great price.

    • I am so close to pulling the trigger on one of these but I know that the price of LGs drop very quickly. But then there is the 10% Gst on overseas goods that will come into effect on 1 July. Aah!! Decisions…. decisions….
