https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tools.buck…

A repost of the previous deal but now with a slightly better price as part of a 18.6 sale.

This is a mid range, dual SIM handset with better than midrange features such as 87.5% screen/body ratio (5.5 inch display in a body that would previously had a 5 inch display), power efficient Snapdragon SD630, NFC, Nice bright IGZO display, F1.75 camera and very good battery life. 140g and the small size make it easy to use one handed.

As a bonus you get Android Nougat 7.1.1 (and can update to Android 8.0 Oreo (third tab)) microSD support, Band 5 and Band 28 LTE support!

Downsides are that it has "the notch", Smile UX is not the best launcher, the 630 models have a plastic back, it is shipped with Chinese firmware, you need to install Taiwan firmware for Google Services, which seems straightforward and is explained on the Joybuy page.

Protective case? Phone ships with one. Here's some alternatives
Shockproof cases:

Or as from whirlpool:

I ordered this cheap case (grey) which is suprisingly a perfect tight fit, accurate cutouts for buttons, mic holes etc, as well as having a frosted surface (fingerprint resistant) on the back, smooth (more grippy) around the sides. The downsides – there is a very faint moulding seam where the frosted joins the smooth surface around the perimter, the frosting seems to get smoothed/polished over time, maybe another colour would have been a better match with the blue. IMO it is lighter and much better in the hand than the included hard case, and around $2.

Q: When if ever is the black model likely to go on sale?

-Black and white are sold out. Blue is the only color with remaining stock.

Can get black or white for US$190 from geekbuying. Instead of paying more suggest install a black grippy case and all you'll see is the blue outline around the camera & ports.

Q: Can the battery be replaced? Yes, follow this youtube vid to fit one of these:

        • For me, this phone is worth a wait.. :)

      • Have you checked the tracking on the website ?

The number also works on the auspost website

    • Shipping times are actually pretty good. I ordered on 1st June and tracking shows that its arrived in Sydney today

Should reach in the next 2 days (Adelaide)

      • +1. Ordered 1st June arrived in Syd Jun-17, now awaiting Auspost delivery. So under 3 weeks.

        • Funny you mention that, looks like mine has arrived in Sydney too. Strangely, not reflected on JoyBuy order tracking.

      • Same here. Ordered 1st June, arrived in Australia yesterday and is currently sitting up in Granville. Delivery by the end of the week, I reckon.

      • Ordered on 3/6, received it today 19/6. It was left at my door with a ring on the bell. No signature was required. So look out for your phone at your door daily.

  • If you live in the Eastern part of Australia then it should be fairly quick. Just 26th of May then got mine 2.5 weeks ago to Perth. I noticed the phone arrived from Western Sydney first.

  • Gotta be the cheapest notch phone ever. No headphone Jack and battery is barely passable but has SD card slot. Pretty good deal!

  • Can someone please comment here…

How is the Camera and Battery life compared with Redmi Note 5 Global?

Sharp Aquos S2 vs Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 -> turn on CC and auto-translate Russian->English

      • -1

        what is auto-translate Russian->English?

    • The rear camera hardware is better than the Redmi Note 5 AI (f1.8 vs f1.9) but the Redmi might have better focusing using dual pixel detection. The S2 front camera may be lower in MP but it a bigger sensor compared to the Redmi. The S2 takes great photos with gcam mod

    • +3

Sounds like you're making the same choice as me. After reading everything I can find, I've more or less decided that the RN5 will have somewhat better battery life but not by a dealbreaking amount. My comparison resolves to this:

      Redmi N5G

      Bigger screen
      IR blaster
      Marginally better battery life
      Best chance of official LineageOS

      Aquos S2

      B28
      NFC
      Better screen (IGZO)
      Better camera (dual,DIS)
      Front fingerprint
      Faster charging (QC3)
      Supplied AC adapter quick charges
      Oreo available (inc. Treble)

No brainer really, Sharp all the way.

That said, I have a RN5P in my hand right now (won it in an OZB competition) and it's a great phone. Fast, pin sharp screen, >1 day battery.

Can't go wrong with either of them imho.

One thing I do wonder - fingerprint scanning. The (rear) RN5P scanner is lightening quick and accurate, but I prefer a front scanner. Anyone know if the Sharps is as good?

  • Does 'non-removeable' battery mean not replaceable at all? Every smartphone I've ever had needed a battery replaced at some point - some were tricky but doable.

    • +1

If technically inclined, the battery is replaceable as shown at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSnMyGBhvcs

      • Yes found that video. The use of the heat gun puts me off a bit, though I have replaced a battery in a Nexus 5 and Redmi 4X. If that is 'normal' nowadays then not a big deal.

    • +1

Non removable just means you can't pop the back cover off and take out the battery. All phones are like this now, with vary rare exceptions (I think LG v20 has a removable battery). "Non-removable" Batteries can be serviced though as normal.

    • good luck ever finding a replacement battery for this when the time actually does come to replace it. they are cheap phones, to be used for a period and then discarded. :)

Hey guys im a bit of a noob with these things but rooting is the same thing as jailbreaking for apple phones right? If thats the case, are the instructions on the website telling you how to root the device?

    • +6

The info on the Joybuy website is incorrect. The Aquos S2 does not require root. You do have to flash a different firmware to get Google Play Store though.

It's pretty straightforward, here are the instructions

      • oh cool so is that just updating the firmware or something

  • I haven't received my order yet and I placed mine back on June 1. For those of who placed it on June 1 as well, how were you able to track your phone arriving in Sydney? On my Joybuy account, 7th June was the last trackig date despatched out of Shenzhen.

    • Track your parcel on Auspost using same tracking code

  • how'd you get 193 aud, i applied the code and after paypal currency conversion it still ends up to be 200

    • +1

Don't let PayPal convert the price from USD to AUD; use your fee free credit card to do the conversion.

PayPal are making that $7 difference as profit on the exchange rate.

      • So when you go through to paypal you select the option as let my card provider decide on the exchange rates?

        • +1

          Correct!

        • @Master Bates: do you mind me asking what fee free cc you're using. im looking into getting a card but theres so many different types to choose from lol

        • thanks mate!

Probably a dumb question, but I'm not all that familiar with 'rooting a device'. On the linked page under notes it states 'CN VERSION NEED ROOT' Now I saw elsewhere that the device needs Tawian firmware update for some google capability - is that rooting? Is it a big deal?

    • +2

  • i really want this phone but no headphone jack? i am so undecided now.

    • +1

It comes with a USB-C to 3.5mm headphone jack in the box. So you do get a headphone jack via an adapter.

      • so its not gonna be a hassle to listen to music with wired headphones?

        • Very late reply.. but..

You can't say it's not a hassle compared to a phone with it built-in, but is it enough of a hassle to deter you? Wasn't for me because I intended for this to be my spare phone. Tempted to make it my main phone though..

  • +1

Thanks OP. I missed all previous deals on Aquos S2 at JD, but this time finally bought one.

  • Thanks OP, bought blue one

    • +1

Yes, you can have any Aquos S2 color from joybuy as long as it's blue.

  • +1

a noob question, but how do i plug a 3.5mm earphone into the phone?

    edit: nevermind, found an adaptor

  • Just received the phone today. everything is great however have issues with GPS location detection on latest Android 8.0 firmware :( Any one esle?

    • +3

      Resolved with Factory Reset.

      • Nice one, when did you order yours? Mine has been sitting at Granville for last 2 days. This is the longest I have ever had to wait for a phone to arrive. :-(

        • Mine too. Granville appears to be collecting a stack of Aquos S2 phones.

        • ordered on the 8th June.

        • @Fatbo1: Lucky you! I ordered on 2nd June and still waiting…

  • Anyone can recommend a case and screen protector? Cheers

    • There's several cases in opening post. Phone has Gorilla glass so doesn't need a screen protector.

      • +2

Gorilla glass protects against scuffs and scratches, but it'll still shatter if you drop it face down.

        • Rubber stops on suggested case can absorb a face down drop. Comes with a screen protector too if you want extra protection.

  • +2

It's a great phone for the price. Be aware that SmileUX is extremly aggressive with app management, which gives this phone a pretty good battery life. Apps will not be allowed to run in the background (that means no notifications, alarms etc) unless you allow them to. To do that, you have to go into the settings -> S-boost -> Background app management and toggle the apps you want on.

  • +2

Just a note to those who wishes to flash android 8.0 oreo out of the box:

Before upgrading to the Android O version of the mobile phone system, please upgrade the mobile phone software to 00WW_1_35F and continue to upgrade to the Android O version of 00WW_2_080 .

    • +1

I can see how this could be Quite difficult to comprehend in the beginning!

The original Process of changing the file name of the OOWW_1_35F still applies! then after you have completed that step… factory reboot.

Because the Phone now recognises the Taiwanese Version there is no need to change the OOWW_2_080 file name! You just download it and insert it to the phone then follow the same steps of key pad code * # * # 874 # * # * etc etc and after it is installed you again factory reboot! Then it is all installed

      • I have completed the first step with renaming OOWW_1_35F and rebooting it. I try to do the exact same with the Oreo update (without renaming it), dragging it across and then dialing the number - however it just comes up "file not found". Any suggestions?

        • Go to settings - System update, click on the three dots, tap manual installation, then install

      • When trying to update to Oreo, it starts the installation and after 30% or so, it fails saying "Installation Problem". Any idea why this would be happening?

        • I would try downloading the file again, it could have been corrupted.

    • please upgrade the mobile phone software to 00WW_1_35F and continue to upgrade to the Android O version of 00WW_2_080 .

Assuming there's little reason not to upgrade to Oreo, I've upgraded to 00WW_1_35F no problems. Upgrading further to Oreo will (I think) cause me to lose settings and probably apps, so I have held off migrating to the new phone till I get Android 8 on it.

From the Sharp download page (translated),

      Update date: 2018/06/12
AQUOS S2 card brush differential upgrade package
      Original version number: 00WW_1_35F
      latest version number: 00WW_2_080

      or further down the page:

      Update date: 2018/06/05
AQUOS S2 high with card card differential upgrade package
      Original version number: 00WW_1_35F
      latest version number: 00WW_2_080

Do I select the first one with the newer date and never mind why there's a reference to "card card" vs "card brush"?

      Any advice appreciated.

      • from what i understand, the SS2-xxx file is for the 64gb version and SAT-xxx file is for 128gb

For anyone who interested, the Huawei Type-C earbud works fine with the Sharp S2. I just received it today and tested it briefly.

The following link is the one I bought but out of stock now.
    https://www.joybuy.com/product/Huawei-HUAWEI-Mate10-Pro-orig…

  • Received mine a few days ago and I'm extremely disappointed in the battery life. E.g. churned through 25% of battery life in 2 hours on the way to work this morning.

Screen size is also 5.5", but usable screen is considerably less

    • 2 hours of what?
      Listening to music, bad.
Screen on time, fair I'd say.

      • Screen on time, fair I'd say.

Wouldn't say it's fair for a brand new phone. I'd agree that that would tend to become the norm after a while though..

    • 25% in two hours SOT is quiet good. That's 8 hours of SOT per charged.

      • Actually when you put it that way…. that is true

However, that assumes you're literally using it for 8 hours straight which isn't realistic. Once you factor in standby time, maybe you'll get to.. 6 hours SOT? Which is still decent..

        • That was kinda my point. If the phone was just playing music (or worse, doing NOTHING) and it bled 25% of the battery in 2hrs, I'd be concerned.
But 2 hrs of SOT per 1/4 battery is pretty respectable I'd say.

Side note, getting frustrated with AusPost on this one. Phone has been sitting in Sydney since Friday night, no further tracking updates, let alone being delivered here to Bris. Have had a couple days off work so it would've been nice to get a new toy to play with while I had the spare time.

  • Anyone struggling to actually purchase one at the moment? Tried Chrome, Edge, Opera, Firefox - trying to open the cart it comes up with a text page and there endeth the story…

    • +1

Bought one today mate, no drama except for it being a major PITA to achieve the $5 coupon

  • How are people finding the front fingerprint feature? Is it fast and accurate?

  • No idea what I'm doing wrong. The price shows as $213AUD on the website but changes to $275.50AUD when I go to the cart? Anyone else getting this?

    • Is there an entry below that, representing the discount? My dad just successfully bought one for $207ish (with USD $5 coupon). In the cart it shows the full price, then shows a discount, then shows the actual price.

      • Nah I found the problem. I was actually trying to buy two of them, and I used the + button in the cart. I only noticed once I reduced it down to '1' that the discount returned.
Doesn't matter - free shipping so still bought two in two transactions.

Does this definitely have an IGZO display? Googling it doesn't offer a compelling case one way or t'other. GSMARENA says bog standard IPS LCD. For a company that bet the farm on IGZO, you'd expect any phone of theirs which uses it to heavily promote the fact.

Edit: GSMARENA says the S3 does but the S2 doesn't: https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=9138&idPhone2…

    • +2

To answer my own question, it does have an IGZO display. They refer to it as a "Free Form Display" (can be cut to any shape) in the specs, and that is built on IGZO.

Important, as IGZO is brighter, sharper ;-) and lower power than regular IPS LCDs. Hence the relatively puny battery.

      GSMARENA got it wrong.

      Specs:

      About (Sharp) Free Form Displays:
      https://www.sharpsma.com/free-form-display

Anyone coming from a regular IPS LCD screen care to comment on the S2's??

      • +1

I suspect the backlight is RGB rather than white led.
It seems to give me headaches, which I didn't expect.

        • +2

Sure you just didn't just start drinking more, because you were so happy with it?? That's what I choose to believe.

        • @NeBlackCat:
          LOL, not in this case.

If it weren't for the headache issue it was perfect for me.

It was so disappointing as it was something else other than flicker (I couldnt see any), but it must be due to something else to do with the display tech, which I dont know what it is (yet).

  • Has anyone switched from a Nexus 5x or OG Pixel and can give their experiences regarding the phone on 8.0 based on:

    -software experience and smoothness
    -battery life
    -camera quality and
    -screen quality?

I've got a Nexus 5x and was considering an OG Pixel given the current pricing of the 2 and likely price of the 3!

I've been burnt before with rubbish software, which is why I got the Nexus in the first place. However, I'm drawn to the smaller bezels and obviously it is a newer phone, although I'm not sure how the 821 (pixel) compares to the current 630 (sharp).

    Any feedback would be appreciated.

    • +2

I had a Nexus 5x some time ago, and my partner still has one, so I am familiar with both.
I dont know which camera is better, I was always impressed with the camera on the N5x but on paper the AS2 should be better - faster lens to compensate for less sensitive ASIC, dual camera for more accurate bokeh effect.

      AS2 superior features:
Smaller in all dimensions, is only 4g heavier, and has a 10% larger screen.
(Marginally)Faster processor, twice the RAM, at least twice the storage
      SDCard support
      Dual SIM support
Screen is brighter and probably as clear or clearer than the N5x, has curved edges rather than sharp edges.
Larger battery capacity, much longer battery life
Feels nicer in the hand than the N5x thanks to aluminium frame and curved plastic back, although personally I prefer the rear fingerprint scanner and front speaker on the 5x to the front scanner/downward speaker on the AS2, but apart from that, everything else is better on AS2

Software experience feels smoother and cleaner on 8.0 compared with 7.1.1 - especially in the custom ROM (curved edges applied, auto hide allowed on the soft keys)

      • Thanks for that comparison mate.

Which custom ROM are you using?

I completely agree with you re. speaker location. I hate bottom right edge speakers, because they're always blocked by the inside of my little finger when holding the phone. Anywhere else would be fine.

  • Thanks. Bought one. Good replacement for my Moto G3. Should arrive end of July :D

    But thats Ok, no rush.

  • +1

No matter what I do or the browser I use I get "Unable to get coupon, please try again later"

    • +1

I got that. I tried again later. It worked.

  • God damnit….
I am buying for just becoz of all the upvotes

  • Are the $5 codes all finished, keep getting an error, when I try? Is there a trick to get the code ?
    Price is still $155 USD

    • +1

Your currency needs to be set to USD to receive it iirc.

  • +1

It isn't expired! It's almost always available as stated. It is right now, for the next 3 days or so. It will be, bar the odd hour or two here and there, until there are non left IMHO.

  • Who is running this phone with an alternative (ie. non-Sharp) ROM, and how do you rate it?

  • A mate wants one of these now having seen the phone in action.

Will he now have to pay 10% import ripoff GST?

    Not sure of Joybuys policy

    • +1

yes, it lists it upon checkout.

  • +1

10% GST applies - if you visit the page it's clearly noted just below the pricing information.
Still showing US $155 for another 14 hours…

  • Hi - seeking feedback re: shaky video from the Sharp Aquos S2.

Saw this review on GSM Arena - says the lack of Optical Image Stabilisation delivers very shaky videos … please see the clip on this link:

    https://m.gsmarena.com/sharp_aquos_s2_handson-review-1700p5.…

Is this what people are experiencing with their Aquos S2's?

Does anyone have solutions for this issue?

It's really the main thing his holding me back from buying one.

Apparently Google Images has a video stabilisation feature. Would be keen to know how effective this is with fixing Aquos S2 video issues. Thanks.

    Welcome thoughts.

  • Just keep it in perspective- if you've come from a phone WITH image stabilisation, you'll be used to relying on optical or digital IS and will use the phone as such.
If you've not had IS before, I don't think you'll notice anything at all. The phone doesn't just "create" shake, you just have to hold steady… Same as any device in the past before IS started becoming common feature.
I don't video a lot while moving around running or walking or riding, so I don't have an issue. I'm usually stationary. YMMV.
