Also: "Mr Lew said the thousands of customers who had paid for the service would now have their $15 fee refunded."

@Hamza also free on Fifa WC app to stream because of the fail from Optus "Source Optus" I believe you can cast from it too.

They got greedy tried to change the app on day 2 to increase ad revenue and tried to blame it on numbers??? Extra people don't make the icons change and add in extra adds you have no issue watching,

SBS is full HD too so better all round they still haven't fixed it completely I wouldn't be surprised if SBS keep going with it all the way.

They have them on breach of contract already.

can't see optus coming back from this, especially refunding everyone. A win for football/soccer in Australia

The other post seemed to have a lot more detail but was deleted because it was posted second. Hmmm.

Can anyone confirm on the free access to Optus Sport subscription?

    • +1

385915 is still up and I think it's the better post because it mentions free access to Optus Sport. It's mentioned in http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-06-20/optus-hand-over-world-…

      • -4

Yep looks like it was undeleted now. Quite different posts, one about Optus Sport subscription the other about SBS coverage. Moderation in here starting to become like reddit (moderation for the sake of moderation).

        • Yep looks like it was undeleted now

Incorrect, node 385915 was never removed in the first place (as you say they are quite different posts). There was a third post (node 385916) which was removed as a duplicate.

Love the story - big idea meets piss poor execution. This will be my new real life example to employees :))

    • This will be their own real life example, when I asked them if they had been reading the news at all and how much of an issue it actually was they said no this surely isn't a news worthy story.

Maybe they just watch fox and friends too

  • -6

And where are all those people that said 4G would be better then Fibre to the Home?

    • +1

      Relevance???

      • -2

It seems the issue lies within the greater Optus mobile network infrastructure. Other sources of the same streams are not impacted and you could even log into them with the optus credentials.

        • -3

How is Optus mobile network relevant when I Chromecast via a Telstra cable internet home connection?

        • @Shonky:
I was careful not to say Optus mobiile network…..

    • Fibre to the home is much better than 4G. When you start talking about Fibre to the Node, then different story…

    • They're too busy voting against their own interests by electing Turnbull so he can make his 98 billion dollar NBN disaster which involves enriching Telstra.

      • Maybe you missed the news this week. Telstra certainly aren't enriched by the NBN at all. And if you think the are, there will be 9500 outgoing employees who don't agree with you.

  • is it available on SBS on TV or only on App?

I really hope SBS got a great deal for these games. I have fond memories of waking up early to see Les presenting the WC.

Optus sport has been good for EPL but ballsing up the WC this bad is pathetic

    • +5

      RIP Les

    • +2

Considering Optus reportedly paid $8 million to sub licence the WC rights and the fact that they’re going to end up showing many of the games which Optus were meant to have exclusive rights to - SBS has done very well financially

    • Oh wow just googled

      Les murray died last year

      Rip Les

Something was missing from the world cup coervarge

  • +2

Iran will crush Spain tonight !!

    • +10

Lol. Stick to rapping 50 Cent.

      • +1

        Gee, luv. Bit harsh there.

  • So what's happening after group stage?

    • Doesn't SBS have more games than anyway

    • +1

      The group of 16 :p

    • +11

Either you watch Optus streaming (for free now), or they cave in and let SBS broadcast it.

      Either way, it's free.

But I hope SBS do get to broadcast it. The quality of SBS HD is so much better than Optus streaming, it's kind of embarrassing.

      • Where is SBS HD available? On Foxtel I can inly see SBS in SD?

        • +4

Just plug a normal TV antenna into your TV!

Don't try watching broadcast TV stations on Foxtel. It's shockingly bad quality compared to what you get for free over the air.

It's broadcast in Full HD MPEG-4 at 50 fps. You should get signal pretty much anywhere. If you can't, just get a bigger antenna or a booster.

        • @marlor: thanks!

        • @marlor:for me we have some weird shit going on with the antenna and living on a busy road, fox is the only way sadly

        • @SirMurduck:

Have you tried a roof antenna with a powered booster? At one house I needed to do that. That house was seriously in the worst possible location, though (we were a long way from the transmission tower, there was a mountain between us and the tower, and we were surrounded by trees).

        • +1

          @SirMurduck:

https://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/how-to-watch-world-cup?cid=i… It says Tv, mobile app, website, on demand.

They showed the first game streamed on their site, hopefully they will do that with the other games, mobile app sucks.

        • @ENSLAVER:

Yep, website has the games streamed in HD.
the WC app (it's got a red icon) they did with optus also does full HD, and it's got chromecast and airplay.

The SBS OnDemand app doesn't though - it shows the games but not HD.

    • SBS will have matches from quarter finals to final but not round of 16.

      • That's not true, they get one match a day throughout the whole cup. They just haven't picked the round of 16 games yet.

    • SBS has always had 1 match per day (their pick).

So that will continue through the round of 16 (they'll get half of the games), quarters (half of them) semis (both), final

  • Come on at least have it until it finishes

  • Get it free anyway, in HD

  • All I can say to Optus: "Awwwwkkkwarrrddd"

    • +1

All I can say to Optus is "Karma's a bitch"…

    • +5

You can't see how something that people had to pay for (for lower quality) that is now free is a bargain?…

      • -1

free to air tv is not a bargain. it is free. subscribers are getting their money back so they haven't actually ended up having to pay for anything at all. just for your information, sbs will not have all the games. Still a bargain?

    • +1

I can't how turning on free to air tv is a bargain?

What if someone doesn't have a TV but now has access to this on their phone for free? Did you consider that?

Not sure why this is in the deals section and not in forum.

The deal isn't for being on free to air, it's that there is more access to more matches that otherwise you would have had to pay to watch, so how is that not a bargain?

      • -1

so you were happy not to pay for the world cup and miss half the games and now u can see some games but not all you see that as a bargain?

    • +2

Yes, you're such a hero, the lone neg in a sea of positivity that we can all now watch the WC.

      • -1

except you're incorrect. You cannot watch all of the world cup on sbs.

    • apt username.

  • +3

Apparently Optus said it was now fixed, but they "wanted to give Australians choice". Do they expect anyone to buy that?…

    • He think too much, we do have a Choice btw since 1959

  • +3

Love SBS… love free TV. This is things Australian needs to stand up for… if you look at other countries all are pay TV,s even third world countries like Indonesia most of them have to paid to watch World Cup although they made the subscriptions dirr cheap!!! but still it is not FREE

    Long Live Free TV

  • I have to add, I am with Optus prepaid and has a free Optus Sport the Live streamline is shocking and hang most of the time regardless using a wifi or Optus connection

    • Was not working first few days, but works perfectly HD stream on my Apple TV tonight. Can’t complain today with Optus. Especially after they credited me $30 and gave me fetch box free for 12 months

  • +1

I don’t know what I’m doing differently to everyone else but Optus has been flawless, both on fetch mini and watching replays on the phone app.

    • stream was down for a period of time

  • +2

Just watching Australia v Denmark on SBS free-to-air and I thought I'd launch the Optus Sport app for comparison (I get Optus Sport as a free bundle with my mobile plan anyway).

I notice that Optus streaming is a full 2 minutes behind the SBS game so I don't think you can actually call it "live" coverage. 2 minutes is a "delayed" coverage in my opinion.

Just for further comparison I launched the SBS stream via their app and it is only 10 seconds behind the free-to-air digital signal so Optus can't even use that as an excuse!

I think the streaming problems via the Optus Sport app are only the tip of the iceberg

    • Same as Foxtel. That’s normal in many countries too.

    • +1

While you can still do the comparison fire up SBS live stream of a match and compare it with Optus, SBS quality is way better than Optus though also delayed by about 30 seconds. Optus has been failing so hard on EPL for 2 years the quality is just sloppy and they have made no effort to fix it, I refuse to believe they couldn't do better but neither Optus or most Aussies care about the EPL unfortunately.
