D-Link Dual Band Wireless AC750 VDSL2+/ADSL2+ Modem Router

Been looking for a NBN compatible modem, came across this deal. Looks like one of the lower prices for AUS stock.

Note: this is only for NBN which uses VDSL (FttN, FttB and maybe FttC). That excludes HFC, FttH and Wireless.

    • Can be used on any NBN connection. Just use it as a router on the WAN port for other connections besides FTTN/B

On FTTC the NCD they give is essentially the VDSL modem as is the NTD for FTTH

    • I can't see why it can't be used for FTTC or FTTP because it has a WAN port and router built in.

You can, but it's a waste of money because you are paying for something which you don't use. And it would be incorrect to assume that you require a device like this for a fibre connection. You could get a much more high-spec standalone router without VDSL built in for the same price.

  • Does this connect at a fast speed though? I'm looking for a new modem after borrowing an iiNet provided one from a friend to do some troubleshooting and finding it maintains sync on my line at 40mb where my old fritzbox only syncs at 32mb a decent increase. So I'm thinking that like ADSL the chips in the modem have an affect on what speeds you get. But I'm yet to find anyone testing or reviewing modems based on the attainable sync?

So I'm thinking that like ADSL the chips in the modem have an affect on what speeds you get.

There's two common types of chipsets, Broadcom and Trendchip. To quote somebody on WP…

"Trendchip modems sync more aggressively on downstream with less tolerance for adverse conditions which is why they are only suggested for good, short lines. On medium to long lines a Trendchip modem may dropout often and provide worse performance than a Broadcom modem."

This is true for ADSL but I don't know if it still holds true for VDSL.

Edit this uses the Mediatek MT7510/MT7511 chipset.

Yep it's true that the SoC make a difference I believe it was the Broadcom ones that provided the highest attainable sync rate. Best buy for this was a Telstra TG799vac about $20 on ebay/gum. Note that SIP is locked down will need a separate ATA to have a voice service

      • Tg799vac have been solid for my fttn connection.

    Officeworks now has same price

  • yup if you own one of the routers in this list - https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2018/06/vpnfi… - then it's high time to buy a new router.
