  • Very good price. I purchased it 2 weeks ago with the US Father’s Day 20% off site wide deal. Ended up paying about $650 due to the max $100usd discount limit.

  • bought

also 4tb ironwolfs are cheaper by $5 than CA on shopping express

Is the Synology cheaper than Computer Alliance's deal the other day?

    • +1

      Yes, $641.75 vs $679.15.

  • Not sure if I want to pull the plug vs home made one with unRaid.

    • So much easier with one of these. I've got a ds413 been going strong for 5 years.

Only issue. Can't go bigger then 6tb hard drive.

      • I agree. I'm afraid of this failing. So many horror stories with their support online.

Atm, I got a computer from a friend, for free. 10 Year old computer, still going strong. Put unRaid on it, 6 HDD's and works like a charm.

Again, this is for business use, I'm afraid of the Synology fail :(

        • How locked in are you?

Ie: To synology, yes. But not to the same model? Not to the same revision firmware?

That used to be an issue with raid cards AFAIK.. but I thought you could plonk HDDs from one synology into another and they'd work immediately? I could be wrong, I'm not well informed.

I have both a custom NAS on a 24 bay rack server and a Synology DS412+.. The unRaid has given me numerous problems over the years, although so far I haven't lost any data luckily. The Synology NAS has never had a single issue in 6 years, and the drives have never had any issues. I've been using the Synology as a Plex server, along with a bunch of other apps and it's been brilliant. I've talked half a dozen other family members into using them and other than a single WD Red 4tb dying in 5 years there have bene no issues in any of their devices either.

      • +1

My synology is older then that and they keep updating the drive compatibility list.
Seems like there are drives you can use?

        DS413 HDD
        Seagate ST10000DM0004 - 1ZC101 BarraCuda Pro DN01 10TB

        https://www.synology.com/en-global/compatibility?search_by=p…

I also saw a reddit post in my very quick google of your issue and they seemed to indicate the it is the physical drive bay holders that might be the limit of the physically wide high capacity drives - not a software limit. Probably a few mm of plastic - I'm sure an enterprising person could work around that.

        • Didn't see that. I wouldn't buy the 10tb because it isn't a NAS drive.

You might be right in saying it is the physical size of the drive.

Hey matey, I have a DS413 too and I’ve just recently replaced 2 of my 4 HD’s with WD Red 10TB’s. Volume repaired successfully and absolutely no issues. I think they’ve just been a bit slack with the official DS413 compatibility list because the DS413 was discontinued ages ago. I also read something about the physical drive bays being a few mm too small for the bigger drives, but this wasn’t an issue at all for me when I went to install. Good luck!

I have an unRaid set up - took a little bit of time but it's fantastic.

The flexibility it gives you over a Synology is incredible.

    • +1

I've got a Synology NAS for storing documents and backups (which syncs to OneDrive also), a homemade i3 box running Synology OS (Xpenology) for my Plex server and a LaCie 5Bay NAS which has a shit OS, I managed to get Xpenology to run on also.
Can't recommend Synology enough, even using their OS on other hardware is great, as long as it isn't important data, as it is obvious not officially supported.

  • $628.15 at Amazon au for nab credit card holders and new user discount and cashrewards 5%

    (759-20)*(1-.1-.05)

Edit: Was free shipping yesterday. Now plus 11.90. Still marginally cheaper, but not much.

    • +3

You can’t get new user discount. All of them are 3rd party sellers. $20 only applies to Amazon’s stock.

      • Thanks, you're right. Also shopback 2% on eBay would make eBay cheaper anyway

        • I almost purchased it from amazon but it turns out ebay’s Was cheaper thus the decision. It is also worth to invest at least another ram module.

    "6TB 3.5" NSA HDD"
only HDD on the market that prevents US government from spying on you….

  • Any reason to upgrade to this from an hp n54l with 4 hdd's?

    • Yes it can hardware transcode x265 4k which is awesome if you want that/watch movies with subtitles. Other than the media streaming, not really.

  • Will the WD Red 8TBs work on this?

    • +1

Yep just installed 4 of them in mine

  • Damn bought one the other day for 670 :)

  • Is this NAS good for Plex? Or is there on better?

    • +1

Works great - 4K capable and if you have plex pass it will hardware transcode on the fly.
I even watched a 4k movie on my mobile remotely - good as gold.

Also I picked this model as you can add a 5 bay expansion NAS down the track.

    • This model is well known for being a great Plex server box.

  • Great NAS, Great Deal (use the synology plex package - hardware transcoding / 4k is excellent), great for that, also great if you want to run docker containers

For anyone who purchased it for around the $680 mark the other day from ebay.

if you had signed up to the ebay plus, you can request a return

I just placed a return with parcel point (haven't received it yet) and placed an order for this.

I know its only $40 but the parcel point place is one street away.
seems like little effort for $40

  • Expired ? Cannot get discount now on the drives or the NAS.

  • Expired I think. Not working for me.

    • Still working for me. Are you already used the coupon on something else?

  • +1

Thanks OP. Just spent $1075 on the NAS and 2 x 6TB reds. Arrghhh.. is this site supposed to be saving me money ? LOL.

I’ve had Synology for the last 10 years. Lifetime fan. Apparently they can run some great tv show apps like Sickrage and Sonar. They also have some great media apps for Samsung TV’s and AppleTV etc. One nifty app is Docker which can run things like Homebridge to get non HomeKit compatible smart devices to work in your Home app. It’s far more reliable than a Pi.

Time to retire my old DS411. Ordered the DS918+ with 4 x 8TB Ironwolf drives, 128GB Intel 760p for SSD cache and an extra 8GB RAM. Overkill for Plex but I plan to run some VM's and check out this Docker business.

  • I've already spent " Plus15 " on memory card , so the PLUS15 can not apply …

  • Which drive is better for NAS? WD Red or seagate ironwolf? Price is about the same.

Edit: ended up getting the 918+ and 2 x 8GB ironwolf drives for $1211 with the discounts. Finally I can combine the mess of 6 or 7 drives lying around with 1tb-3tb of data on them. Sick of external usb's running everywhere and trying to remember what movies I have on each of them!

I used my PLUS15 voucher on something else last night. Had other thing to purchase
Spoke with chat ebay plus support and told them i was purchasing multiple things(had 2 - 3 things in my cart from different stores for the PLUS15 sale) and i assumed that i had to do a separate purchase for each store. They will go through the Terms and Conditions etc.
They were very helpful and gave me a one off discount voucher that would have been the difference

  • should I wait for the 2019 model?

    • +5

Might as well wait for the 2025 model. I hear that it should be capable of 100000000tb.

      • that'll do me. bought one

  • I would lean towards UnRaid. But I haven't seen many HP MicroServers around lately. This is a great platform for a NAS.
