ive had the old version for ages, it's quite good for teaching kids math, and cool to see hand written numbers turn into solved equations.

I upvoted your comment because it is 100% factual and correct.

  • Will this help teach people the odds of winning lotteries?

I just tried it out. Very impressive. it would be good to use in those iPad classrooms to allow changing of variables to see new answers.

No comment is implied on my thoughts on iPad classrooms.

or they could just use pencil and paper and work out the answer themselves…

      • These days, kids learn about pen and paper in history class.

They could and they should and they would if they could. This is just another tool, but I believe it to be a possibly good tool, depending on how it is used. In particular, manipulating fractions is often a complex and difficult area of learning for students and the ability to manipulate parts of fractions while adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing could be beneficial. Being able to easily manipulate those fractions into mixed numerals, proper and improper fractions and decimals could be an aid in achieving the fifth and sixth grade national curriculum outcomes and perhaps lower depending on the ability of the student. To be of benefit, a fair degree of thought would have to be put into lesson planning, taking into account the particular cohort of students. On the spectrum of paper and pencil v technology assisted learning, I lean quite heavily towards paper and pencil and no erasers except in certain circumstances. I do acknowledge, however, that there are certain technologies that can significantly improve educational outcomes and differentiate lessons based on ability levels. In seeking to understand this better, I just spent several hours reading a Doctoral thesis on automaticity in math facts. I agree that paper and pencil are the superior tools in most circumstances, especially if erasers are not used. A single line through an error provides more information for both the student and the teacher than non-existent erased thoughts. I'm off to bed so I can give my best to the students today.
