Picked one up from Bunnings on Saturday. So far so good very handy to see who is at the door when not home. Cant fault it so far.

Can video be "streamed" to a NAS or something?

Or are we forced to pay for some crappy cloud service after this 30 day free trial?

    • Unfortunately can't be saved locally. Need to have Ring subscription which $4/month per camera or $15/month for multiple cameras.

      • Or $40 per year

      • Do you need to record footage? Just for any incidents I guess

Looks like the basic functionality is free, notifications, live feed. But saving recordings requires the 'optional' subscription.

There's integration for Home Assistant, but I'm not sure if the subscription is required to use it.

      —edit.

Please note that downloading and playing Ring video will require a Ring Protect plan.

So in Home Assistant, you can use the binary sensors - ding and motion, but for grabbing and viewing the video you need a paid plan.

should I get the next version?

I'm waiting for the version where you can remotely spray noxious gas at salesmen and then live stream it.

    • hahahaaa… vicious!

  • do these things come with some sort of security screws and are weather proof ?

i want to mount one at the gate on the street and maybe power from a solar panel, but also don’t want it getting stolen.

    • You need a special screw driver to remove it. If the person had one, they could probably come and remove it.
I think they replace it for you if it's stolen though.

If you're installing at the gate, you'll need to be mindful of how good your wifi signal is to that point. This needs a very stable and fast connection to function properly. I had to position a second wifi access point about ~3m from the doorbell because it was too flaky without it. I've seen plenty of reviews / comments on officeworks or JB site saying that their internet wasn't fast enough to accommodate, from memory it needs at least 10mb upload speed to work efficiently though I can't remember where I read that.

On your other questions, this is from the Ring.com FAQ Page:

WHAT IF SOMEONE STEALS MY RING DOORBELL?
Ring Doorbell is equipped with proprietary security screws that keep the device securely mounted. If your Ring Doorbell is stolen, please contact us with a police report and we will replace it free of charge.

CAN RING DOORBELL WITHSTAND THE ELEMENTS: EXTREME HEAT, COLD, RAIN AND SNOW?
Yes, Ring Doorbell will work in freezing temperatures and is resistant to rain water, however we do not recommend that you submerge your Ring Doorbell in water. Operating temperatures for Ring Doorbell are -20.56 ºC to 48.89 ºC.

  • Any feedback on the free functionality? Ie. how good is it with the live feed when someone presses the button, and the audio feed?

Using the AMAZON20 deal you can get this for $83.40 delivered

If you're less concerned on warranty, eBay can be much cheaper alternative? Only $55.

    Same manufacturer.

How do you know its the same manufacture?? It does look different to an OEM that's all. More concerned on how the quality compares to the original.

      • Because I travelled in China 2017 for trade fair, visited a few production line, being shown on various models.

        I saw these two models.

There are others, some being private labelled selling to Harvey Norman, Officeworks via some merchandising company (I can't give names, sorry).

RRP for AUD $200+ in 2017. I am unsure about now.

    • While it may be very similar or even the same hardware, my concern would be with support, eg providing and MAINTAINING an app for this doorbell. I feel that ring will be around as a company for a while and will ensure that their app will work with future phone OS updates. I'm not sure the same could be said about an unbranded Chinese clone.

      • Great point, I shared same question when I was merchandising.

Surely there are brands doing great job on software support and they deserved the credit.

But the average brands, I found any manufacturer can stop support on a product eventually, with countless examples.

I agree with you there are many cloned products, even cloned of clones, hahaha.

I won't say I have tested every single one available in the market, but fairly confident to say "they are the same".

  • I never put wiring up for a doorbell when i Built the house. Just wondering how long the internal battery lasts and does it require you to dismount it to replace?

And how does one who is not handy mount this??is it straight screws into wall plugs in brick?

    • Battery lasts a few months depending on how often it picks up motion. Two propritary screws attach it to the wall plate (very easy, just don't drop the bell like I did) and then the plate just screws into your wall, I think there's even a little bubble level on the plate to help you mount it straight.

      • Thanks so just a drill with masonry drill bit for getting the wall plater screwed into the wall?and any joe black with no weekend handyman experience could do??

Wondering if it costs a fortune otherwise to get an electrician to wire it permanently and do the screw mounting incidentally as part of cost?

I assume once you wire once you can replace it with any doorbell thst requires wiring?? Or camera etc. System doorbells and intercoms?

        • 1) Yep - it comes with masonry wall plugs.

          2) It wasn't worth it for me - I don't mind charging it every month.

          3) Yes, Ring uses standard wiring. It only needs power (wifi connection) so your wiring would need to be upgraded for an intercom I would imagine.

        • @coxjon:

Ok thanks. Maybe I will wait to see how much an electrician costs to install and whether to go for the more 'newer' models as it's an once off installation (might as well get something decent).

THe other question is whether other doorbell models/manufacturers may be better for video/remote access of seeing whose at the door.

  • I have Jaycar wired video door bell. If I replace it with Ring, can I still connect and use the same monitor?

    https://www.jaycar.com.au/hands-free-colour-video-door-phone…

    • No. Your current monitor is hardwired to your doorbell. Think of the ring doorbell as an IP camera. You will need to find a monitor that you can load the ring app onto ie Android tablet or iPad.

  • They supply a complete install kit screws wall plugs & screwdriver, battery life sucks depending on how wide you set the trigger area I have mine st to only 1 of the 3 zones available and I get about 5 to 6 days before the batter needs recharging, when I had 3 zones selected it was once every 2 to 3 days, I am in the process of putting a a el cheapo solar panel to keep the battery charged, to charge the battery you use the screwdriver supplied, remove the front cover, clip the battery out & recharge with the supplied USB Cable

    • "I get about 5 to 6 days before the batter needs recharging, when I had 3 zones selected it was once every 2 to 3 days"

Do you mean months? If it's days, you either have a tonne of traffic triggering your camera or you've set it to Live view. I've had mine for about 6 wks, charged it fully about 5 wks ago and it's at 79% right now. I get about 5-10 motion detection a day

    • Wow really short. Probably cheaper to see if it can be permanently wired by an electrician?

  • Did the price go back up? :s
