Qantas is having a sale on flights to Tokyo, Japan. Travel in May to June 2019. Flights from Melbourne and Brisbane are direct to and from Tokyo. Flights from all other cities involve brief layovers in Melbourne. Qantas is a full-service carrier, so these fares include checked luggage and in-flight meals.

Good prices……picture is a bit misleading though…….only a couple of hard to find double petal cherry blossoms will be left on the trees at Lake Kawaguchi in May.
This was in May 2018 - from the same area in Kawaguchiko…. https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/29438/60093/c8e66521-c…

    • +12

Sorry - we only have 1 picture per airport, so thats the one for Tokyo.

      • So has the issue with higher price for clicking through your link compared with going directly to that website or via skyscanner been rectified yet?

    • +2

Yeah such promo photos are posed by professional model cities. ;)

    • Probably plastic trees

    • +2

Hey I was there in may too! We should’ve had an ozbargain meet up.

May 12-13 for me. Actually booked it from this IWTF post which I didn’t even upvote :( https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/363318

If anybody books these flights, go out of your way to visit Kawaguchiko.

Couple of more pix of Fuji, with a storm brewing and it’s halo….

Ah Okay. i was there at the end of May, between 29-30. I recommend the hotel we stayed at - mystays kawaguchiko. They had a nice onsen on the rooftop. Would go there again but might go to Osaka next time. I checked the same dates and it was $611 ex Brisbane, pretty good if you include the promo code.

I went on that Jetstar return for free deal, which was $300 from the Gold Coast. Looking back I’d pay a bit more to fly from Brisbane (with bags/food). We ended up buying luggage on the return leg and bought delicious convenience store food), so the true cost was about $400 return pp + time.

@iSamurai: Osaka sucks too many mainland Chinese buying everything.

        • @Turd: really? I also thought about going to Kobe and Kyoto. I did see a lot of Chinese tourists in Tokyo though - so probably about the same I guess?

        • +1

@iSamurai: Pretty much every major touristy areas have Mainland Chinese. It's a shame, they ruin the experience, just because they are cashed up and have many Sydney house properties, and bring their own culture and dont respect Japanese clean and quiet culture.

This is what they do too - https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2017/11/19/national/crime-…

        • That’s really unfair to say so!!!!
Bad behaviour ppl everywhere, even in oz!!
What a shame to judge ppl by nationality:(((

        • @Turd: Donald Trump is that you tweeting again?

To be fair and accurate, plenty of bogans travel not just 'mainlanders'. While in Japan, cities and rural, we encountered many bogans from China (mainland and Hong Kong), Korea, Thailand and whaddya know, some elderly Japanese folks too.

On a side note, those mainland Chinese tourists are keeping many businesses and economies ticking along. Don't like them? Don't take their money =P

        • @Turd: then it is no difference with Aussie bogans in Bali, Phuket and many others Asian cities…, British bogan in Majorca.

I guess you are ABC with such racist comments yet you and your parents are taking advantage of the inflated Sydney house price because of Chinese buyers.

These taxi services you posted is no difference with Uber when they started it here. So did you use Uber back then when they first started illegally here? If so then you are no difference with these Chinese tourists.

It all comes down to money anyway. Taxi in Japan is a big rip-off and they clearly even push to block Uber to protect their high profit.

    RIP Perth and WA

We are a different country. Of course we are not included.

  • A little off topic, but does anyone have the terms for that code? EOFY50. Can I use it for VA flights to HK?

    • applies to all flights booked through BYOJet over $500

limited to $500 per order though so if youre booking for two people might want to make separate bookings :)

  • Good for someone who just wanna to go and chill..

Keep in mind they have a massive long public holiday in May …

    • Yes, "Golden Week" - a very busy time for Japanese travellers in first week in May. Accommodation & transport then can be hard to find.

I've found basic Airbnb can be only option in some places. I love festivals & there are some good ones in that week. Spent GW2017 in Hamamatsu for giant kite flying / kite fights in the sand dunes🎏

Above dates look to be after that busy week.

  • Does this include seat selection and eligible for classic rewards upgrade?

    • +1

no and no. (seat selection if your QF status allows free selection).

  • Stupid question but i couldn't find it, does this include checked in baggage? or is that extra?

    • +1

5th sentence of description: Qantas is a full-service carrier, so these fares include checked luggage and in-flight meals.

      • FailJeff,
        Thank you1

  • Just sucks about the airbnb situation.

    • +1

OMG I hadn't heard about this! Airbnb in Japan was great last year, so sad they seem to have gutted it, at least temporarily.

    • +1

there are still plenty of airbnb places for tokyo

      • +1

I just checked… there are… but they're all pretty expensive, prices comparable to hotels.

From my experience you might easily find a good hotel on sale cheaper than these Air BnB places.

    • +1

Likely to be largely resolved by time of these flights. It was the new registration law that threw things into turmoil.

But I know hosts who bought & renovated homes in rural villages, who will now face financial stress as they will be limited to 180 days per year for Airbnb… There are few other places to stay there, affecting the local economy. So will likely lead to fewer accommodation options.

    • +1

Was extremely annoying, I can't imagine how it would be for people leaving mid June.

AirBNB did refund amount and gave a coupon of same value to use anywhere else on AirBNB AND a $100 "experience" voucher PER BOOKING. They also had a $10 million fund for special cases where plans were ruined beyond accomo. Pretty impressive and we ended up 'saving' $900 between two.

Lots of the listings are now far more expensive and many in areas further away from the major cities are now completely gone.

  • -7

This is not the cheapest way to buy these airfares.

If you would like these airfares at a cheaper price:

    1) Book DIRECT with BYOjet and use the promo code EOFY50.
    2) Pay directly through BYOjet platform.

(If you click through IWTF you will pay an extra ~$2-$5 for their trailing commission.)

@IWTF can you confirm that your prices are the same as BYOjet?

    • +3

      Thanks Alan

    • -6

“To get the absolute cheapest price” is simply misleading @IWTF as this is not the absolute cheapest price. You need to go direct to BYOjet to get the “absolute cheapest price.”

      • +5

You really need to drop this vendetta against IWTF or start posting your own deals if you beleive you always manage to find them cheaper.

    • +20

      Hi,

I have explained already that we are in discussion with BYOJet and Aunt Betty about them offering different prices through IWTF vs direct. As I explained, they set the price - we get a whole 1c extra for each dollar more, so we definitely want the prices to be the same.

I have to ask - why is it that you never bring this up with any of the posts with Kayak, FlightScount, Skyscanner etc that have exactly the same pricing difference? (ie cheaper to go direct than through FlightScout/Kayak/skyscanner)

  • Hello,

Probably too late (May) but planning a snowboard trip.

Has anyone who has gone taken their own gear? How much extra to BYO board and gear for the flights?

Which month would be recommended for snow?

    • Ski and snowboard equipment is counted as part of your baggage allowance on Qantas. If you have more than your allowance, you can pre-purchase additional kg's or it is $35/kg at check in.
Jan & Feb are best for snow

      • Thanks.

        Appreciated.

  • Is BYOJET trustworthy? Have you guys booked with them before? I’ve only booked direct with airline and through Flight Centre/STA Travel before. Any difference in service from usual travel agent?

    • +2

No problems with BYOJet, have used them a lot. Never had to contact support so can't comment on that, but if they're like any of the other cheaper ones it will be terrible.

      • Last time I used their support (a few years ago now) there were very nice and professional blokes from Brisbane in call centre - surprisingly good customer service.

  • +3

Thanks op. Just got back, already missing Japan. Booked in again in June but I have plans to go over the new year too.

  • +2

Just bought a ticket! Thanks, OP! I've never bought a flight on impulse before, let along to a country I've never been to. Oh OZBargain, you'll be the death of my bank account!

  • +1

    OP
Are you related to Scotts Cheap Flights in any capacity?

    • No - They are a competitor.

  • +2

the ones from sydney do a stopover in melbs.. waste of time to go south.
easy to get a cheap price if you're wasting hours going the other way around.

and IWTF doesn't save the settings, so every time you change date, you need to go back and untick all and tick qantas..

    • yeh that caught me off guard, i just assumed modern websites remember your previous page settings

either way, incredibly cheap deal for a melb > tokyo direct flight.

only thing is i want to go sometime this year…

    • Hi,

Can you post a link for the page with the problem? I'll see what we can do to fix it.

      Cheers.

      • any page.
the left hand side filter column…
if you make a selection there.. you change the date, and it doesn't remember it.

PS: any sydney tokyo direct flights?
love the bargains you post, but very difficult to find some myself.. if you have any preference at all.. such as direct flights.

        • Hi - Thanks for that. Definitely a bug - it should be remembering your settings after each new page reload. I'll try to get that fixed shortly.

Looking at our data, it appears that Qantas does not fly direct to Narita (Tokyo) airport. It flies direct to Haneda airport (which is also counts as Tokyo) but direct flights start at $874.

  • any deals for flights to jpn in nov 2018?

  • Hey store rep, when does this actual Qantas flight sale end? As in the $600 return deal (not the $50 off deal). Still deliberating dates etc but don't want to miss out on these flights!

    • is it just when sold out or when they feel like stopping it it'll stop sorta thing…

  • Promo code still works even after last time I checked

  • So am about to book for a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 children), but have some questions/observations (Ade-Jap return)?

    • Fares direct via Qantas website are more expensive, but not by heaps (about $40 per head, not including 1 off $50 saving for a combined booking).
    • Children booked via Qantas website pay 75% of fare, unsure if BYOJet do this (didn't want to sign up to a fare to find out and can't see how without providing phone, email and everything for passenger before being able to enter passenger 2 details).
    • Change to flight is $140 per person per fare. x4 this = $560 (or $1120 if changing both ways), in addition to the $400 per fare you pay Qantas.
    • My understanding is the BYOJet fare saving is $50 for total unless booking separate tickets, which just wouldn't work for a family of 4.

Thus my conclusion is using IWTF / BYOJet you are making a saving, as per the natural want/right of any ozbargainer, but it's going to cost you a lot more if things don't go right, and in the case of a family I don't think it's worth it.

Think I'll just book direct with Qantas tonight.

    • +1

Booking via agent will incur hefty change fee. You can book directly with Qantas and submit a Price Promise claim wih Qantas
      https://www.qantas.com/travel/airlines/price-promise/global/…

As long as the agent you price beat with has ABN and screenshot is taken after you booked with Qantas. Also you need to submit the claim within the same day you book.

      • Thanks @samehada. Flights booked last night (ran a bit over time to get them booked..)
