(*)NOTE: You can now buy the "Essential" version of this drive for $99.00 at Officeworks. However, the Essential series is for Mac/PC only as it requires software to be installed to get full functionality. The "Elite" has that stuff on-board. Also, the Essential warranty is 2yr vs 3yr for the Elite.

Not the greatest value $/GB or even USB 3 ,BUT, seeing as how this is a great individual price +1 vote here. I think warranty + screen is worth the extra couple of $.
Edit- Carlingford NSW, had one left

  • From memory the elite has WD Bloatware attached. I'm not 100% sure about this

    • FYI - the Essential series contains the bloatware which needs to be installed (loads only as a virtual CD drive on first plug in). This is the Elite - loads immediately as a removable drive.

      • I have two x 2TB WD essential drives and I didnt have to install anything to use them. They were just plug and play. My understanding was that the bare bones "essential" series had no software attached.

        • Nope, the Essential series loads up a virtual CD drive with bloatware on it. It is possible, using WD software from their website, to hide this.

        • i use mine on a mac - would that make a difference? I had to format my essentials so i could use it on my mac. Would this have made a difference. I've never had anything loaded onto my computer. They work fine…

Yeah that's right i always buy the cheapest ones like the elements or basic ones.

I once bought one of these elites with the screen and had all sorts of trouble with it.
It IS the one that insists on installing its own bullshit software - and it makes your computer think you're plugging in some sort of CD drive as well as the external. I couldn't even format it to get rid of all the shit. I had to contact WD support and they explained a way I could remove the software - but then that disabled the screen.

Ended up returning the damn thing and saved 50 bucks buying another WD elements.

Stay right away from these Elites.

  • I've heard that embedded hardware encryption such as this isn't as secure as software encryption such as Truecrypt. Can anyone confirm?

  • i was going to buy this before i read the reviews from amazon. check them out.

  • Yes lots of negatives reviews for the new backup software (WD SmartWare) very limited control of what is backup, slow…But if you don't use it or use another software to back up, i think should be OK.

not just that, the performance is not great as it is a 5400rpm drive.

      • Dont think anyone actually buys a USB2 external hdd for performance.
