Sony A6500 Premium E-Mount APS-C Camera with 18-135mm Lens $1647.75 (Plus $100 EFTPOS Gift Card) @ Sony Kiosk

60

Hey OzBargainers,

I have gotten the Sony A6500 + 18-135mm OSS lens for $1900 at an unnamed Sony Kiosk (I don’t want any issues with the seller because they were quite helpful in helping me get a bargain). You also get a $100 EFTPOS gift card when you purchase the camera before July 31st. They top it up instantly when you purchase it so you don’t have to wait a long time doing the online form.

Overall, you are paying $1800 for the camera and lens. The lens retails for around $886 online (Ted’s Cameras), so you are basically getting the A6500 body for <$1,000. Although a newer model may or may not be dropping soon, you can still sell this later on and make a profit (hopefully) or a slight loss.

I have a picture of the receipt. I hope that would suffice.

Good day to you all.

UPDATE - The kiosk will price match VideoPro, show them the eBay 20-25% sale terms and conditions page. Thanks @shalashaska for informing me about VideoPro's price.

  • If trying to preserve the identity of the sony shopfront consider redacting the street address (can probably leave sydney there'd be a few there).

    • That is the address of the head office, not the kiosk.

  • "unnamed sony kiosk" = back of a truck? :p

  • They won't get in trouble. You can reveal.

The invoice has been generated through their POS. The distributor has a record of the transaction at that price by now.

Not a bad price but isn't far off the usual. A6700 incoming.

Would wait until tomorrow's ebay sale to see if videopro price jack or not.

    https://m.ebay.com.au/itm/Sony-A6500-Camera-w-18-135mm-Zoom-…

No jacking and 25% (ebay +) off would bring it down to 1,647.70 for local stock.

    • They already price jacked the camera and the lens, was $1.997 like 2 weeks ago.

    • Or Ryda ebay @ 1746.63 Shipped.

TBH, 18-135 isn't a really good lens. It has almost all the problems a lens can have with that price point. It's more like a lens Sony throw out to be used for normal holiday photos. In this case, don't really need A6500?

      • Thank you guys for the information, I'm gonna return the product.

        • Sorry for ruining your day :)

As usual, pay more for the lens, and pay less for the body.

        • @ausdday: Out of interest, what would you recommend as an E mount zoom lens for this camera then?

        • @ausdday: They refunded me the difference off the VideoPro 'potential' price :D

        • @Polt: I'm loving my SONY FE 16-70mm ZA OSS f4. Great lens.

        • @ONEMariachi: read lots of bad reviews about 16-70 though, and lots of good reviews about 18-135.

        • @Polt: Here are 3 apsc lenses for consideration: Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN (~$600), Sigma 30mm F1.4 DC D (~$624), Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS (~$725)

        • @Polt: I have the 18-105 f4 oss and it's easily my go to do everything lens. Great all-rounder and can be had for around 600 to 700 bucks

        • @shalashaska: Thanks team, appreciate the input. My only reservation about the 18-105 f4 or full frame lenses is the size… doesn't having a big lens like that defeat the purpose of a relatively small mirrorless camera? I realise it's not huge compared to other lenses out there, but it's substantially bigger than the 18-135 - here are both zooms next to a 50mm http://j.mp/2m8iU9l

        • @Polt:

That's the dilemma for having a mirrorless camera :)

To have a good image, you need:
          1. Enough light. Smaller lens allows less light through, compared to bigger lens.
          2. Lights quality. Lights need to go through more glasses in the zoom lens, compared to prime lens.

Therefore, good lens usually have these characteristic:
          1. Big and bulky, partly due to the build quality as well.
          2. Single focal length, or minimum focal length range (around 3x) for zoom lens.
          3. Big aperture, to allow more lights in.

ps: if you know you are going towards full frame, perhaps you can start looking into full frame lenses now. I made a mistake last time when I was using APS-C, by looking only at crop sensor lens. Now I have to upgrade my whole kit after I got my A7ii.

pps: Don't be afraid to go 3rd party lens. They are good, and usually cheaper, especially newer releases. A lot of Zeiss and G lenses has been there since the first A7 and NEX. Their AF speed sometimes couldn't catch up with the latest A7iii and A6500. On the other hand, Sigma, Tamrom and Samyang just joined the E mount AF bandwagon, and they do have quite good lenses, at a lower price tag.

        • @ausdday: Yea I hear you, and I did grab a prime lens when I bought the camera, I'm just thinking that while travelling, I'd ideally like a zoom for distance, and a fast prime (which I have) for lower light etc. Disclaimer: newbie photographer who has only ever owned point and shoots. I'm guessing I'll just need to use the setup for a while and figure out naturally what I need (or want).

On the 3rd party lenses: do you lose any functionality by not going with a Sony lens? Not sure how it works…

        • @Polt: less of the third party lenses will have stabilisation - some do, but less common - but with the A6500 you have that in-body stabilisation, so don't really have to worry about that. I don't know whether to thank you or not for posting the deal :-) now I'm tempted to upgrade my A6000 to A6500

updated the deal, thanks so much.

    • Just managed to snag one from VideoPro for this price. Thanks again for this comment.
For anyone else interested, 3 remaining at the time of this post.

Bought an A6500 (body only) from Video Pro during the last 20% off sale, can confirm no price jacking.

Yet to find out (camera is due to arrive in the next few days) if Sony will give me the $150 eftpos card for a purchase via eBay…

    • I have contacted Video Pro on eBay and they responded straight away saying that purchase from their store is eligible for the cashback.

      • Sweet! That makes a good deal even better. Now to wrangle an overseas trip to claim TRS as well…

Comparing to Ted's does not make a bargain. They overcharge. Even without that comparison, this isn't even remotely a bargain.

  • Wow, cameras sure have gotten more expensive since I was last into photography. The A6000 was a reasonably affordable camera.

    • indeed so when compared to this.
around 70% cheaper than this when I bought it!

    • I got my A6000 basically for free. George's cameras in the city were offering a trade-in deal through Sony, which was just a clean swap. Just had to give them a camera. Any old camera. My mate gave me one he was about to throw in the bin as he'd dropped it and the repairs were too expensive. A6000 is still a fantastic camera.

    • Electronics have gone up by 40% in the last 4-5 years. It is depressing :(

  • Rumor rumor A6700, lots of grain salt! I reckon wait for Photokina 2018 (September is 2 months away) see what Sony has in store for us.

  • Hi OP, would you be able to send me a copy of the invoice please? I would like to give a go with some camera stock near me.
    Thanks
