Amazon Prime Day 2018 General Discussion

Just creating a general discussion thread for the upcoming Amazon Prime Day on 16 July 2018. Please put all the Prime Day related discussions here, and other Prime Day related forum threads will be merged here. All Prime Day related deals will also be tagged Amazon Prime Day. I guess the main deal they are trying to push would be the Prime membership sign ups, as more and more Prime features will be released.

Lucky I was able to get the Switch. It was all gone in about a minute.

    • Yep I got one too, they didn't last long at all

  • I have an Amazon US account, and just used the Prime deal from Amex…do i have to make a new account for AU, or can i switch my US one over? Confused!

    • +1

      switch over

    • I have also encountered this complication, I have a US Amazon account with 3mth Prime thanks to Amex, but can't find the option to transfer the Prime membership to my AU account; even though this says I can?

How do you go about doing this switch?

  • Is anyone else on amazon au site following the prime day sales ….. my deals run out at page 30 with no more pages ? and the sale has another day to run.

    • It seems like lightning deals are finished for the day except for random few after midnight. Not sure if decent deals will come again tomorrow or if the sale is still running via the 'deal of day' items which are still active for another 29 hours or so (meaning still kind of running).

      • +1

Ahh yeah i get it now thanks

  • +2

Wonder if theyre going to post more deals?

  • Was today the "half" day then?

    • +1

      yes

      • are there going to be deals every hour even during sleep time?

  • I have never shopped from Amazon AU yet lol, hoping to find good bargains today.

  • How often are new deals added?

  • -3

Why doesnt Amazon have any phones/deals?
Nothing exciting about Amazon. Ebay is so competitive

  • +1

I'm thinking of getting a GOOLOO 800A Peak 18000mAh Portable Car Jump Starter battery pack
    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0748D8KT6/ref=gbps_tit_m-9_798…

Does anyone have experience with it? If it's recommended?

    Thanks!! :)

  • when do the deals end?

  • Rattle you Gerry with this Prime.

  • Tried posting this deal, but the seller is banned due to an insecure website. Bloody nice monitor for the price:

    Astivita 31.5" Inch, 2560x 1440, 75hz IPS LED @ $303.50 Delivered
    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07BF3YGVZ

$7 more than this Viewsonic deal here, but you get 75hz vs 60hz: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/390554

    • 2ms Response Time Ultra Slim Frameless IPS LED Panel
    • VESA Compatible
    • 75Hz at 2k Resolution
    • Integrated Dual Speakers: 2 x 2 watt
    • 20,000,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio
    • 1200:1 Static Contrast Ratio
    • HDMI, DVI & DisplayPort compatibility, as well as an earphone out port.
    • For your convenience we have included a HDMI, DVI & DisplayPort cable in the packaging at no extra cost.
    • This thread describes why the seller is banned. Dunno why this means I cant post an amazon link, as the issue is with their own website:
      https://www.cheapies.nz/node/16399

      • ah, also interested on the monitor, guess the seller could be dodgy but if from amazon should be pretty safe?
Guess AOC or viewsonic would be a better brand..reviews on amazon seems okay.

  • If an item is on sale on the US Amazon Prime Day, but isn't on Amazon AU, will it be later? It's an Invicta Pro diver and ships from Amazon US anyway according to Amazon AU, but is still full price, despite the US site having it for sale

  • +2

Amazon prime seems to be having a slow day today, unless you are in a market to buy games.

    • Pretty sure you can get the 32" AOC 1440p monitor for about $260 in the ebay plus PROXY deal. Picture quality is probably worse though as it's VA not IPS. Quick Google search of the Amazon monitor suggests it's a Korean 2nd grade panel so there may be a higher chance of defects like clouding, backlight bleed, dead pixels, etc.

      • +1

i see, might give this a missed then…continue monitor hunting…

  • +5

would love to see need some Switch games deals

  • Anyone having any luck with cash rewards tracking?

    • bought one thing and no tracking yet

      • Might have to end up emailing them tax invoice as usual:(

    • As it states on the Cashrewards website

Notification: 4 days from shipping date

Once the item is marked as shipped by Amazon, it should then track in your account with 4 or so days

    • My Echo Dot that I purchased yesterday morning tracked today.

  • +1

    How much has everyone spent?

I am sitting at $640, which is nuts, because I was planning on splurging on a new GPU. Instead I got a few PS4 games (missed GoW), controller, PS4 Pro, Philips Hue set, Nappies (not the only one the wife knows about).

I am going to get a lot of mail as most were separate orders.

Best deal for me is the PS4 Pro followed closely by the Philips Hue Colour Starter Kit at $139.

    • +1

$240 of protein yesterday and 2 monitors for $600 today :-/

Thats a good deal on the hue kit. They are great.

    • Lots of small things and a switch. I picked up the switch for my sister only to find out she bought one a few days ago.

      • Lol, should be able to log in and cancel?

        • I think that will be the case. Asking a few friends if they want one but those who do, already own one.

    • Only logged in to check if this frenzy was real….spent about 300$.

  • +1

It seems the most popular things have been
    Toliet paper
    Washing Powder (Napisan etc)
    Tissues

they literally sell out in seconds.

    • +7

I guess poo, sweat and snot never go out of fashion.

    • The toilet paper and tissues weren’t even that good, lol

The nappies were a steal! But I missed out :(

  • So is that it? no more "upcoming deals" as of 6pm?

  • +3

    Got to love Amazon.

"Usually dispatched within 1 to 2 months."

Well. Then… What about if things really go bad?

And just to be clear, not a third party seller:

"Ships from and sold by Amazon AU. Gift-wrap available."

The gift wrap is handy given it will probably arrive just in time for Christmas.

  • Spoke to soon… more things starting.. mostly 4K Blu Rays
    Batman etc

    • How to see this? When I go to prime deals it just has tiles for standard Amazon stuff like video, audiophile etc. No actual goods :(

  • How did we all go?
I did not expect to buy much
    ended up spending $560.00
Managed to use cash rewards on every purchase too :P

(did not buy any consoles as i already have them)

    • +1

$520, I'm not that far behind haha

      • +1

while it was no where near the quality of the US version.. i think it was a decent first year, they had some pretty decent deals for gamers, new mums (and dads) and the like.
I would like to see more brands get on board for next year.
Given this is essentially a promotional day to "sell" prime subscriptions, was not to bad at all.

        • +3

I thought it was a rubbish sale. All I got was an Echo dot.

        • +1

          @leethompson:

I was surprised. PS4 Pro for $379, Philips Hue kit for $139. Great deals

        • +1

I cancelled my Prime membership today, but will keeping eBay Plus for a year. That's how I rate the two at this stage.

        • @Charlie Dont Surf:
My only issue with eBay plus is the removal of free shipping as an option for sellers. Forcing buyers to subscribe for free shipping (without a threshold like amazon) and having two different discount systems (25% off tech for plus and 20% for non plus) means I won’t be supporting eBays subscription model.

        • @jimbobaus:

OH really? So sellers cant offer free shipping anymore on ebay? I havent been on ebay since the ebay plus model came into play, thats really annoying.

      • I …ahem, spent about 3k or more :(, I am not looking forward to the credit card.

        • +1

Buy and whinge? Maybe you should have left them for others who buy and celebrate?

    • +1

$0. Could've bought the $6 HDMI cable, but the savings weren't worth using up my Prime trial for.

    • +1

have your purchases been tracked by cashrewards yet?

      • Takes a few days after shipping for them to track so not yet no.

      • usually i get a email about my tracking within minutes of my orders but not a single email about tracking with any of my amazon orders over the last couple of days.

  • +2

I wish there was a day when I can sell all the unneeded crap to amazon, can do free delivery too. Then I will be rolling in cash and it's those bastards problem what to do with 3 kettles, 2.5 coffee machines, bunch of mixers and a box of eneloops.

  • +1

Is it a good time to get a kindle?

  • +1

Rather disappointing that Amazon Australia is not having any sale on smartphones - in particular is the Sony range.
Amazon US, DE, and UK have some really good deals on the Sony Xperia range.

    • +2

Well given that it is expected that Sony will announce their exit from the Australian smartphone market later this month (along with Middle East, turkey and Africa) I don’t find it surprising.

      • what really? I have generally purchased sony smartphones over the past few years, with a google phone in between and a samsung before. I found the Sony phones to have good build quality as well as good software.

      • Where are you getting the info that Sony mobile is exiting from AU? Cannot find any articles on this.

  • +2

Most boring sale ever, like a crappy version of catchoftheday. Maybe just in front of click frenzy.

  • +5

Managed to keep spending to under $100 (which seems modest after looking through this thread). Grabbed 3 PS4 games and a slab of coke. Was right on the verge of upgrading to the PS4 Pro, until the mrs pointed out that our old cheapo FHD TV wouldn't be good enough to notice any difference. I hate it when she introduces logic into my OzBargaining…

Was also very close to picking up the ring doorbell, but was put off the by the thought of paying for yet another subscription, just for video storage. Now that Amazon owns ring, hopefully they sweep the Ring subscription into Prime. Then I'll happily jump on board.

As far as thoughts on the sale in general…I think it would pay for Amazon to go for quality over quantity. My enthusiasm for the sale quickly faded once I realised I had to trawl through pages of junk to find a somewhat decent deal. If the good deals weren't posted on OzB, I probably wouldn't have bothered buying anything.

    • +6

Really good points about "quality over quantity" and the "pages of junk" - it was like a garage sale with piles of crap and the very rare item of interest here and there

      • +1

        Yea well said

        • compared to what I could have bought in the states and elsewhere it was crap.

    • Pro enabled games on a FHD TV usually have the option to run at 60 fps, or SSAA (downsampled from 4K). It's not a complete waste, plus you will be future proofing for the day you get a 4K TV.

  • +3

Today's (Tuesday) prime day has been very lackluster. They couldn't match the deals of day 1. Nothing caught my eye. Have to say very disappointed.

I was hoping ebay would throw a 15% off sitewide out of fear of Amazon. They seem to be about as meh about it as I am.

  • I spent 8.11 on a baby gift. It was cheaper than Myer by a dollarish lol. There was so much hype, I clicked on their site so much to see what was on sale. So much disappointment.

I’m interested to hear what you guys bought and how much was spent as well!

  • Bought nothing. Waste of time deals.

  • +3

Can’t help but feel it showed the slow, insidious creep of Amazon.

Where else can I buy a $4 bottle of Finish Rinse Aid and have it shipped to my door for free (with no minimum order value)?

Looking forward to what comes next.

  • +1

    Read this in todays paper.

    https://www.theage.com.au/business/companies/amazon-s-lightn…

What is people's opinion. Is Amazon a) being disingenuous, b) don't they know their business model or c) they are being Ozbargained? Discuss.

    • +3

wow…cant believe people are bashing Amazon for bringing the lightning deals? That's pretty un-ozbargain haha…Well, to be honest, I find some pf Amazon Prime lightning deals are much better than Click Frenzy/ Catch of the day deals in the past…

      • I agree with your comments on click frenzy/ catch of the day but if you check the posts for Amazon Prime some of the deals are similar. Too short a time to be anything but a loss leader gimmick.

        • +2

They are short deals for in-demand items, but I haven't had issues getting any of the deals I've wanted, even the ones that sell out in less than 30 seconds. The website doesn't crash, it's responsive and if you click it as it goes live, you'll in most cases get one.

People just whinge because they don't know when the deal is going live, and aren't prepared to click buy as soon as it starts. I've also had great success with being on the Waiting List.

Meanwhile Catch of the Day is a complete fail. I've never managed to get anything from there. The website crashes and it's sold out in less than 5 seconds.

        • @cyrax83: Glad it works for you and thanks for the tips for some people as to how they might get onto a deal.

  • IMO it wasn't all bad, bought number of beauty products from misses which was slightly cheaper than Chemist Warehouse discounted price, some shirts which were very cheap compare to Myer and DJ special price. So I don't have much to complain for, oh BTW all with no shipping fee…bloody good.

  • +1

Can't see any PC parts in this sale, which is quite a shame…

  • +1

So let me get this straight: the deals that mattered were:
    1) PS4 Pro.
    2) G7X II.
    3) $50 off a hard drive.
    4) Some video games.
    5) Discount on Amazon Echo.

And some of those only IF!!! you got them for the few minutes that were up.

Did I miss anything? Did anyone break even on their Prime membership???

    • +1

Did anyone break even on their Prime membership???

It was a free trial? So even buying one thing was more than breaking even on the shipping costs normally?

      • I wonder how many will forget to cancel.

Amazon AU can go fly a kite.

And it seems I did miss the ~$80 saving on the Nintendo Switch.

    • Nintendo switch at $315 was a good buy! Got two of them!

    • +1

Was a good deal on some essentials - nappies, toilet paper, dishwashing tablets. Save more than the 5% Woolies/Coles e-gift cards by some margin, and better than buying in significant bulk from Costco.

Savvy shoppers could lower their general cost of living markedly with these kinds of opportunities

    • Maybe they were the deals that mattered to you… I picked up a DJI drone at a significant discount, Bose QC35II's at a decent price, a cheap video doorbell, etc.

Not to mention the normal low prices on day to day items (deodorant, vitamins, etc), and the other deals that they've had (50% off shoes, 50% off wifes bras), and great release day prices on new games.

I've more than had my $$ worth of the membership, I've made it back in shipping alone.

  • +1

Ended up getting $30 credit from this sale - tried to buy something in their lightning sales but the product disappeared as soon as I check out (it was the pikachu toy for my kid). Funny thing is that they only seem to have 3 quantity on offer.

  • Bought a few things to make the most of the Prime membership +$10 credit. I thought the Optimum Nutrition protein deal was pretty good, 2.2kg for $34.97 delivered (with $10 credit). Bought a travel adapter for $13, looked OK quality, and a 2 pack of Hanes trunks for $8.91. Yeah a lot of junk though that was mostly ignored…

  • Wasn't planning on buying anything…. bought $1100 worth :o.

Very happy with the deals that I did get however.

  • Had a great prime day, some awesome bargains - spent about $465 minus about $37 from cashrewards. Already have the Xbox and Switch so didn't grab those.

    PS4 Pro 1TB - $369
    PS4 Dual Shock $29.99
    FIFA 18 PS4 - $0 (promo)
    Scotch Tape - $1.22
    Call of Duty PS4 - $9.99

    Last Jedi 4K - $9.99
    Goodfellas 4K - $9.99
    The Revenant 4K - $14.99
    Ready Player One 4K - $19.99

    • Forgot the 4 x Whiskey glasses and the AmoVee Acrylic Headphone Stand

    • that ready player one price is amazing seeing it's only been out a few weeks
