not in mine unfortunately :( (velocity platinum)

    • +1

      you are the real MVP

    • thx!

      just registered :)

    • @OP

maybe add Ninja's link to your listing.

    • +1

thx will add this in the main post

  • +1

So based on the introductory price, that makes it $30 for 12months…brilliant!

    • it is worth it tho? ebay offer $29 for 1 year

      • +3

        Yes

      • depends how much you shop there and whether you watch prime video.

        • I never watched any but will consider

        • I've got a prime video membership from the french offer a while back - any idea if the Australian offerings be the same? I heard the US offering is different

        • +1

          @aragornelessar:

Can confirm, U.S Prime Video is much much better than the Australian version. The movies and tv shows are newer and you get a lot more choice.

Use a VPN to get access to the U.S version.

        • @emoticon: Even with VPN (set for the US), it shows the same list as that for Aus. Any trick?

  • Only payments for Amazon Prime monthly or annual memberships are eligible for the offer. All other payments at Amazon.com.au are ineligible.

Does that means the credit will not be apply for buying stuff on Amazon?

    • +1

      Yes.

      • So if i no intend to pay for the subscription after trail, will have been no use for this offer?

        • +4

          That’s correct.

        • +1

          @ihavecentsnotsense:

          Thanks for your answer

        • @LoveBargain15: Just to clarify if you signed up just for monthly installments and continued for 1 month. You would be able to get 50% off the monthly installment and a purchase…. up to the value of $30. Hope that makes sense.

        • @gdiddy7:

so do i need to sign up for a month and make the purchase immediately?

          I am a bit confused.

      • But will Amex be able to distinguish the difference? What does the invoice entry for a prime subscription say?

        • I’m not sure, but it’s pretty clear in the terms that it has to be purchased through the particular web link. I think it’s be easy for them to distinguish between the purchasing of goods from their website, particularly from a third-party supplier, and the creation of a subscription-based service that Amazon themselves operate. But if you’re curious, why not give it a try and let us know?

  • What exactly is prime and why would I want it?

    • Free shipping on your purchases, mainly.

    • +1

      https://www.amazon.com.au/prime

like @ihavecentsnotsense said, most people use it for free shipping (great for those sub $10 items)
and also Amazon video (not as good as Netflix, but has some decent shows & movies)

  • +6

    Anything wrong with this strategy

    Pay monthly with one card

December pay for yearly with another card

    • Why not, you can change card info as many time as you like

I am just wondering if we can pay extra years for the membership.

    • +1

It's only a wrong strategy if you only have one Amex ;) thanks for the tip!

      • What's the strategy if you have multiple? Are you going to buy multiple Prime memberships?

        • Whoops replied to myself instead of you. See below.

      • +8

Use one Amex for the monthly subscription until December, then a second card for the yearly subscription (to get the full 50% off).

        • But that requires 2 AMex?

        • +1

@theguyrules: uh yeah.. That was the point of my original comment.

        • do they have to be different Amazon accounts?

If not, why can't that be done with one card?

        • +2

          @lostn:
You only need one Amazon account.

If not, why can't that be done with one card?

Offer is limited to maximum of $30 credit per Card

        • @sTon3r: lol my bad, read it as 'your strategy for only having one card'.

        • great thinking 99!

    • +2

Thats my plan, set reminders for the 14th of December for this thread and the 50% Amazon Prime thread. Happy Days!!!! :D

      • +1

        Why the 14th?

Are we going to have to be careful that we currently don't have a month paid up so that when we change to a year the fee gets taken before the 18th? I've assume going from monthly to yearly won't bill me until the last month runs up.

        • I can confirm that at least if you are currently on the free trial, switching from monthly to annually does not bill you immediately but rather changes the amount to be billed on the next renewal date. I think it's reasonable to assume that it will operate the same way if you have paid for your current month, but hopefully someone else can confirm.

      • What 50% Amazon Prime thread??

    • Anything wrong with this strategy

      Pay monthly with one card

December pay for yearly with another card

I think it's only one transaction per card, so if you pay monthly, you'll only receive $2.50 cashback for the first month.

      No, I'm wrong! Smart thinking.

    • Anything wrong with this strategy

same strategy most will be using.
Amex & Amazon will be "Hmm this wasn't a success, hardly anyone who claimed the offer has taken it up"
      …..then Dec 17…."WTF?"

      • And a year later everyone has canceled?

  • I believe we also get prime movies and music with prime membership which is not an option with ebay plus

    • +1

      Not music in AU

      • That’s bad, In India amazon is offering all this with prime membership

        • it does pretty much elsewhere too. I'm guessing they seperated it as it's expensive & thus lets them keep the Prime price lower (it's $au160/yr in the US, $au108 in the UK). And they've missed the boat for music streaming in Oz, Spotify, Google & Apple have that cornered.

        • @supabrudda: and also the app looks and feels crappy on the ui front

      • I just registered and it clearly states Prime Music is included.

        " Prime Music
Get instant access to over two million songs ad-free and on-demand, for up to 40 hours per month. "

So it includes Shipping, Video, Music, Twitch (games) and Reading.

EDIT: Uggghh sorry, I just saw how old these posts are. Offer is still valid though and just signed up.

        • It's not Music Unlimited. Like Kindle Reading (not Unlimited), the Prime Music is a cut-rate version of the full thing (Music Unlimited) with only 40 hours and a drastically reduced catalogue.

    • The selection of movies is very limited.

  • registered with Amex QF card

so… Prime free for 1 month.. then the discounted deal for a few months…. and then register it for a year for $30 after that in December ??

given the UTTERLY POOR blu ray selection - and more expensive UK and US limited selection- I'll have to monitor what stuff they have.

We're only doing this because of the Turnbull Tax.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/385490

Amazon AU Prime (inc FREE 2 Day Shipping) for $4.99/Mo until 31/01/2019 ($6.99 Thereafter) or $59/Year + FREE 30 Day Trial

    • what you've described is Amazon's fault actually. they've decided to limit the availability of stock in the AU store. As for the price, we're always going to be charged more then the US store (that goes for pretty much all things, as the US has economies of scale, much larger popiulation density and it's cheaper to do business) , but we should be similar to the UK store (or cheaper as they have a 20% gst).

    • +4

Considering that many US deals were limited anyway - Wouldnt ship to Oz, this isnt as bad as you make it out.

      BTW Its NOT Turnbull Tax

      From ABC website

The Coalition and Labor have agreed to a plan to apply the GST to imported products worth less than $1,000 from July 1, 2018.

  • don't think there is a way to prepay more than 1 year at a time. Sad

    • nope, people in the US were spewing when they announced the 20% increase, as they weren't able to extend their yearly membership before the price rise.

  • +2

    Available for Essential Card too

  • Thanks OP, got it on my primary and supp explorer, cheap year and a half!

  • How does amazon prime tv work? As in can you get apps for media players/ smart tvs / android boxes etc? Or is it mainly for phone usage?

    • +2

Pretty much same as most other streaming services, a la Netflix, except for whatever reason they don't support Chromecast from their mobile apps.

      • +2

Probably because Amazon have Alexa and Fire Stick and don't want to support their competitor Google's products of Google Home and Chromecast.

      • …oh, and Xbox One - that's what I'm using at the moment.

    • +1

Android/iPhone/iPad apps, as well as browser. Support for other devices vary eg some smart TVs may have a suitable app. My old Apple TV supports it, although it does reboot itself every now and then.

  • Thanks OP. Registered with my Westpac altitude AMEX

  • +2

I'm still on the Prime Trial period, how do I make full annual payment, can't see the option anywhere?

Update: Nevermind, all you need is manually register your AMEX from link posted by forumninja above, then edit your Prime payment and change it to your Amex card, by going here Your Account > Manage Your Prime Membership, once your trial period end, money will be taken out of your AMEX and then you will receive your cash back.

    • Would you not let your trial go close to lapsing and then change it?

      • Oh wait, so you can make it choose annual membership once trial is over?

  • I have a similar question as kml22, if I am already enrolled for Prime and still in trial period, am I still eligible for this offer as long as I pay monthly or annual membership on Amex card?

    • Yes, make sure you manually register your card first (link posted by forumninja above), then edit your membership payment to use AMEX, after the trial period, money will be taken out of your AMEX card, and then you will receive your cash back.

  • For those tossing up if it is 'worth it' or not.

I'll be honest, Prime Video alone is worth around $5-8 a month. The free shipping adds even better value. Get this asap!

Note, I'll be keeping the membership going monthly $4.99 until November using a Mastercard debit, then switch to annual using the Amex card. That way you maximise savings, won't risk doing it in December.

    • +5

A reminder to CBA customers, you will need to use the offer before November, after which time all AMEX services are being discontinued. 😭

    • What's Prime video? Can I stream Full HD and 4K movies like Netflix with the subscription?

      • Yes, when it's available

    • People say it's worse than Netflix but How does Amazon prime video compare with Stan? Are there many newer movies available?

      • Gonna answer my own question after signing for free trial. It's rubbish. Not worth even $1 a month. For people considering Amazon prime, just consider merit of that alone. Don't even need to take Amazon video into account. Selection is pitiful.

      • Do they do geoblocking?
Can I watch Amazon Prime US with Getflix?

If this is the case then we compare Amazon Prime US vs Netflix AU.
        Right?

        • No you can't just use geo-blocking to access the US catalog in this case. You would need a US-based payment method and would need to set your country as US, which you can't do in Amazon.com.au.

  • might be cheap enough to consider prime now ;)

    • I'm not entirely sure it will be even worth $30 to me, but at $2.50 a month, I'll give it a go.

      • You don't even need to give it a go at $2.50 if it's only for a month. Just take a free trial.

  • can you watch prime videos on game consoles for AU ?

    • Uh huh, there's a Prime Video app on both PS4 & XBox One

  • Thanks mate.

  • Nice!

  • +1

wow, such terrible contents in prime videos

  • Thanks

  • Only payments for Amazon Prime monthly or annual memberships are eligible for the offer. All other payments at Amazon.com.au are ineligible.

I wonder how this will be achieved.

e.g. I bought something from amazon today and in the amex app it has associated this offer with that transaction (perhaps the logic in the app is less sophisticated than the logic in their cashback processing but here's hoping)

    • Probably a separate merchant account. Maybe Amazon prime is paid to parent company or subsidiary. Au site might be another merchant account.

      • +1

        This.

I bought 2 items yesterday, and one was billed to "Amazon" and the other "Amazon Marketplace" - neither triggered the 50% cashback for Prime. It wouldn't be too far a stretch to imagine that memberships are billed to another biller. Otherwise, there's a small possibility that it goes by amount? But that'd be a very weird way of doing it.

        • Membership goes to "Amazon Prime" as merchant for your membership fees as opposed to just "Amazon" or "Amazon Marketplace" for items.

  • My prime membership will renew tomorrow, will see how it goes.

  • +3

My Membership renewal is today (I opt in for the annual subscription), and straight away I got an email from AMEX about the 50% cashback verification below)

Get 50% credit, up to $30 back
Thank you for using Amex Offers with your Card ending in xxxxx at AMAZON PRIME.

If your transaction meets the offer terms, your credit should appear on your statement within 5 business days (however it can take up to 90 days from the offer end date).

    • +1

I got credited $29.50 on my AMEX account for my Prime memberships annual payment.

  • -1

So basically max spend $60 to get $30 back.

Best to do this while you trial Prime with no sub.

Plenty of time yo wait for good deals til Dec

  • +1

So max is $30 per card is this right? If i do monthly now till DEC then do yearly still $30 max?

  • $29.50 on my Commonwealth AMEX within a day or two. Worked perfectly on my 1 year subscription I canceled but then re-enabled just before it expired. Thanks OP!

  • Can't buy yearly now??
