If Tightarse used lubricant he wouldn't be tight.

    WD-40 isn't a lubricant.

      • Lubricating ingredients loosen rusted parts & drive out moisture

It's a lube, but it's not to be used for equipment that requires lubrication, since WD40 is a lube, but also a lube remover.

Yup WD40 will provide a little lubrication but it is carried in a solvent that will also wash out any existing grease. The oil in the WD40 doesn't last and you'll end up with a dryer joint than when you started.

WD40 was developed to prevent rust in the aerospace industry. I wouldn't classify it as a lubricant, but rather as a penetrating oil and water-displacing spray. WD40 themselves sell proper lubricant products such as WD40 lithium grease and WD40 chain lube. Use those instead for lubrication.

potplanty is technically correct. It has temporary lubricating properties, but it's not really a lube. People often think it is, and use it to stop something squeaking, and then wonder why it starts again soon afterwards. But what they should have done is use wd40 to clean it out, and then add a real lasting lubricant.

      • potplanty is technically correct. It has temporary lubricating properties

Your second sentence contradicts the first. :)

WD40 is a lubricant, it just isn't a long-lasting lubricant. There's no rule that says a fluid is a lubricant only if it lasts x number of days.

Water can be a lubricant too. ;)

    • WD-40 isn't a lubricant

It is, it contains an oil that lubricates.

Coupled with a roll of duct tape and a paper clip, I can try saving the world

    • …you wont get anywhere without some cable ties as well.

  • Anyone recommend a lube for a squeaky chair? gotta use a spray but not wanting to use WD40.

  • ALdi has a Lithium lubricant in stock - anyone tried that?

  • Jeepers JCB are stooping to low levels.

  • Can I use this lubricant to lessen the noise when opening/closing the garage door?

    • If you look at previous comments they discuss how this isnt a lubricant for such uses. Instead try lithium grease or silicon spray.
