  • How much is the scotch for?

    • +5

Damn, I'm a little sad that a lot of good scotch is going to be bought and then likely… just… set aside, by people wanting headphones.

Though maybe it'll also introduce a lot of new people to scotch.

      • -3

put scotch aside is not a crime, mix with cola isn't either or is it?

        • +1

………………….. (I didn't neg you, but very sorely tempted.)

      • -3

        Good scotch? Where?

        • Hey! It is decent scotch, even the reviews agree (though I'm mostly basing off personal taste).

A huge 95 points from Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2013, along with the title of Single Malt of the Year (10yo & Under)

        • @HighAndDry:

Single Malt of the Year (10yo & Under)

So it's one of the better young and cheap ones.

        • @OnlinePred: But also scored 95. I don't really go by scores and that's not "huge" imo, but certainly decent. I mean it's $60 - you could do a lot worse.

        • @HighAndDry: Defs. Although that's $60 you could put towards a really nice one right?

        • +1

@OnlinePred: That's also true. I guess it's not really for anyone who already knows their scotch, but would make a good gateway scotch I reckon.

        • @OnlinePred:

Yeah nah, i don't buy into that Single Malt of the year for 10yo & under. Octomore is like 5yo and it's like in a different league(though it's 3 times as expensive). I put this bottle in the same bucket as Glenfiddich 12, though i rate it better than the Aberlour 12

  • +4

May just end up with the whiskey if all headphones given out already. Not a bad deal if you like the whiskey!!

  • +38

This has got to be one of the stranger promotions I've seen.

But hey a deal is a deal.

    • +2

Sounds like a take on the Wine & Sonos (speakers) deals such as https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/385274

Spend $80 on Wine and Get Sonos One for $149 ($150 off RRP)

Though wine and listening to music through wireless speakers at home does seem to make more sense than scotch and headphones, but conceptually still [alcohol] + [music].

  • +1

their really trying to get rid of those headphones…

    • +57

      Are they're?

    • +1

Pretty sure they are a big flop in Australia due to pricing.

      • +1

Got mine on sale at OW. Love them.

        • I got mine through Amazon, def not worth Australian prices. Worst headphones I've owned though, great battery life and maybe price is all is got for it.

  • +12

Scotch sounds better than having to signup for newspapers

    • +2

Far better. And cheaper. Feel bad for the ones that tried to save money and now have a news corp signup and spent far more money…. and they don't even have a whiskey to drown their sorrows…

    • +7

      Less harmful even.

  • +1

Woaha, that's a good deal if you're after a pair of Bluetooth noise cancelling headphones! Not to sure how good the actual headphones are though, maybe somebody who has got one can enlighten us.

    • +1

They are great value for $100. I wouldn't spend much more on them.

  • +5

I won a pair of these on a recent competition from Cellarbrations and Glen Grant, should arrive this week. Research at the time said these don't go much lower than $250, so getting for around $160 is a good deal.

    • They regularly get to $129 USD on Amazon, $99 USD for non NC 4.40

      • $129 is around $170 AUD at the moment so through this deal, you're actually saving money and score a free bottle of whiskey?

        • +2

Yep! As long as you actually are after THESE headphones. Otherwise if you are just OZB you will be wasting $100 and possibly wasting another $56 if you don't drink the whiskey. Just important to keep in mind, these are budget headphones, and not comparable to most premium headsets, even like the QCs

  • +1

    headphones RRP $329

    OP username checks out.

  • +2

I can't speak for the headphones. But I like my whisky. This is one of the better ones ~$50 IMO.

    • It is! And now people are going to see it as just a way to get a discount on headphones. I'm hoping more than a few will actually try it and appreciate it.

Open offer to buy it off anyone who doesn't want it (unopened) by the way - $30 or so fair?

      • Couldn't people just return the whisky if they don't want it?

        • +1

Pretty sure that'd be against the T&Cs. Whether they'd send you the headphones within the refund window, or if they'll check, I've no idea.

        • The terms don't seem to expressly address this and they may not be able to check if you manage to keep the original receipt, but it's not really fair on them. Anyway, it's decent whisky and you don't have to overpay for it to get the deal.

  • Thats a good deal, is this in-store only? I'm assuming from the T&C's it is:
All participating BWS stores where the POS is displayed from 18/07/18 and closes at 11.59pm (AEST) on 14/08/2018 or when a maximum of 500 claims have been awarded, whichever is first to occur (“Claim Period”).

Latest choice review didn't rate them. They got 3rd last out of 36 models tested.
    Overall Score - 43%
    Good points
    • Foldable
    Bad points
    • Poor active noise cancelling
    • Poor durability
    • Poor listening quality
    • Poor overall score

Look after them while drinking the scotch!

Interesting to note that the Sony WH-1000XM2 got top spot with 90% score and the Bose QC25 6th spot 78%, SennheiserPXC 550 7th spot 77%, QC35 11th spot 71%?!

    • for people treat Choice as Bible, they'd believe everything. I'll take a grain of salt, always.

    • If you want a decent review on a pair/this pair of headphones, then you need to check out rtings.com. They have amazing reviews that are comprehensive and valid.

      • +3

I bought them after reading this review, and they are the worst headphones I have ever owned. Not once did they talk about how terrible the controls andUI are, or how terrible the tone beeps are when you turn up and down the volume, even the voice blaring in your ears when you turn it on sometimes, theres also no real way of knowing if they are on quickly. On/Off process is terrible. Sound quality is fantastic when loud, terrible when quiet. They are far bigger than other headphones like QC sony MX etc.

        • good little summary - i 'scored' a pair through the NewsCorp deal (sign up for a year get the headphones) - anyhow never had NC before and was expecting amazing drown out of external sound - but these just maybe like cut out some of the external noise - still hear 'plane' noise etc. - I agree re the fiddly UI - esp. the NC toggle - for $100 sure - and I don't want to turn off any deal interest - but if you are looking for amzing NC these ain't it - sound quality is good though - BT connects good.

Looks like I'm buying another bottle of scotch this evening…

  • Daily telegraph has a deal where you if subscribe to a years subscription, free headphones.

    • +4

Between a newspaper sub and a bottle of whiskey, what's more appealing? The latter, of course.

      • It's why I didn't post it as a bargain.

    • +4

I'd rather subscribe to this bottle of whiskey and listen to the tales that she has to tell.

  • "THE GLEN GRANT SENNHEISER PROMOTION IS NOW CLOSED"

    Anyone else seeing that?

    • I think that is for some other promotion "VISIT THE WEBSITE ON THE 20TH JULY TO FIND OUT IF YOU HAVE WON."

      • Is it really considering "winning" if you have to pay $100 for it?

  • +1

Bought it for click and collect, called the shop when it was fulfilled and asked the dude for the barcode. He gave it to me over the phone and I filled in the form.
Acknowledgement email received at 12:39 PM. I like my chances!

EDIT: I'll find out if I'm one of the lucky 500 within five business days.

    • -1

If you paid the $100 when inputting the code, you are getting the headphones.

      • A few of us are still waiting on this step…

Once validated you will receive an email with a promotion code

      • Didn't see a step to add payment, put through the claim 2 hours ago. Let's see how it goes.

    • For those asking - the barcode ends in 0297.

I've received what appears to be a coupon code, but it's not working on the website. Have called Sennheiser to follow up.

Rollin down the street, smokin indo, sippin on gin and juice

  • FYI. Amazon reviews the headphones at 3.9/5. Not bad.

  • damn! thats cheap! i have the headphones and they are great!

    • How good is the noise canceling? Do you have a QC35 or XM2 to compare it to?

      • These are budget headphones, they don't compare.

        • Funny how these budget headphones come with a decent case, but your HD598/600/650 series comes with nothing, not even a cloth pouch.

        • @lostn: It isn't a hard case, and I wouldn't judge premium quality headphones by the case that's included.

The 4.3 and 4.4 sound better than the 4.5, but they are technically all the same drivers/internals/plastics etc. The 4.4 adds BT, the 4.5 adds NC. It's the same budget design and sound of the 4.3 for $70USD.

        • @OnlinePred: I don't need a hard case.

If the material is not thin cloth, and it has a zipper, that's decent in my book.

I'm not judging the quality of a product by the case it comes with. But when something cheap includes it, it stands to reason you would expect something more expensive to also include it. I think you misunderstood me. I wasn't disputing your claim that these are budget headphones. They obviously are at this price. Nor was I saying that the HD500/600 series is not premium. You read too much into that sentence.

I was merely pointing out it's odd how something more expensive doesn't include them. They should. Or these shouldn't.

        • @lostn: yea I think it's a nice marketing thing. If they say they include a case, they can make the budget ones sound premium. I bought a hard case off eBay for these and it goes really well!

  • Bought the scotch and submitted the form, hopefully I'm one of the first 500.

Bought online but need the barcode

    Can anyone help please

    • Message the seller?

      • -1

They wouldn't give it to me

        • +3

          Massage the seller?

        • Wait, it does say:

          from a participating BWS store

          So it's not BWS wide.

        • @DoubleUKayG: That might depend on what kind of endings he prefers.

    • PM'd

  • Apparently many of the Melb CBD stores sold out (according to the one near me).
    Might be a popular one.
FYI, didn't seem to like uploading a PDF scan of the receipt, had to convert to jpeg.
    Good luck all.
Worst case just have a nice drink :)

  • This could work out against BWS and Sennheisser complaints wise if they're still accepting claims despite reaching the 500 number.

    • +1

That's how these draws work, happens all the time right? They say in the fine print that it's only the first 500. So anyone is taking the risk if their only goal is the headphones. If you don't need NC, you can get the same headphones without NC for $99USD on amazon. I wouldn't recommend the 4.40 or 4.50, but they are there.

      • +1

It's not even in fine print - it's smack bang in the middle of the page, in around size 14 font.

      • Yeah well fair enough but they should stop the page from accepting more than 500 claims! Can't be that hard to keep a counter?

        • Assuming this is because it's sales/marketing, they want you to keep the bottle rather than returning it.

        • @OnlinePred: Of course it's just a revenue and $$$ game… and I'm sure BWS will allow returns as well if people do want a refund. Just not sure how well it will go with Fair Trading if complaints are raised.

        • @aurotaro: What will they complain about?

    • I don't think they'll reach 500 that quickly.

The sonos promotion has 4000 redemptions over 2 months and they haven't reached it yet, with 2 weeks to go.

  • I've got a unique competition entry code in my e-mail from BWS…. but that doesn't work on the Sennheisser AU link. Does it work for anyone else?

    • Same here, I called Sennheiser and they are following it up.

      • Cheers … let us know what they say.

      • Same here as well, I'd be annoyed if I missed out on being the first 500…

    • +1

Nah, and clicking the promotion image in the email above that code took me to some Woodstock cola competition promotion instead (which required a unique code).

From comments above it sounds like the promo code comes in a separate email after filling out the form… I haven't got mine yet though (filled it out around 1.30pm EST).

      • @MT I think you're right about the Woodstock thing.

    • To Clarify, the CODE is not the UNIQUE code, it's the last four numbers of the barcode on the bottle which is 0297

      Worked for me earlier today

      • The code is 2979 which is the last 4 digits of the barcode 080432402979.

        Not 0297 like you said.

    • DUPLICATE

  • -7

Hi all, if any one is getting the whisky but not wanting the headphone, could you kindly share the receipt with me.

thank you for your help in advance.

  • I've been looking for a decent set of NC headphones, and I'm always up for some good scotch so this is a pretty perfect deal all round. Never heard of Glen Grant though - anyone know if it's any good?

    • Based on my hangover today, it's pretty good.
