      Easily the best tomatoes around!

They are bit sweet for my taste, my vote goes to Mutti tomatoes - I love them.

      • My vote goes to Woolworths tomatoes. They are cheap =P

        • +1

I don't think annalisa add sugar to their products, so it's just the sweetness of the tomatoes.

Mutti are good too, just more expensive. Coles ORGANIC branded ones are also good. I find the majority of the others have a strong metallic taste/smell,or can be too watery.

        • +2

          aussie too

      • +1

I'm avoiding Mutti until they've cleaned up their supply chain: https://www.business-humanrights.org/en/italy-prosecutor-nam…

    • +3

Nup, La Gina and Mutti are the two best brands.

Why do these companies add the tomato juice on top?

    • +4

If you stand on a tomato you may note it is half juice.

  • -7

Please buy Aussie tomatoes, not this Italian stuff.

    • I'm kind of with you but would like justification on why it costs ~5 times more and is worse quality.

      • +1

Aldi has Aussie ones 99 cents for the 99% tomatoes that aren’t half a can of juice

      • Because of EU subsidies, the 'tomato mountain' gets to be dumped in countries like Australia helped byour lack of political fortitude in taking Italy to the International Trade Organisation for breaching. They have taken Italy to the ITO twice successfully, but the punitive tariffs that Australia is allowed to impose is far outweighed by huge legal costs and the time to take action. Also, quite often Australia may suspend procedings during trade negotiations (for politial reasons). Our cost of tomato production for equivalent peoduct may appear higher and that is because our farmers do not receive equivaelnt EU subsidies to produce, and our regulatory regime for hrealth, safety (insecticides etc.) are of a higher standard, and also possibly less corrupt than Italy has. My ex-wife is Italian and she used to say that Italian tinned tomatoes, olive oil, wines, etc. are cheaper to purchase in Australia than it would be for Italians to purchase the same products in Italy, particularly since the currency of exchange moved from Lira to Euros in the early 2000s.

The Aussie stuff is all canned by SPC, owned by Coca Cola Amatil (regardless of what brand is on the label, they're the only company to can tomatoes locally).

And they've been pushing this as a political claim for years, that Italian tomatoes are evil, rather than trying to compete on price, and they've convinced a lot of people. But there's not a whole lot of proof to it - and the only one who benefits by paying the high price for Aussie tomatoes is SPC. Not the usually underpaid migrant workers picking them, and definitely not us.

There are better products to protect than our canned tomato market.

    Nothing beats fresh chopped tomatoes.

    • +2

In a salad yes but in pasta and most cooking the tin is better.

      • Unless you're doing a quick 15 minute sauce, couldn't agree more! Fresh tomatoes are often under ripe so they keep shape at the cost of flavour. The tinned ones are generally super ripe and plenty tasty! Don't get me wrong if you pop down to a farmers market or similar and get "sauce tomatoes" you will get something fantastic too!

      • I prefer fresh when doing my neopolitana source, with Roma tomatoes. If I’m adding some into a stew I use a can. I agree market tomatoes do seem to be better.

      • Interesting, didn't know that

      • What do you like better for pasta sauce, the peeled tomatoes or the diced ones? Or the flavoured ones like garlic, basil etc?

        • +1

Whole peeled. If you cook it for long enough, not only does the tomato sauce taste better, but the whole tomatoes break down just fine.

Edit: Amazing what a refresh page does. It's disappeared :)

      • …in the matrix. Should have checked with the Oracle first.

        • Can the Oracle give me next Saturday's tattslotto numbers?

        • Unfortunately the architect did provide her with this coding…

  • -5

Should I neg? There are way better products made in Australia they always cost more… Dodgy supermarkets!

    • +2

Better is highly subjective. Ozbargain is about the price ratio relative to the RRP.

I buy Australian produce but this is still a very decent price for some tom-toms!

  • I just bought the lentils (which I have for years) and when I drained the can the lentils were stuck to the bottom like a mushy brick.

    • Lentils are something I buy dry, rinse and cook. They are quick compared to other legumes. That can certainly doesn’t sound right.

      • ill throw a lental to your head

  • Does anyone know if the cans are BPA coated? Also, the tomatoes are acidic and could this cause leaching?

    • It says BPA free on the tin pictured

    • +1

Yes, the cans I bought at Woolworths also had the yellow ribbon indicating it came with free BPA.

  • -4

Stay away from tinned food if possible especially acidic tomatoes

  • beans are the most Ozbargain source of proteins

    • I thought Macca's nuggets were

Are these Chinese tomatoes canned in Italy or actually Italian?

    • Italian tomatoes are cheap, they regularly over produce and dump product.

Woolworths home brand is from italy

I've been making a Napoli sauce using this recipe https://www.bestrecipes.com.au/recipe/matt-s-napoli-sauce-L8…

with the whole peeled Annalisa tomatoes.

Unbelievable sauce with some good pasta.

    • +1

Thanks mate I'll give it a try!

  • The whole peeled ones are almost always better tasting. I guess for the diced one's some of the rotting fruit is selectively cut in.

    Interesting reading:
All Italian tomato exporters to Australia slapped with anti-dumping measures:
    https://www.smh.com.au/business/consumer-affairs/all-italian…

  • All comes down to the content of tomatoes! Some like these are 60% whereas some are 98%. So depends on what works for your money.

    • +1

      Exactly

      I buy tomatoes at Aldi

They have the Italian for about 60cents a can which are 60%

And the Aussie 98% for about 99 cents

  • Excellent price. We buy these frequently so it's time to stock up again.
