If nothing else, that box is amazing.

    • -3

better to leave it brand new sealed, could be worth $1000 in 3 years' time

      • Lets see after 3 years mate

      • +1

The controller battery lasts about 3 weeks. I think NIB will suffer the same fate as PSP batteries.

        • I heard if the batteries die in the Wii U Gamepad, you can't bypass it with the AC cord, so you basically have a dead Gamepad. So beware if the console is over 3 years old and especially unopened. I am now worrying for my own stored console as well too lol. So yeah, it's quite possible you may have to replace the battery…

      • +1

You must have missed the $25 wii deals

  • Do all games these days come out on both Wii U and Switch? Or is the Wii U becoming obsolete. I really want a Nintendo console, but have no interest at all in the handheld element of the switch. Does it make sense to go with Wii U?

    • +19

the Wii U is obsolete. it's good to have as it basically runs every older nintendo game.

      • -7

the Wii U is obsolete. it's good to have as it basically runs every older nintendo game.

        You just contradicted yourself

        • +12

it was specifically referring to @frukoz's question about whether games still come out on the wii u. in terms of gaming consoles - it's obsolete.

as is the old wii - obsolete but still good to have: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/392723

obsolete doesn't make it automatically not good to have (unless you want new games to come out for it)

        • +11

          Thats not how contradicting works

        • +5

Obsolete and still useful are not contradictions. Obsolete can mean, no longer produced, and the Wii U is no longer produced.

    • It's end of life console, Nintendo doesn't produce it anymore

If your not interested in the current catalog don't bother

    • +4

There's been no first party titles since Breath of the Wild in March 2017, and that's mostly because it was in development for 4 years. It's also still better on the Switch (apparently drops down to 20fps at points on the Wii U).

There's only been 1 game released in Australia for the Wii U at all this year - the Australian market mostly gets overlooked so you'll be importing a lot of games.

      • +3

        Or get jailbreak

      • But you can softmod the wii u, and use it to dump botw, then play it in 4k @ 60fps in Cemu on PC.

      • Played it on wii u never had any drops that bad.

        • +1

It 100% drops that bad, and that was post patch. Before it was even worse to the point where traveling through Kakariko meant 15fps for the next few minutes.

It doesn't even hold 30fps stable. I put in over 120 hours into BoTW on the Wii U. Great game, but if I replay it, it will be using CEMU and neither the Wii U or Switch.

If you want some laughs, try playing Assassins Creed Black Flag on the Wii U. The whole game is a slideshow, I have no idea what they were thinking releasing a game that can't crack 20fps stable.

        • Don't think I'll ever replay it no way am I doing the shines ever again aha. Oh wow if I ever see it for real cheap I'll give it a try

    • I have the Wii U since it got released, only got it to play mario kart. Found every other game on it to be kinda boring. Got Breath of the Wild on Wii U, hated it since I found it quite slow and laggy. Ended up grabbing a Nintendo switch to play Breath of the Wild. Even on the switch when docked, I found Breath of the Wild to have stupid FPS drops too.
Would not recommend Wii U at all, unless there is a game that you really want to play.

      • There were some really solid games on it. But they're gradually being ported to the Switch (and some to the 3DS, such as Yoshi's Wooly World).

Mario 3D World is really the only top-tier game that's left that I'd say is indispensable, but isn't available on other platforms. Expect a Switch release eventually.

As for frame drops in Zelda, after the latest patches, they're really limited to the Korok forest and occasional spots where there's lots of lightning. I don't see them anywhere else.

        • tokyo mirage sessions? WW:HD and TP:HD? Xenoblade Chronicles x?

        • @mrend55:

JRPGs are a bit of a niche genre. Those who like them love them, but they don't exactly have mass appeal. I personally can't stand them.

The Zelda remakes are very nice, though.

      • +1

Wii U: Every previous gen Nintendo game for free.
Switch: Every current gen Nintendo game for free.

        • Am I missing something with this comment…?

        • @cjb: nope. Buy Nintendo console, get everything for free!

        • @D3m3ntia:
As in you've hacked your switch? Any dangers of it being locked out in the future?

        • @cjb: Most certainly! But it's still the only thing to do when you buy one.

      • +2

I play Breath of Wild PC edition. Enhanced graphics and no frame drops.

        • You must have Intel CPU, nVidia GPU and plenty of RAM. My CEMU experience, is passable on AMD GPU.

        • @FabMan: I lock 45fps with a Ryzen and an AMD GPU @ 2k.

        • @idonotknowwhy:
Interesting, I'm on ultra-wide (3440x1440) with 8700k and Vega 56 and my FPS are not stable. Most of the time its 45+fps, but when combat initiates I get slow downs. I've done the tweaks suggested by the online folk.

There you are with the not recommended CPU and GPU and doing better.

I'm looking forward to their Vulkan support and implementation that is planned.

        • +2

@FabMan: Vega and 3440x1440 here as well.

A recent build gave me a huge performance increase, and it took me a while to get these settings. Here they are in case it helps.

          I use these GFX packs:

          • Epigramx's static 45fps pack (not fps++ which gives me 43 - 60 fps depending on where I am)
          • Clarity
          • 3440x1440

This is my game profile: https://pastebin.com/vZ99arqX

And in the menus I have:

          Debug -> MM Timer Accuracy -> 1ms
CPU -> Affinity -> (I picked every even number CPU (CPU0,2,4,etc). Might be different for Intel.

          In experimental, only have:
          Full Sync At GX2DrawDone()
          and
          Use Separable Shaders

Also I'm on Cemu 1.12.2.c (not 1.12.d which gave me stuttering issues).

VLK will be a while away, but the dev is already moving in that direction. The next release will rewrite the texture cache to make it VLK compatible.

        • @idonotknowwhy: Really good of you to share, I'll give those settings a crack, already looking forward to downgrade from 1.12d as I jumped to that from a much lower version and FPS improve but stuttering increased.

    • -2

The small handful of games worth playing on the now obsolete Wii U have been ported to the Switch.
Only reason to get this system would be for the dual screen features, which a lot of games sadly didn't implement.

    • +2

Well worth modding if you’re a Nintendo freak. If you live in Adelaide I’ll do it for you.

  • +1

Pickup only. Looks like there are less than 20 nationwide for the xenoblades one.

    Tempted…

  • +6

Extremely limited stock but price is good. I'd pose this to you if you were thinking about buying one - this, or $179 to put towards a switch?

    • -1

the cheapest the switch has EVER been was $315 from AMAZON with prime. Save for a switch. New games coming out even with ports its better overall and your future. Not your wallet though

      • -1

It was a bit cheaper with woolworths egift to buy 15% off Catch and stack with unidays discount, while also buying 1 month of club catch for free shipping (cheaper than paying the shipping). They also dropped the price by about $10 a week later and gave store credit for the price difference if you asked.

While it had more steps, it took over a week for stock to run out and then they restocked straight away, whereas I heard the more expensive Amazon deal sold out quickly.

Also, 15% off Catch cards is coming up in a bit over a week at Auspost iirc, and you can stack with the unidays 10% so adding on shipping it should be about $316 if they don't raise the price before then.

    • if you only had two choices
then switch is better option since it will have future games
and might get ports of wii u games

      • The wii u ports are fair too expensive

        • what you mean?

Nintendo has a habit of porting some games over from older consoles
and the wii u was a failure for them so why not port some popular games over to the switch

Porting a popular game over is a quicker way to make money
than creating new game completely from scratch

just look at the ps3 classic/popular games that are ported to ps4

        • You could just get a wii u and buy the games for like $20 each while on the switch they are around $60 fair too overpriced for ports. The PS4 port stuff was silly why would i want ports if i can get them cheaper on PS3 aha, I'm okay with ports from a few gens ago like the PS2 classics on PS4 or wind waker hd for wii u but porting a game from last gen just seems kinda greedy unless it is well priced which Switch ports are not.

        • +1
    • +2

Wii u for sure, more games on it currently plus the games are cheaper unless there is a few switch games already out you want to play I would go with the wii u.

    • +2

EB have regular edition WiiU preowned for like $130.

  • +3

Hopefully people will not receive preowned.

  • -4

Waste of money buying the premium edition console. Buy the basic one and soft mod it.

  • Only available in NSW and Mildura stores..

  • 3 Mario Karts in QLD, Yeppoon, Airlie Beach, Innisfail.

  • +2

why this deal here? There is no stock available?

    • If anyone's interested that was a Splatoon one at Liverpool Eb last Sunday. Might be gone now that this deals been posted.

  • +4

Would've been cooler if the console and controller were Xenoblade themed. As it stands, it's just a Wii U in a Xenoblade box with the game.

    • +1

The only limited edition themed Wii U console was the Zelda WindWaker one. Only the GamePad was different and I don't think it was sold in Australia.
      It looked great though.

  • 2 left pickups in QLD…

  • Live in Ballarat, 5 hour drive to Mildura :(

    • +6

      Have you left yet?

  • Shame this console never lasted. One of its doownfalls was that that if you lost or broke the gamepad controller you were basically stuffed, unless you could find a second hand one. As they were never sold separately.

    • There was plans to have two GamePads connect to the console. At one stage EB Games had them for preorder. The weak sales put an end to that. But even so, it’s not like the GamePads were unreliable or fragile.

      • +1

EB games put any rumour on presale.

  • Save your money get the switch or 3DS XL for cheaper games

    • Switch has like 3 or 4 games aha, 3ds is good but

      • +5

…but what? You didn't finish your sentence.

        • +1

I think it's an Aussie thing. A good bogan friend of mine always says "but" at the end of his sentences.

        • +2

"but" means "though." in this context.

        • +1

          @Tuftsdude:

A German friend mentioned that to me too, so I find that interesting, but

        • yeah guess I picked that up somewhere aha sorry idontknowwhy is right.

  • +3

Did anyone else get one about 4 years ago for the same price with Mario Kart? I can't find the deal link anymore, but back then Target or Kmart had a basic bundle with Skylanders for $178, they ran out of the bundle so replaced it with the Premium bundle with Mario Kart for the same price.

I recall reading it on Ozbargain which was why I managed to get one myself. Good to see that the value of our investment hasn't dropped for the lucky ones like me, but yeah, curious to see if anyone noted that deal link so I can confirm I'm not just misremembering (and because I can't be bothered looking for the receipt).

    • I did. Target.

    • I did K-Mart

    • +3
      • Nice sleuthing.

There must have been others though. I'm sure I got my basic 8GB Wii U Skylanders + MK8 bundle through Big W (or possibly Target) for that price, and I revoked my +1 on the Kmart deal all those years ago probably because I couldn't find any stock.

FWIW, I played like 2 hours of MK8 when I got it and then didn't touch it for 3 years until Homebrew came along around the time BOtW released.

        Now it's just a drunken smash/mk8 machine.

        • I cant remember the last time i played the Wii U. Unless its a Mario or Donkey Kong game i dont really care about it.

  • +4

Have Wii U and Switch, Wii U gets used way more than the Switch does… If i didn't already have 2 Wii U consoles i'd buy this one just for the BOX !

  • +1

Wii u is the best. Hack it and it plays everything. Just make sure you own the games first.

    • +4

Yup, the real bargain is modding the WiiU and the internal Wii to play your totally legal backups.

      • Given you can now play your legally owned Wii u and Wii games off the same external hard drive is a god send.

    • Switch does sort of lol.

  • +1
  • I saw a Xenoblade as well as a Splatoon Wii U bundle at EB Chadstone last Friday for that price. Was tempted to get the Xenoblade one, I'm sure they've been sold by now.

  • +1

Still can't believe I got a Wii U for $175 brand new from Dick Smith's back in 2013. Officially, the console never even sniffed that price point and Nintendo basically left it to die. Probably time to hack it to pieces… or maybe I'll keep in legit and sell for a high price later? Hmmm.

    • I bought one in 2013 with NintendoLand for $199 from Target.
Sold it last year for $250; which partially funded my purchase of a Switch for $300 (including Zelda) from a FIFO worker who had never even opened the box.

    • Hack now, revert later. Sell like it's fresh out the box.

  • +3

To OP, please add this bundle as well:
    https://ebgames.com.au/wii-u-213202-Nintendo-Wii-U-Mario-Kar…

I think they posted this bundle just few hours back, it is available only for delivery. I have just ordered it.

    • Ordered one and after paying the item and getting my order confirmation email it is now out of stock - hopefully it doesn't get cancelled

  • It's on ebay now with Splatoon and Mario Kart
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Nintendo-Wii-U-Mario-Kart-Splato…

  • Where can I get genuine controllers at a good price? Thanks

  • Got a brand new boxed Wii U Mario kart 8 edition… anyone want to swap for a Nintendo Switch?
