  • Looks like a great deal anyone know how good these guys are?

  • Server not found

Firefox can't find the server at www.rackservers.com.au.

    • Check the address for typing errors such as
        ww.example.com instead of
        www.example.com

    • If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
        connection.

    • If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

  • yeah same here. Not so good if you cant find the parent company website :p

  • +1

not sure i want to host something where they cant even host their own site!

Looks like you really do get what you pay for.

    Fair call….neg taken back

    • -1

No problem. Sorry about that, it was my fault for posting a little early.

    • but your neg is still there.

  • Yea, sorry. I posted the deal just before the guys were doing maintainence. Should be good now. Sorry about that.

  • On the configuration screen it say extra Gb for $5, but on the payment screen it say $60. You should fix that mate, look like you jack up the price for extra Gb. Anyway good deal but I will decide over the weekend if I should try it out.

    • Hi puchipucca,

Thanks for your comment. That price is per billing cycle, so when you choose annually, it changes from $5 / month to $60 / year.

I will ask the guys to make it more clear though, thanks.

  • Is there any performance difference bet/n the Linux/Windows servers? If I sign up for one of them to start with, is it possible to switch to the other at some later stage without any penalty? Thx

    • Hi tekken,

Depends what you need, the servers are quite fast, but generally if you need ASP, we ask that you go on Windows, otherwise Linux.

You can switch between them later if you're not happy (no penalty).

      • thx for the quick reply. couple more questions if you don't mind :

        • do you offer SSH? If so, how much?
        • on your website, it states "Add-on Domains cPanel only". Does that mean Plesk does not support
          add-on domain at all?

        thx.

        • Hi tekken,

          No problem.

We do not offer SSH on shared hosting.
Plesk 9 (and lower) didn't support add-on domains, but now with Plesk 10, they support it and we include add-on domains with Plesk the same as our cPanel servers. All our new Plesk servers are v.10 though and come with add-on domains.

      • Sorry, one more question : if I do switch, do I lose the recurring 85%-off discount on that plan? ie. is it regarded as a total plan change?

  • Just signed up - I need a new host that has MySQL DB's

Anyway - I put in the discount code, it said it was 85% discount, but got charged in full to my credit card. Waiting for a response.

I'm currently using a free web host and they're really slow (get waht you pay for i guess) anyway hopefully these guys are alright.

    • Hi thisispete,

Did you put in the discount code on a annual or biennial cycle?

      • all sorted now :)

    • update: all fixed by support.

my site already backed up and re-uploaded to rackservers.

all working already. VERY fast hosting so far!

  • Just a few questions before i sign up, as the email side is very important to me:
1)What type of email accounts are included? are they just web-based or can they be access through programs like MS Outlook?

    2) Do the email accounts have a limit? and do they have a file size limit?

    3) Are Email Redirects possible to be set up and if so how many can be created? Is a "catch-all" address possible?

    Cheers

    • +1

      Hi DoctorDubb,

      1) POP/IMAP, you can use webmail, outlook, etc
      2) You set the limit
      3) You can create redirects, unlimited and you can have a catch-all

      Thanks :)

  • Thanks for the quick response - signed up ~$38 for 2 years - great stuff :)

  • im trying to purchase, but it doesnt seem like the discount is working, trying it on the advanced webhosting for two years.

also, does this apply to the VPS?

  • oooohhh its only on the business haha ok didnt read it that well :P

    • Yea, look out for a different deal for the larger plans in a couple of weeks :)

  • Wonder if rack servers has been around for 2 years before anyone committs to 2 years hosting plan.

  • Trying to sign up to a Power Package with free hosting of a new .com.au domain name. "My".com.au domain name is indicated as available on Netregistry and other domain hosting sites but "not available" through Rack Servers. What is the problem??

    • I asked the support team the same question. Apparently they limit the number of searches per day ><
To get the domain through them, I think you have to do it through their online live support team.

      • Strange they do this when you are in the first step of buying a package. Likely to put most people off proceeding. Possibly me too. Their .com search still works with the pay for option.

        • Yea, it's per day, but also per hour, ausregistry give a certain amount of searches per hour and obviously we've gone over that limit. Please bear with us as we've had tonnes of orders/searches.

    Is this a better deal?

    http://www.crazydomains.com.au/web_hosting/index.html

For $4.50/month for 12 months, you get:
    · 25 GB Web Space
    · Unlimited Data Transfer
    · Unlimited Email Accounts
    · Unlimited Email Forwards
    · Crazy Cloud Hosting
    · PHP, MySQL, Frontpage
    · Optional ASP, .NET, Access
    · Easy Control Panel
    · Web Site Stats
    · FTP File Access
    · Spam & Virus Protection
    · Hosted in Australia
    · NO Hidden Fees
    · FREE Fantastico Apps
    · FREE Setup
    · FREE 24/7 Support

So more webspace, and unlimited data transfer. Very similar to their 'Power' plan.

    Can people provide their opinions?

I can't decide, because I'm new to all these sort of website stuff.

    • I wouldn't touch Crazy Domains….

    • HAHA goodluck with those guys. Come and tell us your sob story in a few weeks!

Search on whirlpool, you'll find plenty of info on CRAZYDOMAINS.

  • Hey guys any chance of doing the Advanced or Power level plans at 85% off highly interested if so

    • We may do once this offer has expired :)

      • Hope so will sign up for a few lol

  • Damn, always get burnt jumping the gun.
Picked up a plan with http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/38877 & they have been great so far.
Have had a couple of issues with some php stuff I was trying to run & they were really quick with response.
A friend is with Crazy Domains & has been ok, but you really need to read around a bit (ie. whirlpool)
They are obviously after the value business. This plan's initial offering is much cheaper.
So if you need a bigger plan kiryn, then
"Rack Servers 1 hour 35 min ago
look out for a different deal for the larger plans in a couple of weeks :)'

  • Hi There

    Business Plan
With your addon domains, is it 20 email addresses per domain or 20 email addresses in total ?
    Thx Peter

    • 20 total.

  • This is shared hosting right?

    • That is right.

  • Do you support catchall email addresses ? Not just standard aliases, but a wildcard catchall to get everything ?

    • They don't. Just spoke to the online support guy. Great support I must say! :)

      • We do on cPanel, not on Plesk :)

  • Don't know why you would limit the number of email accounts? They are limited by diskspace & transfer quota anyway.

    • If you need more than 20 email accounts, just contact us.

  • A few questions:

    1. What state are the servers based? NSW/VIC/other?
    2. How do you select Linux or Windows when ordering?

    Great deal!

    • Hi ranoa,

      1. QLD - East Brisbane
      2. When you click on the order button, you'll be able to choose the OS.
  • Hi, would this be good for my own personal website?

Is it as simple as uploading my html files via software like filezilla ?

    • Hi Bliind,

Yes it's fine for a personal website; once you get your settings you can just upload your site.

With Filezilla, you'll need to ensure it doesn't open too many connections (there is a setting somewhere) as we've had clients who use that and the program opens up > 1500 connections and they get blocked by the firewall. We have a knowledgebase article on it (http://www.rackservers.com.au/secure/knowledgebase/6/Using-F…).

  • Hi

Could this code oz85 be used for an existing reseller account and/or a new reseller account?

    thanks,

    Bob

    • Hi Bob,

This code is just for Business hosting on an annual or biennial billing cycle. We have a 50% off deal for other plans (including reseller) on new accounts. That code is 50off.

      • thanks for the quick respond.

wonder what would be the main difference between advanced web hosting and reseller hosting?

Or what is the main difference between account/domain and add-on domains?

I manage about 20 domains for 3~4 customers and i do most of the job for them. do i really need a reseller account?

        Many thanks,

        Bob

        • The reseller plans can be used if you intend to give your clients their own cPanel/Plesk accounts to log in to. If you don't intend to give separate accounts, then you can just do a shared hosting with a bunch of add-on domains.

  • is the price going to go back to the original state after 2 years?

    • Hi binadms,

This is a recurring discount, so no.

      • Ah that's good…I'm waiting for the power package 85% discount then as it suits me better, but anyway, do you have a reseller package for sale?

      • what happen if you want to upgrade your account, from business to advanced hosting or from advance to power hosting? would this discount carry forward?

        • Hi Bob,

Good question. You'd need to pay the difference between the two packages (on the before discount price), but you wouldn't continue to get the discount after you upgraded as it's just for the business plan.

  • I'm not terribly familiar with the low-level networking stuff so bear with me here…

How do you link a domain to a host without an IP address, as the business plan lacks said IP address? Also would this make it more difficult to change domain names in the future?

    • Hi toomuchdogfur,

It comes with an IP, but it's a shared IP. The IP that you can purchase as an add-on is a dedicated IP.

    • Thanks for that! Eh, I might hold on for the higher plans because I think the IP address will make my life easier. :)

  • not able to post a reply when it gets to the 3rd level on any ozbargain discussion…

Thanks for your answers, Rack Servers.

One of the application I used is called WebERP, it needs InnoDB+ ENGINE for MySQL; In addition the magic_quotes_gpc setting must also be set to off.

    Are these achievable?

Do you know any of your customers running webERP?

    Thanks and regards,

    Bob

    • Hi Bob,

      No problem.

You will be better off speaking to someone on chat who can help you with any questions you may have.

  • +1

Sounds like a good deal for Australian-based hosting, but the lack of SSH access is a major shortcoming. I can see it's one less thing for the host to worry about, but can make it very frustrating for the customer who wants to do even basic things (e.g. maintaining a small forum).

    • Agreed. Even jailed SSH is better than nothing.

    • Install something like PHP Shell and you're off.
It hasn't got anywhere near the capabilities of a full SSH environment but if all you want to do is conveniently run commands on the server, this will do the trick.

  • +3

seems a real bargain, so I've signed up. Can't imagine how they can afford to do it so cheap!

    • Promotion to get their brand name out there most likely, appears they've only been operating for about 8 months.

  • +4

I'm giving a plus for the fact the rep has been very very helpful answering all the questions.

    • +2

I’m giving a plus for the fact that it is a good deal!

    • +1

I totally agree (abt the helpful rep)!

  • Perfect TIMING! I was just trying to decide between Panthur and Rackservers, looks like I've found my hosts! Wooohooooo thank you RackServers!

    • +3

      No problem :)

  • no one care about how many user they gonna through into each server?

    • We provisioned 3 new servers just before we did the deal so no problem with overcrowding.

  • +1

Spectacular value! Very impressed with the speed so far. Was easy to get an ASP.NET MVC 3 app up and going after a quick google on the extra dll's required in the bin directory.

The customer service is also brilliant. They have bent over backwards to help. Initially .NET 4 wasn't working but within minutes of raising a query the problem was fixed.

I have no idea how they can offer this for approx. $20 for a whole years .NET hosting.

    • +2

We feel customer service is the most important part. Thanks for your comments.

    • Agree with the above, and don't forget to set "Copy local" = True in the MVC references to make it easy

  • Hi Rack Servers, I had a question above (buried in a much older post)? it was regarding switching bet/n Windows/Linux servers after signing onto a plan.

    ………………………….
tekken 11 hours 56 min ago

Sorry, one more question : if I do switch, do I lose the recurring 85%-off discount on that plan? ie. is it regarded as a total plan change?
    ………………………….

    Thx

    • Hi tekken,

You can switch if you want after signing up, but you'll be given a fresh blank install. The discount will continue as long as you stay on a business plan.

  • Hi Rack Servers,

I have not yet got a domain name i want to use. (Everything i choose is taken, but i know i will eventually find something that i like&is not taken) - But to sign up it requires that i enter a domain name..
How can i get past this to sign up for the deal now?
    Cheers!

    • Hi GreenHornet,

Choose the 3rd option after you click order which is to keep the domain somewhere else. You'll need to let us know though as we won't be able to process the order until you have a proper domain, otherwise when you get your domain, we'll need to delete your account and re-create.

      • Just to clarify…

If we do not currently have a domain name and purchase using the 3rd option, we need to delete and re-create the account when we have a proper domain name. Will we keep the discount?

        • Ideally, you should have a domain already or just purchase one at the same time when you sign up. If you don't, then later we'll need to delete and re-create. So whatever you've put in your hosting account will be lost. But you will keep the price after the re-creation.

Send us an email if you need further clarification :)

  • About time i bought myself some proper hosting been using the free sppace that comes with my internet plan for way too long.

    • Does it usually take a while to receive a confirmation email? Havent got one yet.

      • We're up with the orders, send us an email with your domain name and I'll check for you.

  • Hey Rackservers/

Question: Can I pay annually up front?

    • Hi zonbie,

Yes, the deal is only available on an annual or biennial payment :)

      • Roger-that. Thank-you.

  • +1

If i don't sign up for extra storage now(using the oz85), am i able to do so next year and still get the 85% off the storage charges as well? or will the re-occurring charge only be applied to the base Business Account?
Thanks for promptly answering all these questions!
It's good to see a seller monitoring so actively (Its certainly a good thing to see for a hosting provider)

    • +1

      Hi GreenHornet,

The 85% off deal is for whatever you order using that code. You can't upgrade/downgrade using a code.

No problems on the questions :)

  • Does anyone know which version of Ruby on Rails is supported?

    • Hi CaptHowdy,

RoR is 1.8.7 on cPanel, as it's the only one they support.

  • Just signed up.

Nick, on their 1300 number was VERY knowledgeable and helpful Thank-you Nick.

Looking forward to a long and fruitful relationship with RackServers.

  • Hi Rack servers, is it silverlight compatible?

  • It looks like www.rackservers.com.au is not working at the moment? Anyone else able to see it? Alertra.com can't spot check it either…

    • Yea, the RS server gets rebooted every morning. Only takes 2 minutes.

      • ok, I can see it now
