Why when there's cheaper options, TVs have built in freeview, smart tvs has the channel apps, can get a fetch mighty, Vodafone TV, mibox etc for hell of alot cheaper. Sat is dying

      Why when there's cheaper options

So the Rep can sell their surplus stock.

I guess it's for where you have poor terrestrial reception (so your TV's built-in Freeview and the tuners in the Fetch Mighty are no use) so you need VAST. Just to clarify, my FetchTV box (not the Mighty, older twin-tuner) doesn't stream the free-to-air channels and only uses the TV tuners for those channels so it wouldn't help if you have poor TV reception. And if you are in an area with poor TV reception and poor internet then streaming (iview, 7plus etc) isn't an option either.

    • If you live in a remote area with poor or no communication reception, how does this internet thing work? Full duplex smoke signals?

Respect and salute to anyone recording 2 and watching a 3rd. On Australian TV.

Obviously you are not married and have kids…

When the sat TV was being introduced to the world, consumers were brainwashed and misled with you can watch anything and without advertising.
Then what happened, demand increased so advertising kicked in and people are still happy to be cheated and give their money away for nothing.

        • What?

        • @Diji1: Rupert

        • But at least you can skip the ads on recordings.

@Major Mess: So, just like free-to-air but not free.

    • thats a lot of sportsbet and insurance commercials

VAST provides digital television to viewers in remote areas of Australia who are unable to receive digital TV through their normal TV antenna due to local interference, terrain or distance from the transmitter in their area.

    • Also a big hit with the Grey Nomads.
Probably better bandwidth as well, for other sat services beyond Vast?

Same supplier has it on eBay: $284.05 delivered with PENNY5 - plus bonus free HDMI cable.

      Well spotted.

    • I think there are better equipped units around for cheaper as well. Just have to organise your own Vast card, which I suspect you still have to do?

      Edit:
      https://www.myvast.com.au/access

"Access to the service is controlled by the smart card which is supplied with the satellite set top box. To access VAST you will need to register your details including your address, reception location and smart card number.

To apply for ABC and SBS services only, register here:

To check if you are eligible, and to register for VAST commercial (CH7,9,10) services, click here"

Unfortunately the card is mated to the box these days, so unless you want to spend $600 on a CA module that comes with the smartcard mated, you have to buy one of the few "vast certified" boxes. None of them are very good. If you just want ABC then it is free to air off the foxtel satellite.

I for one won't pay that much for something our city friends get for free, so I just use an old usb sat tuner to get ABC Kids free to air for the little ones, and haven't watched TV myself for a couple of years - don't miss it one bit.

        • Yep I got that reading the site. Sucks. Very corrupt behaviour.

    • its $295 on ebay so direct from the website is cheaper. With Penny5 you get discount off which Ebay subsidise themselves

      • Even with the latest price changes, eBay comes out on top.

        Website: $299
Price is $289, coupon doesn't work ("The coupon code "SATKING" is not valid.") Plus there's "Shipping (Flat Rate - Fixed) $10.00"
Even if the coupon issue is fixed, it still will come to $289 unless free shipping is provided.

        eBay: $280.25 delivered
The price has dropped to $295, PENNY5 takes $14.75 off, and there's free delivery.

There's nothing wrong with having a slightly higher/lower price on your website, but splitting hairs doesn't really make it a bargain. (A bargain, for example, might look like $231.20 with free delivery ;)

So was an error with the coupon code we just fixed it . Penny5 only works for 3 transactions we have already used our ones up. I guess you could create another ebay account but that is a pain in the backside for sum

The profit margin on these boxes is pretty small I will take to management see if we can do better :)

Cheaper on eBay as mentioned above by Thrift, neg.

  • Does this mean I could watch footy being shown in another state that wasn’t being shown in wa?

    • Probably not as vast only carries Southern Cross Media, Imparja TV, WIN and GWN which are poor cousin versions of 7,9 and 10 they don't have separate channels for each state anymore.

    • Maybe a vpn and an internet stream would work?

  • Can we use this as a normal satellite receiver ?
We have the proper card already our one is just really cheap

    • Can't be used for foxtel.

      • Nah it’s for NHK japanese satellite…
I guess it can be then
