But this is USED. Not so "insane" deal.

  • +11

Crappy deal. Def not as bargain.

It's really weird I have to keep saying this:

Second hand things are not as good as new things. They are worth less. They are not bargains when they cost more than the last brand new deal.

      • +8

He didn't say worthless. He said worth less in value if you're going to trade it or sell it.

Why not pay another 30$ and get a new one? Gamesmen on EBay with 5% off code.

        • -5

          Sorry for offering an alternative.
Also I know he didn't say its worthless.
          It was a hyperbole..

      • +2

I'm pretty sure they're just saying it's not a deal. I mean - you can probably find new Switches on Gumtree for less. And if this price for a Used console is higher than previous deals for New consoles… it's definitely not a deal.

      • +9

        Refurbished doesn't mean second hand

Hate to break it to you bud…..

      • Sweet summer child…

    • +1

Hypothetically someones gf used to hang around with her ex so she is worthless?

      • +11

No, but I'd rather have her twin sister who hasn't been used.

        • topkek

        • +1

ahh so women are objects to be owned hey?

        • -1

@gizmomelb: Someone else compared gfs to a Nintendo Switch first. Go waste your outrage on them?

        • @HighAndDry: I think he was joking…

        • -1

          @Originality:
Yeah that guy dont have sense of humor

        • @ManWithTwoCats: no sense of humour when it comes to discrimination and so called harmless sexist or racist fun.

      • I mean, is she's on sale for $318….?

        • If she is, would you get her? I mean, you know

  • +6

INSANE Deal for a refurb yeah nah.

    • +1

how about refurb deal for the insane :D

  • +2

For people looking for a Switch who are in a tight budget, I'd say this is a great deal. Why are people so quick to criticize… Takes 5 seconds to do vs 5 minutes to actually post a bargain and share it with people.

    • +7

Why have a neg button if it's not going to be used? It's nothing person to the OP, I just don't think it's a good deal. Who knows what quality the console is in.

      • People can make their own minds up as to what's of value. $318 is the cheapest price (from a retailer) for a Switch right now. The next cheapest price is $355 for a brand new one.

For some families, $40 is the difference between getting a Switch for Christmas, and getting a Switch AND a game to play on it. For some people that'll be worth having a refurbished model.

For you, it's not a deal. (For me either; I was one of the lucky 400 who got one for $315 brand new from the Ebay Plus sale, and even if I didn't have one I'd rather pay the $40 extra for a brand new one).

For some people, this will have been worth posting and sharing.

  • +6

Not a bargain for a used console.

  • +1

All we need is a crap deal on a refurbished PS4 and EB has completed the trifecta!

New with 15% of giftcards coming up.

  • Look, there's still people this would be of use to, but those people aren't generally after a bargain or just straight don't care.

10 years ago my mate's junkie mom bought him a PS2 for a hundred at Cashies when Kmart were selling them new for 80, some people just don't know or don't care, but yeah, generally these people don't frequent OzB.

    • Yep….that explains a lot of eBay prices on used stuff.

But seriously, I've bought "refurbished" from EBGames before. They didn't do anything to it - I'd say the PS3 I bought was as dusty and dirty and used as it was when the person who traded it handed it over. All they did was stick it into a box and onsell. I had to take a controller straight back for replacement because it didn't work. But I guess, there's the rub…if you buy secondhand from the average Joe, you won't have any form of warranty - EBG at least offers this much.

      Still…I don't feel that it's a great deal. Just kinda….normal.

Makes the full price pretty rubbish. People will still buy them, but maybe OzBargainers should be telling them not to wherever possible.

  • +1

    old one means hackable? hmmm

    • +1

New ones are too. all of them are. That's not a USP at the moment.

      • Nintendo have released new units with the same hardware but new boot code flashed. Immune to exploits, for now at least…

      • Not all of them are.
SX Pro is the primary tool used for hacking currently.
While it can do all OS's, it can't hack (yet) some new ones that have had hardware patches done to stop them working.
But it is only a matter of time.

@uccoffee older (under os 3.0.1) is the easiest to hack but also has the most games that can't be played due to OS requirements.

Right now, you're highly likely to buy any switch and have it hackable using sx pro.

I bought one from this deal on top of the two I already had.

1 For a chance at older OS

2 Its the cheapest from a retailer even if it is refurbished, not new. It still comes with 12 months warranty.

3 So I can hack my other two and use this one if its not old os to game regularly on or end up gifting to my nephew.

        • There will be a time when all new games downloaded and whatnot that will require you to have the latest firmware because it will use some security library in order for it to work properly. Nintendo will most likely enforce this on all software to require a minimum version in order to work.

It is a cat and mouse game. As much as Apple Jail breaking is as well.

        • Wait, so has anyone gotten a switch from a store in Australia (EB games, JB HI FI, etc) that is the non-exploitable model yet?

  • +5

You lot are terrified of buying something second hand. Money saved is money earned, if someone is happy to own a refurb then they're paying less than the other deals you're comparing this to thus this is worth posting.

    • +8

I buy secondhand as much as the next guy….depending on which next guy you're talking about.

But my last experience…PS3 from EBGames. Can't remember what I paid, but seemed like a better deal than this (ie…I saved more than $50 off the best new price).

      Used PS3 from EBGames…$X…

…+ 20 mins cleaning it up
…+ $10 for rubber feet that were missing which EB wouldn't sort out (I'm OCD about this stuff)
…+ an hour of my time taking it back in for EB to check out the missing bits, and replace the dodgy controller

Look…we're talking about EBGames specifically, so I'm proposing that they just don't add enough value to justify the price. It's not like they really "refurbish" these things (not in my experience). If you buy a refurb'd iPad from Apple - they've run diagnostics on it, and pulled it apart and put a new battery and case on it. People still hate on Apple refurbs…but at least they actually have them looked over and fixed as necessary - I seriously doubt that EBG gives more than a cursory look over.

Honestly…I buy heaps of secondhand stuff…but I like it to be a bargain. I'd argue that this isn't a bargain…but kudos for the OP for bringing it up anyway. I'm after one of these and it's nice to see what options there are, but for mine, I'll just keep walking past this one.

      • That sounds really unfortunately Banj0! Sorry to hear you had that happen.
My local eb is really nice and friendly so I have never had issues with returning pre-owned stuff.

I've bought plenty of consoles before (I think I'm nearly at 40k spent at ebgames total, most of it at the two local stores) and only had 1 or 2 issues that they sorted out.

I know what its like to have a stores reputation ruined by 1 or 2 shitty experiences, but hopefully over time they can do better and regain your trust :)

        • +1

you have spent close to 40K at Ebgames ??? Hand back your Ozbargain license.

        • +1

Don't get me wrong…I like the staff there. They're friendly and helpful…and they were when I had problems with that particular PS3 (replaced the controller no questions, but wouldn't sort the little rubber feet).

It's just that if it were a true refurb program - I shouldn't have had to take my time to do that. The item would have already been in tip-top condition (marks and whatnot…sure, but clean and fully functioning). From that experience, I don't think that the EBG "refurb" program is all that good…unless they've changed the way they do it, they probably should drop the "refurbished" bit, and just call them "used".

      • +2

Refurbs & secondhand are not the same. Typically a refurb is a unit that may have developed a fault early in it's life, been sent back to manufacturer & fixed. Obviously this can't be sold as new, but as a refurb. All accessories, etc are included & should appear to be brand new. A full warranty is also supplied.

Secondhand is just that, you don't really know what you're getting. Stuff missing, mismatched parts, etc

If EB are palming off secondhand goods as refurbs, then they really need to sort their shit out & pronto.

        • +1

They are not the same, but are still not mutually exclusive. A second hand Switch may have developed a fault half way through the warranty, and the manufacturer can still repair, clean and pass it on to be re-sold. This would mean it's a refurbished second hand device.

But you are correct, in that the warranty and testing provided by the manufacturer provides confidence in the product.

        • If EB are palming off secondhand goods as refurbs, then they really need to sort their shit out & pronto.

Well, it's really OP that messed up the title. The eBay listing clearly says:

Nintendo Switch Console (Refurbished by EB Games) - Nintendo Switch - PREOWNED

So basically "Used". EB just takes it in, maybe wipes it off, resets it, and voila.

    • Completely besides the point. You want to save money, go on eBay and you can find a used Switch for less tan $300. This is only a good price compared to buying new - and guess what, this isn't new.

    • Also, the title is a little misleading. This isn't a "refurbished unit" in any real sense of the word. The eBay listing says:

Nintendo Switch Console (Refurbished by EB Games) - Nintendo Switch - PREOWNED

  • +1

you did need to be insane to buy this…

  • +2

not a good deal for a refurbished product! the last deal for new one beats this hands down!

  • how much do eb buy these for?

    • eb buys things for 30-60% of what they resell it for usually.

E.g. my spare new 3dsxl traded in for 100. They resell for 179.

      So I'd assume 250ish.

  • no deal

  • Seems like it's been edited to 398 now. The code PRELOVED20 is also unable to be used: "This code can't be applied to your order."

  • +1

A refurb should be sold for under $300 imo

  • Refurbished = broken/faulty that has now been repaired.
Not a deal at this price. Should be under $300.

  • Not a deal for me as it $323.35 shipped and from 20th Aug onwards, you can get a brand new Switch for ~$330.70 shipped (~$7 more) from Catch (provided they don't increase their prices).

    • Sorry?! $330.70 from Catch? Please explain!

      • Step 1: Get 10% Unidays coupons from fellow OZB members or anyone you know with Unidays (Bringing price down to $358.20
Step 2: Buy 5 (15% OFF) discounted $50 Catch cards from AusPost between 20th - 26th Aug 2018 ($212.50 out of pocket for you)
        Step 3: Pay Catch $108.2 + $10 shipping (So $212.50 + Step 3 = $330.70)

If you have Club Catch, then it's free shipping, making it $320.70)

        • Oh nice…thanks…I'll keep an eye out.

I ditched my Club Catch membership, since I didn't see me making enough purchased to get value moving ahead. …maybe this though.

        • +1

Thought I'd add a step 2a: Before buying the five $50, check if your local AusPost stock any $100 just in case. Apparently fewer locations are ordering $100 Catch cards but if you're lucky to get some you can potentially be paying only $305.70 (3x $100 gc + 1x $50 gc for $297.5 + $8.20 out of pocket) with Club Catch free shipping.

  • Personally I think it's alright. The Amazon deal the other day was clearly superior, but how often does Prime day come along and what was the low water mark a month ago? Higher than this thats for sure (people were getting excited by arond $370 - $380 new).

Not a bonkers great deal or anything, but I don't think it's bad. Just make sure to check the consoles condition and swap or return if not satisfied.

  • +1

Factory refurbished? For sure. This is seller refurbished, and I've seen their refurbished consoles. Not pretty.

    • Why +?

      • I couldn't remove it. I thought it was factory refurbed… until I clicked the link.

        • You can click on "Votes" along the top, under the title where it says:

          view | revisions | votes

And in that list should be your vote, where you can click on the "stop sign looking thing" to revoke your vote. You can do that with comments as well, fyi.

@HighAndDry: Well I'll be. Never knew I could do that! Thanks!

EDIT: And you can see who +'d your comment. Again, this is something I never knew you could do.
