  • Is it mew rego's only? Or canwe transfer one in?

    • You can transfer a domain name in also and renew it using the code. Please beware, renewals of Australian domains is only permitted within 90 days of expiry.

  • ID Protection not for .au domains?

    • That’s pretty stock standard as .au is usually associated with a business.

    • .AU namespace policy does not permit ID protection on .AU domain names.

Although this isn’t too much of a concern as very little information is shown. On a standard whois search only the Registrant/Entity data is shown (including ABN/ACN/Trademark/etc) along with the name of the person who is the registrant and technical contacts. No phone number or postal address details are shown on any whois search. The only time an email address is shown on a .AU domain name whois is when the search is conducted via the AusRegistry website and this is protected by a captcha.

      • protected by a captcha.

        Nice protection? :p

        • That is straight from Ausregistry they seem to think that's enough protection however, they don't reveal contact numbers or addresses as such.

        via the AusRegistry website

You should probably know that AusRegistry no longer runs the registry for .au.

        • Yes, but they still run the Australian whois database as Afflias looks after the registry side of things.

        • @rippahost: No they do not. The whole shebang is now run by Afilias. AusRegistry involvement now is absolutely zero.

      • Actually as I mentioned on whirlpool you sort of can hide some of the information.

        Original reply: http://whrl.pl/RfckFF

Private registration is against auDA policy and registrars are forbidden from offering such a service on any .au domain names. However, as the registrant you're allowed to use title based roles your company's name and ABN will always have to stay or if you use another eligibility type that information will have to stay.

But you can use something like,

Registrant Contact Name: Domain Name Administrator
        Registrant Contact Email: [email protected]

Tech Contact Name: Domain Name Administrator
        Tech Contact Email: [email protected]

Some of the largest organisations like banks, Apple and others do exactly this have a look for yourself.

Regular price for registrations/renewals is $10.50 per year at Zuver (subsidiary of VentraIP)

Paying 5 years upfront for a saving of $2.50 (50c per year) isn't enough to entice me to transfer over, especially when after the 5 years I'd be paying 50c more per year.

i love VentraIP…best after sales service i've ever dealt with!

    • You also cannot renew the domain name and less it is with in the last 90 days of the registration period.

  • Hi kamoi,

You are more then welcome to transfer the domain in, just for the purpose of renewal and transfer out straight after it's done, as there no restrictions or costs associated with transfers.

  • I joined and cannot Lock ".au" domain names
    Is that usual?
Can I unjoin if it is not?

    • Hi Trinity,

Automated Domain lock through our dashboard is only a feature available on global domains names.

To lock an Australian Domain Name please see the following:

auLOCKDOWN is used to prevent any updates to a domain name without the express authorisation of the registrant.

The activation and disabling of auLOCKDOWN is a manual request with the .au registry. We'll send an email to the registrant advising that we've enabled/disabled auLOCKDOWN.

On further assistance how to achieve this please raise a support ticket through the dashboard.

  • Seems that you use Weebly for Website construction but Weebly offers a Free Domain for $5 per month including Drag and drop builder, 500Mb storage, connect your domain and SSL security.
Have I been done over by you - or are you really an OzBargain?

    • Weebly is only an addon available to all customers, the $5 plan you are referring to is their Connect plan and lowest plan available through our system is Starter (which is higher). Weebly is not able to provide you with Australian Domain Name or Hosting based on Australian Servers which does affect SEO of your website. We offer free SSL also and no you have not been "done over by us". Please feel free to raise a support ticket if you require any assistance with the setup of your website.

This is actually more or less the same cost as Zuver on an NPV basis. Assuming that you earn 2.8% on your cash in an ING account and need to renew on day 0, five years of registration at $10.50/year at Zuver will cost you $49.72 in today's terms, compared to $50 at Rippa. If you are able to achieve more than 2.8% (i.e. most at-risk investments, diversified), you are actually paying more with Rippa. The benefit is more pronounced for Rippa because their cost of capital will far exceed 2.8%, and so that you could earn a profit even by paying Zuver $10.50/year for your domains.

edit: and as Kamoi notes, there is a higher annual price after the five years are up, if you forget to switch back to Zuver even once, you are already 22 cents behind.

  • FYI everyone, code expires tomorrow.
