Can anyone comment on quality on this just for movies etc? Have my doubts on a 50" $400 tv.

Pretty sure I've got this or at least a very similar TV from Kogan (KALED49UHDUA) that I've had for like a year maybe more. I use it as PC monitor / TV for a bedroom. When I got it I was expecting it to be an adequate 'second tv' for a bedroom or something, but honestly I've been really really impressed with it; I'd consider putting it in a living room. You miss-out on a lot of the bells and whistles on a 'Smart TV' but nothing a $75 Mi Box can't fix (and will be much better) and a universal remote can't fix.

I actually prefer non-smart TVs. Although some of the "smart" functionality is handy, you often have insufficient control over how it works and the UI is slow and unresponsive.
+1 on the Mi Box/Media PC.

Just be careful about Kogan, if something goes wrong. They are the most-complained about company in NSW, according to NSW Fair Trading:

  • I have a kogan 49" 4K smart tv.. hardly use the smart function as UI is quite laggy. So far very happy with the picture quality or I'm not picky. The only issue is the low quality speakers, anyway fixed by connecting a pair of Edifier bookshelf speakers

    • Do you just connect the Edifier's through the headphone jack and control them with the small speaker remote? Was thinking of doing something similar

      • Yes just through headphone jack

Still have other inputs left at speakers and sometimes connect via Bluetooth from phone for spotify

No HDR. Also one tuner only so you can only record and watch same channel. No record one channel and watch another.

It's a <$400 TV, what did you expect?

This, or a second hand 50" Hisense for the same price?

    • +5

Probably the Hisense if it's a model from the last few years

      • It is. Thanks mate, was thinking the same thing.

        • +1

Unless you want to use it for gaming, some of the Hisense are great as tv's but suck as monitors due to massive input lag.

The old adage is "If you buy cheap you get cheap"

    • +1

I prefer 'Buy Cheap, Pay twice'

      • How about "Buy cheap, pay every two years" (or whenever warranty expires)

      • +1

It's unwise to pay too much, but it's more unwise to pay too little.

When you pay too much you lose a little money, that's all. When you pay too little you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought is incapable of doing the thing you bought it to do.

The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it's well to add something for the risk you take. And if you do that, you will have enough to pay for something better.

There is hardly anything in the world that some men cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and the people who consider price only are this man's lawful prey.

        John Ruskin (1819 ~ 1900)

  • You pay peanut you get monkey, becareful with KOGAN TV

    • +1

People always say stuff like this in Kogan TV deals, but the people who actually own the product generally give positive reviews.

Plus Australia has great consumer protection laws, if "you get monkey" you can just send the monkey back for a full refund.

  • thanks OP, bought one… funny thing is when i checked the SOLD history, all buyer are new users with only 1 feedback… lol… this 15% ebay thing sure does hilarious…
