This might be a silly question, but what would I use a VPS for?
I've tried to google it but the answers are pretty ambiguous and mainly about making VPN's?

No offence, but if you do not know what a vps is for then I don’t suggest you get one as it’s a server which hackers would love to hack and therefore send spam etc.

      • Ahh, i may look into it more then :)
        Thanks for the advisory warning!

      Hi TechSport,

You can use a VPS for a number of things not only VPN's for example but not limited to Web Hosting (provides a dedicated environment to you), Small game hosting, Application Hosting and testing. Think of a VPS like having your own townhouse you can paint the walls and do what you like without affecting other people on the same server. I hope this helps :)

      Regards,

      James.

      • I may try it just to see what I can do with it.
at 50% off and local I probably can't complain too much with what it could do.
        Thanks for the reply :)

Great :) I recommend a VPS is a great starting point to learn, as a dedicated server can cost a fortune. Plus we have buttons so you are able to restart the environment if you break anything.

A better alternative maybe Vultr, Digital Ocean or Linode which are billed by the hour, so can really stretch a $10 account over many months. Also Vultr, Digital Ocean or Linode are on much faster networks, i used a Paris Vultr server and did a speed test and it was downloading at 6Tb/s. Normally a bottleneck is the hardware network card/port but Vultr has some great tech and its not a limitation.

So things you can do is, run an Emby media server, test Linux Distros, setup headless web hosting, Personal Cloud Storage, email serving, "seedbox", PBX, VPN, DNS Server, smart DNS, CRM, ecommerce site.

A great feature with the per hour billed cloud instances is that a short term Magento ecommerce web site can be setup quickly and on much better hardware at a much lower cost, as a very high spec instance is about $1 an hour.

Also check out all the apps https://www.turnkeylinux.org/all some of which i have been running from Vultr instances.

        • @Crownanchor:
Thank you for sharing alternatives, keep in mind that it does come down to what you are hosting and what your target market is.

If you are hosting a business page, e-commerce or any of the above and your target market is Australia, l would still host it with an Australian provider, some of the providers you have listed are overseas which means anyone in Australia browsing to a website hosted on these platforms will bounce around the world in order to get to your website/application in return will provide slow latency and speed.

Another thing to keep in mind is local support, generally, if you host overseas you will be speaking to support agents overseas. If you are spending $1.00 an hour ($720.00/mth) on a very high spec instance and are going to keep it long term this can be expensive as you can pick up a dedicated server for under $150.00/mth without a contract and in Australia which means you will get raw performance instead of sharing.

          I hope this helps :)

  • Incase anybody was wondering… these are KVM based VPS'.

Also Op - The link in the heading for your website in broken.

    • Hi Bob81!

      Thank you for the feedback!

I have also fixed up the link, thank you for letting me know :)

  • Do your gameservers run using the same setup or are they just instances on dedicated servers? Talking specifically about source engine.

    • Hi Mccarthyp64,

Our game servers do run on another setup, which includes a dedicated server running TCAdmin.
