It's that time of the year again where Steganos make their Privacy Suite software free for a limited time.

The webpage is in German but if you go here and enter your email address you'll receive a confirmation email. Untick the box to stop the newsletter signup. In that email is a link that will send you a second email with the license key. You can download the software here.

Full list of features can be found on the product page and should be usable on 5 PCs.

Also just be aware that the Privacy feature that blocks ads and prevents tracking would stop cashback sites from being usable while turned on.

  • Is encrypted storage like prevent ransomware?

    • +13

No it's more to prevent other people from seeing your files or the unlikely chance that your computer is compromised. The safe creates an encrypted file on your PC which means ransomware could still encrypt it. You'd be much safer using the portable safe and having it stored on external media that isn't constantly plugged in.

For actual free protection against ransomware I recommend using RansomFree (alongside a decent AV). It creates dummy bait files and places them in places that ransomware normally encrypts first. Once it detects ransomware it kills the offending process and alerts you. Operating in the same fashion as premium solutions. I've tested it against new September Dharma variants and it has worked every time.

      • you mean ransomware "decrypts" or "encrypts" it?

        • +1

Encrypts it. The safe is just one big massive file stored on the drive. Ransomware itself can still encrypt it.

        • @Clear: i see.

@0031nek: Think of it as a box. If there is no lock on the box anyone can open it up and see what's inside. If you put a lock (Steganos) on the box then people can't see inside without a key. If that box isn't protected then someone could go add their own lock (Ransomware) to the box and you can't get in.

So the ideal way to protect your files is to have offsite backups (e.g. Google Drive/USB HDDs) and a good antivirus product.

  • Link signs you up to the newsletter. Where it sends a confirmation. Yet to see a follow up email with any keys.

    • Sorry I should have said you could untick that. My follow up email took about 10 minutes to arrive. Definitely not in the spam?

      • No, I already checked. Will check again in 30 and update.

  • It's sending me in circles have 3 newsletters coming now.

  • Thanks

  • Ahh I think the site doesn't load correctly on iphone in chrome. Seems to cut the website.

  • Typed in email address, unticked the newsletter. Email arrived in under 1 min. Clicked link in email -> got key in under 1 minute. This was in Chrome on a desktop. Thanks OP!

  • Wouldn't let me get a 'seriennummer' because my e-mail (alias) has the word 'spammer' in it. I set up a Steganos account with that same address without any problem…
