Still cheaper at Anaconda - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/397592

    • +7

This is good for when your bottle is out of date and you need something in date ;)

      • Yep agree - mine was in date by two weeks!

    • +9

Not the same. This is a swap not a refill.

      • +2

oh come on, you end up with a bottle full of gas, does it matter if it's your old bottle or someone elses old bottle?

Bunnings is handier for most, but Anacodna is $5 cheaper if it's not too far way.

        • +12

Massive difference. You can take an old expired bottle and swap it. You cant legally refill it

        • -6

@trev likes bargains: it’s extra if you give out of date bottles and it’s totally different that no body checks.

        • +6

          @haitchb:
          Incorrect.

          Does SWAP'n'GO accept out-of-date bottles?

          Yes!

We accept out of date bottles at no extra charge.

        • -3

@trev likes bargains: I manage a servo we do charge you extra if you give an out of date bottle and get a full in date bottle. As I said above it’s different if anyone checks and yes swap and go does invoice us differently if we give them out of date bottle.

        • @haitchb: What does your servo have to do with this deal? I've never checked the dates to see if they have expired but they have never been checked when returned.

        • -3

          @Brouw3r: lol don’t bother.

        • +2

          @haitchb:
Respectfully, this is not about your servo.

You should show them the Elgas website next time. It clearely states no extra charge for out of date bottles.

        • @trev likes bargains: thanks for that I’ll check, much appreciated!

        • -4

@trev likes bargains: thats a very very very small, insigificant amount of case that you'd ned to do that. So sure you'd goto Bunnings. But for the 99.9999999999999999999999999% people who have a bottle within the 10yr stamp, the Annaconda deal is cheaper if you have one convenient. why would I pay 33% more for essentally the same thing - a full bottle of gas.

        • -1

@supabrudda: I'm on leave today so let's look at some numbers.

Assumption is that each bottle is refilled every 2 months

          Bottle lasts 10 years
@ 6 refills per year, that is a maximum of 60 refills

At any given time, you have 1/60 chance of having an expired bottle. So 1.67% chance of being expired.

For your nominated numbers to stack the bottle must be emptied and refilled more than once per second for about 1000 years

        • @trev likes bargains: don't forget most bottles are 9kg, but swap and gos are 8.5kg, factor that in to your calculations

      • What's the actual difference?

Fill or swap you still own the bottle.

        • +3

Your existing bottle could be out of date or in not so great condition.

    • NSW locations are terrible, but otherwise the price is good.

    • Just a shame that the only one in Sydney is in Penrith lol.
Not worth it to save $4.80.

Also new bottle vs refill :D

    • I don't go through a lot of gas but have to admit hadn't heard of gassbottlerefills.com till today.
Anaconda too far for me but showing BCF refill is $17.49.

I've got a feeling one of my bottles is over 10 years old now though, swap might be the only option anyway.

  • Yup got it thanks op

  • Perfect, no Anaconda near me and I ran out of gas the other night! Thx

  • Last time I checked it was this price. It must have gone up and now come back down again. Regardless, thIs is a god price.

  • When does the deal end?

    • Bunnings don't usually tell you when promotions end. It's likely there's a competitor that has lowered their price

Also I'm not associated, but I can't post any comments without being forced to be associated.

  • how much is the cylinder?

  • +1

    Is this all bunnings?

    • +2

      Yes

      • +1

        Cool just bought. Thanks mate

    • No. I did a swap and go yesterday and was charged $25.90 :(

      • +2

        Yesterday it was $25.90, today it's $19.80.

  • +1

    On ya, Trev. I'm in… Thanks :)

  • Just check the Expiry date, before taking. I exchanged one last year, and went to fill it up last month. BBQ galore wouldn't fill it up because it had expired.

  • The problem is unless you are empty on gas it's not a bargain. If your bottle is more than 20% full, you are paying the equivalent of full retail price.

  • Haven't got a gas tank yet, where's the cheapest to get one so can do these swaps in the future?

  • Does Bunnings swap 4.5kg tanks?

  • +2

Swapngo pump a 9KG to 8.5KG weight regardless.
Local camping store decant till full which could be around 9-9.2KG before the gas comes out the full valve.
So if your paying $20 from the camping store the Bunning 8.5KG equivalent would be about $18.60

  • Great deal. Anaconda is cheaper but it's also additional 20 minutes drive away for me + apparently the Preston VIC store only does refill on weekdays + it's about 10-20 minutes wait for the refill.

    • +2

It's the wait that kills me. I feel that they are forcing me to browse so that I will buy something

    • My 2 nearest Anacondas don't do refills

  • +1

Just be aware Bunning restrict you to 2 bottles only if you are transporting them in a closed vehicle. I use the 8.5kg bottles to run my gas heaters in my home [connected outside] and usually use between 4 and 6 bottles each winter. The first time I took advantage of the Bunning deal to buy my bottles I took down 3 to get exchanged and they didn't want to sell me the third. Luckily I was in my open back truck, but they still wanted to see my truck before they would sell me the third.

    • Yet thousands of LPG vehicles have the LPG fuel-tank behind the rear seat

    • Why not use a 45kg bottle? I would have thought they would be cheaper in the long run and save needing to swap over 5 cylinders a year .

      • Rarely are they cheaper as they get refilled at your house and you pay extra for the service

        • That's right, last time I checked they were $135 each plus rental. I'm in the country, city prices may be better.

      • One of the few things I've come across where you pay more per unit the more you get. Makes sense for me to have multiple small bottles then a 45kg I still have to go to collect from a depot.
Found a 45kg bottle on a kerb side waste day. Thought I could swap it but nope. They still need me to sign up when collecting a full 45kg bottle which makes my extra bottle worthless.

  • Thanks OP .. nice to see the price down, wonder how long for. Anyone else notice Bunnings have gradually been increasing their price since Masters closed..

    • 1 day apparently (see above Stivo's comment)

  • Does anyone know how to check how much I have left?

    • +2

Pour boiling water down the side of it. Wait 1 second. Feel down the side with your finger. When the temperature changes, that is how full it is.

      • at what level should i be expecting to replace it, do you know?

        • +1

There is no right answer. It depends how often you use your BBQ, and how much gas you use each time. I generally push it quite low. Maybe 10% full.

The easiest solution is to own two bottles - and then only refill when it is 100% empty.

        • @mjwills: I’m amazed how very few people own two gas bottles. Then they wonder why they run out of gas, mid-bbq with hungry people to feed!

          Get two gas bottles people!!!!
When the first one runs out, swap it with your spare. Continue cooking….easy.

The most important step where most fail to do is then going to Bunnings or wherever and replacing the now empty bottle, Do this within a day or two or you will forget.

Been doing this for 15 years…maybe closer to 20.
          Never run out of gas…..ever!

  • When you consider that a 8.5kg gas bottle has a 80% fill capacity, leaving 4L for expansion, is only actually 18L of gas, at the service-station that is currently @ $.70cpl so actually cost is $12.60 incs. of fuel excise

    BUT:

BBQ gas would not be subject fuel excise and they would be buying it wholesale for refilling, nice little earner for somebody along the way, maybe $5?

What to have, be discrete, and don't overfill esp. in hot weather * FOR INFORMATION PURPOSE ONLY* really for fork lifts [wink]

If you don;t mind the slow boat from China, cheap as…

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Fit-Gas-Propane-Tank-Adapter-Cam…

AND YES, LPG works fine as a BBQ fuel, you may [or may not] have to drill the BBQ jets a little bigger

  • +2

https://gasbottlerefills.com/ may be useful in finding alternative cheap options. Bunnings is more expensive than many swaps / refills in my area.

  • +1

its been this price at bunnings oxley (QLD) for a few months now, thought it was normal price

    • Not according to price hipster. https://pricehipster.com/product/3xnL6Wd5MZsxW9knZmLK_w~HJ1K…

Was it an in store special?

      • Bunnings Rocklea has been this price every single time I've gone to swap mine over.

So, unless I've managed to fluke it every time, then they're doing this price either permanently or very often.

      • nope no special signs anywhere, its just he price i've paid swapping over bottles over the last few months

  • +6

For people in Brisbane, Bunnings will price match $15.80 @ Tarragindi Fruit Barn

  • -7

Just swapped in ACT. $25.90 each.

    • Which store? Showing as $19.80 for Canberra Airport store

      • It was belco.

    • And you didn’t even dispute it? LOL.

      • Interwebs weren't working properly in store. Couldn't bring up bunnings page and it seemed unreasonable to argue a discount based on discussion on a third party bargain website. Took the hit.

        • +1

Whoa your OzBargain badge will be stripped off by the community

        • @trev likes bargains: apparently! 7 negs for saying it didn't work for me. Tough crowd. :)

        • @U4333439: I think the negs are for not making it work for you. We are passionate about bargains.

If I was in your position, I would have asked that they swap the gas bottle for free. If it scans at a higher price than advertised, then I feel I'm entitled to ask for it for free.

  • Nice!

  • Fok man. I did a swap last saturday.

  • Hmm, Bunnings has taken down the page…

    • It’s back up but at $25.90 does that mean it was a one day special?

      • Yep, it was a one day special then. One of my gas bottles finished last night so I missed out

        • +1

Damn I already had an empty one but thought the deal would last at least a week.
