Sony XAV-AX100 - Carplay and Android Auto Head Unit $377.32 + $7.95 Postage / Free Collect (Was $599) @ SuperCheap Auto eBay

860
PLENTY10

Hey All,

The Sony XAV-AX100 head unit is currently on sale at Supercheap Auto for $419.24 until 16/09/2018. + $9.95 postage.
Cheapest since last deal I can find ($399.20 - 20/12/17)

I've been eyeing it off but it kept showing no stores had stock near me in Vic and it wasn't available for delivery.
Just called Supercheap and was advised there's 200+ units available. So they must have restocked, Pickup still shows me none around me.

I ordered one and my postage was waived, unsure if its because I'm a member or something else, might apply to others.

Also bought my Fascia + Wiring from eBay, this store is participating with the 20% POLLEN Code and seems to have most AERPRO Harness'/Cables and other brand Fascia's/Cables.
I saved $43. https://www.ebay.com.au/usr/brandbeast?_trksid=p2047675.l255…

Save another 10% by buying from their ebay store. Comes down to $377.32 + $7.95 shipping or Free click and collect. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Sony-6-4-Android-Auto-CarPlay-Me…

    • Thanks mate! Even better. When I was looking at it, it didn't show any stock! Forgot to check again haha

  • +9

Buy it from their ebay store and use code PLENTY10 to get it for $378.

EDIT: Damn it, 1 minute too slow

  • +2

Paid about $500 for this a few months ago. Great unit! At this price it's certainly a bargain.

    • +1

Yep, I picked it up for $399 approx 6 months ago. For the price it has been great, haven't missed the CD slot (though we do have some kids CDs that go unused).

Can't remember what reversing camera we got but it works nicely.

There is a software mod to remove warning screen on startup, I haven't done yet but will do shortly.

My wife has an iPhone and I have Android. I'd say Android Auto is better overall, particularly since I have a Google Music subscription. Installed Waze and some other apps and works great.

One point - on my old Samsung S7 the connection was a little problematic and would drop out and need to be physically replugged. My S8 works absolutely fine, and I seemed to find similar reports about s7 stability in various forums.

      • +4

timbo83, update the firmware with the download on Sony.com.au - the newer firmware only shows the warning screen for a couple of seconds, you no longer need to click "OK" to dismiss it.

        https://www.sony.com.au/electronics/support/mobile-cd-player…

        • Oh great, thanks for the heads-up!!!

      • Have you installed it by yourself?

        • I got mine professionally installed. Would have done if only head unit and steering control, but time poor to be mucking around wiring reversing cameras.

        • @timbo83:

          How much was installation?

        • @timbo83: Did you have a head unit in the car before? Are all head unit connections the same?

        • @flaminglemon: Use https://aerpro.com/ to find out what adaptors your car needs. Once you've bought all the right bits, most cars are plug and play - depending on how integrated your current headunit is into the dash though.

    • Does it have digital radio?

      • Don't believe so.

  • Tried purchasing several current catalogue items from Supercheap Auto's eBay store using PLENTY10 code and click and collect. Code worked but order failed. Contacted eBay and they said problem with seller's PayPal account and they don't know when it's going to be fixed. Only way of finding out is to do a new purchase and see whether it fails again or not. Anyone else have same problem?

    • +1

I did the same for multiple stores. Went on the supercheap website directly and found it shows out of stock everywhere bar one place. I think their eBay store isn't updating the out of stock correctly.

      • Thanks, ended up paying the $7.95 postage

        • FYI - I noticed some of the items in my eBay cart had an annotation:
          "Offer applied
          Save with great prices".

          This was before entering PLENTY10!!!

I tested excluding these items from my purchase - and my order for the remaining items was processed normally (including the PLENTY10 discount). I had unsuccessfully tried several times to get an order processed by trying different things e.g. reducing number of items being ordered, deleting items not in stock at my local SCA (per SCA website) even though they were showing as in stock at local SCA on eBay etc.

I ordered the rest on SCA website (with 4.2% Cashrewards) instead of eBay as I couldn't be bothered trying to get eBay to fix the issue as I'd already wasted too much time and they weren't very helpful with this issue when I originally contacted them.

  • So this harness would work for a toyota hiace, replacing the headunit. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Aerpro-Toyota-Hiace-2004-On-T-Ha…

I've heard Android is bringing out a wire-free version of android auto, that sounds way better than having to plug in your phone every time you want to enable it?

    • Yes, though having a decently wired setup isn't too bad. If I had the choice however wireless would absolutely be the go. Shame there will never be a firmware update to enable this on devices like this.

    • +2

Nope - if you don't plug your phone in, the battery drains pretty quickly whilst you're driving along using the GPS.

So you'll still be plugging in your phone…

      • Not unless you have a spot you can modify a wireless charging spot for. What I plan on doing when wireless comes to Australia.

    • Kenwood aftermarket head units in the USA have wireless android. But not in Australia. I suspect volumes too low to get regulatory approval.
Alpine and pioneer aftermarket head units have wireless CarPlay.

  • +1

I'm new to this after-market car media player thing, can anybody enlighten me on how can I check the compatibility of this device and how to install it? Thanks all.

    • +4

      Use this site: https://aerpro.com/headunit/sony/xav-ax100

You may need a mounting/facia kit to make it fit (if it's not standard DIN), and a harness to connect it to your car's existing wiring. As for installing it, I was able to manage just from YouTube tutorials :)

      • Thanks mate! Seems easy enough for me to install just by following the YouTube. :-)

        • Good luck!

      • +1

I'm new to this after market business as well.

I have a Honda accord 2007. Does that mean I need 3 items?

        1. Headunit to iso harness
        2. Installation Kit
        3. 1 of the 3 facias

        https://aerpro.com/vehicles/honda/honda-accord-2003-2007#-1

How much would I be looking at dollar figure wise total?

Is it fairly easy to install myself or should I get a professional to do it?

I'm trying to keep the budget down as much as possible.

        Tia

        • Depends on your car, and how easy it is to take apart the dash. Mine was fairly simple. Accessing some screws may be difficult, and also feeding the wires.

It looks like your particular dash has a bunch of climate controls to worry about? I'm not sure, sorry :/

  • Eh, standard aftermarket head unit.
I'd pay a bit more and go for a tesla screen setup

    https://phoenixandroidradios.com/collections/tesla-style-ver…

    • +9

      No thanks.

    • Thanks.

  • Good reverse camera for this unit?

    • Not included. Is capable.

    • The unit can connect to your reversing camera as long as you have it fitted already. I hooked this unit up to our factory fitted camera (IX35) and it looks good but I really miss the projection of the car shape that I had with the factory unit. Right now android auto shows me three lines that make it easy to see distance left but don't help me line up with a tight space and ensure I'm parked straight.

  • +1

I'd advise not buying from brandbeast, the seller that was suggested for wiring harnesses.
took them 6 weeks to send me a aerpro wiring harness for a unit i bought a few months ago.

    • Thanks for the heads-up, they came up as the first result when looking for Mazda 3 facia replacements.

    • I can report I have had a good experience with that store - a pair of speakers received promptly. Did pay the extra $3 for express postage though.

    • I bought a Toyota Din plate from Brandbeast as it was advertised as a different brand. was sent an Aerpro, which i could have sourced cheaper elsewhere.

    • I have had a positive experience with brandbeast last month so I can definitely vouch for them (Pioneer Double Din unit on a Holden Vectra)

    • Some of their items are ridiculously overpriced.

  • Cheapest carplay unit i've seen to date!

    • This JVC unit was a great deal, had disc slot too.

  • +1

Be aware this is a old model, x5000 and 250 have come out

  • +1

Does this have RDS? Ie tells you the radio station name and the song playing.

    • Yes, No, in that order - the radio station names do display, the current song does not.

  • So I found this kit: Aerpro Sony XAV-V631BT kit for Toyota Kluger 2007-2013, but it isn't clear if it will enable me to connect the factory fitted reversing camera?

  • +1

Sorry I know very little about these units - Can this be installed in a 2010 Corolla?

  • Really nice offer. Bought this for about $475 few months ago.
Having used this model i can recommend it. Really nice and not so funky user interface like in other brand models.

Also it is possible they’re trying to empty the stocks to give space for the newer ax200 and ax5000 models. So better get it now :-)

  • +1

You can download firmware to get rid of the annoying warning every time you start your car

  • It's wired for CarPlay right? Does anyone find that annoying? I'm happy with wireless Bluetooth for now, but I'm tempted.

  • Bought this early last year for $400. I fitted to my Hyundai i40 and works like a charm. I can't live without carplay

    • Is it hard to install yourself?

      • +12

It really depends on what you're installing yourself into.

        • Lol

        • +1

Wasn't so bad for my car. It was pretty straight forward

  • Warning! Probably takes about 15-17 seconds until it boots up and starts playing music. But reversing camera (If wired in, I got a $10 camera off ebay and it worked perfectly) works straight away.

    • +2

Thats BS mate. I have this unit - it takes about 6-7 seconds. Obviously if you want to put on the Android Auto its a little longer but still only and additional 5-6 seconds. If Android or Apple are taking too long to boot then the problem is with your phone not the head unit.

    • Got a link to the camera by any chance? I haven't installed one on my car yet.

      • Got heaps on ebay, just search reverse camera and choose one. Make sure you pick the ones with 3089 chip sets which provides crisper and better night images

  • Can it connect to your AC if they run through the factory unit?

  • -1

    Very important note

These are NOT a standard double DIN size

It's a single DIN unit with an overhanging face - this will NOT suit all vehicles and fascias that you are trying to fit it in.

    • +2

The overhanging-face-part is standard double DIN size - mine's installed into a standard double DIN hole with no problem.

      Note that it doesn't come with a cage - I used a https://aerpro.com/fp953000

    • These ARE standard double din. The install body is single din and the face is Doble din.

It comes with brackets to allow the body to screw into the double din holes,

It WILL fit in any double din holebecause it's smaller.

It has a beautiful flush fitting install profile too.

  • Hi Op, how do I know whether it fits my car or not?

    • +1

Aftermarket units are generally compatible with all cars. However this is a Double Din Unit. You will need to have a double din space or double din unit already in place from factory otherwise this wont work

The rest is buying a Fascia for the unit and either buy an wire adapter/harness for your car or you chop and solder your factory wires together however you lose the choice of going back to factory unit.

  • +1

I've always wanted one of these, but ended up with the poor man's version: magnet on the back of my phone, magnet on the dashboard, voila. $5 via eBay.

    • +1

How did you connect your reversing camera to your phone? ;)

      • +4

Web cam connected to a laptop and a generator in the boot.

  • Does anyone know if it supports factory steering wheel controls

    • Yes - but you will probably need to purchase an extra adapter, mine was an additional $130

      • +1

Are you sure you need an adaptor with this? You can train it to your car's controls as long as it's a standard resistive setup, if I'm not mistaken.

        • +1

I just went to the deals page and says support steering control don't know if have to purchase the adapter separately though the last time I change to a Chinese brand head unit no adapter need the original harness was all that i need for that.

        • Depends on the car - you still need the adaptors for some vehicles.

  • +1

not saying these are bad but really prefer the real android unit myself, not to mention they can download youtube videos or play multimedia formats, all other standard google services are available too, like google maps, gmail etc.

    • +2

What's a good Android head unit nowadays? The last time I looked at them, they were very iffy in terms of responsiveness, stability, and reliability.
Do they start up immediately, or do they have to boot up every time you start the engine?

      • +1

On my Chinese head unit (they are all made there these days) it can be set to "stand by" for a period you choose in the settings. I have mine set to 30 minutes and if i restart the car within that time the unit starts up instantly with all apps & features running that were on when you turned it off.
Mine is a Joying brand unit and has been brilliant for the couple of years i have had it.

        • +1

Dasaita is another pretty good brand too. Highest spec with quite affordable prices.

        • @jameswayne:
          @xywolap:

Thanks, I'll keep those in mind! I have heard of Joying but not Dasaita.

    • +2

Speaking from experience with a relatively expensive android unit, the performance and stability is much worse of. Android auto has a lot less whistles but it works all the time and as expected.

      • What brand/model is yours?

        • Joying 10inch Intel Sofia 4GB with Android 6

  • Hi Guys,

Do I need to purchase a facia if I want to install this to my toyota Yaris 2010?

I believe the current stock headunit is double DIN already.

    • Most Toyotas are a 200x100mm opening .. others are usually a 180x100mm. You can buy headunits for toyotas (200x100) that do not need facia fill in panels.

      • so I need facia for this particular sony headunit?

  • Any recommended installers in Sydney?

    • Strathfield Car Radios and Ryda dot com..
Installed pioneer speakers and head units with them twice with no problem

      • How much is installation normally?
