    Ruby is all but dead.

    • Netcraft confirms!

Bit of a broad statement right there. I think Javascript is the number one language to learn right now for people getting into web dev, but that's not to say that Ruby is dead. A lot of the bigger tech companies (in Melbourne anyway) all seem to still be using and hiring devs for Ruby.

    • Remember when it was the next big thing? Man I'm glad I didn't get sucked into learning it.

I'm going to have to disagree. I know a ton of startups in Sydney using Rails including myself. Using Rails is really easy to get MVPs up quickly instead of having to going through multiple libraries like in Javascript. Rails is old but it's also a mature ecosystem, and if you are doing heavy CPU-intensive computations instead of heavy I/O operations, then Ruby beats Javascript hands-on.

      • Apparently Ruby isn't dead yet in Sydney, Australia…

Really? Node's runtime performance is like the fastest out of all scripting languages (getting close to JVM), props to Google optimizing v8 non-stop.

        Good to know.
Last I heard, she was going off the rails…

          She's dynamic though.

I was learning a bit of ruby on sololearn on my phone while I was away. I got frustrated with it. Some of the constructs seem to be different just for the sake of being different. I mean whats with the switch statement, what's wrong with the way everyone else does it?

Ruby is a fun language to program in. Its one of my favourites for rapid prototypes and side projects, highly recommend.
