Post Meridiem - The only sell it to you after midday! :p

          @Josh, price match bro! ;)

Nice find! They're also clearing out the Canon Eos 1000D with a dual lens kit!

$549 - Canon Eos 1000D (Digital SLR) with a dual lens kit. Pretty good value for a beginner (but slightly outdated) dSLR:

Nice find and nice camera too :D

Photo quality is better than that of the IXUS130IS which retails $300 :)

Seriously it does! Take a look at the thread on whirlpool :)

    • Hirokuro or all
Do you recommend the A490 or A495 - seeing they are the same price
A495 has Digic III processor and A490 doesn't I gather
      Any other differences?

      • +2

        I have both camera's :)

TBH the A495 has a few extra features compared with the A490 however it doesn't impact on image quality at all!

The major difference (I found as a point and shoot camera) are:

        • the A490 has a superior LCD screen whilst the A495 is quite bad :/ - I don't know why though..
        • the A495 is made in Malaysia whilst the A490 is made in China
        • the A495 comes in a variety of colours (I have the blue) whilst the A490 only has the silvery blue colour.

      What's with the neg?

Don't believe me? Check out the thread on whirlpool below:

  • Link is down :(

    Sold out?

      Works for me (in Melbourne)

      • Thanks. was a browser problem:

Didn't get it in Safari; got it now in Chrome.

        A good buy.

        • Is this link Chrome only or something… In firefox it redirects you to an error page as well.

  • Think this is out of stock in Sydney. But they have the A495 for the same price http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Dig…

    • The 495 is the updated version.. takes SDXC cards but offers little other advantages going by the Officeworks spec list anyway.

    • Page no longer found - perhaps removed by Officeworks?

      • +3

        must have been ozbargained

        • +1 for 'ozbargained'! :D

  • These should be able to run CHDK firmware too… Pro-level features for $65!!

    • +1

The A495 has a really buggy Beta and isn't officially supported doubt it will ever get a full release

the A490 is not supported by CHDK

      • strange… they must be one of very few A series models not supported… Can't think why, they use the DIGIC III processor which is what my A720IS has… perhaps just no developer interest to port it across.

        • Cheers for mentioning CHDK, ima try that on my IXUS 80IS

      • There is meant to be a slightly better firmware here:

was mentioned on the thread linked from the wiki.

  • Tried to buy one just then as of 10:35am, online seems to be sold out, can you still get them in stores by ringing up or are they really out of stock lol

    • you don't have a phone to ring them?

  • Nope, can't afford one that's why I am on ozbargain!

Anyway, appears all Melbourne OW stores are out of stock, although some still have the display ones up for grabs.

    • If you can't afford a phone… well … Harvey Norman have one for $15. No excuse now!

      • +1

        But… But… The phone line rental :(

  • Sold out in East Perth (WA)

  • Went to Orange grove office works (nsw). They had the A495 for $69.

  • Currently available in store: http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Dig…

How does this compare to the Samsung deal? I realize this has a couple of less mega-pixels.. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/41500

    Thanks
    Sam

    • Megapixels above a certain number is not as important as the quality of the lens and other factors. Read some reviews to find out what the picture quality is like.

      • Thanks, as stated by my post "I realise this is a couple of mega-pixels less", I am more interested in peoples opinions, as I am not a keen photographer, looking for the best camera out of the two cheapies.
IF anyone has already compared the two, your advice/opinion would be much appreciated
        Thanks
        -Sam

        • What I can tell you is that my ancient (in Internet time) 5 megapixel Canon prosumer takes visibly better photos than my newer 7 megapixel Nikon idiot camera. So don't get fixated on megapixels.

If nothing else look at the sample photos in the reviews. I reckon they both will do the job for you if you just want photos for grandma. Anyway in a year or half they will be obsolete so if you make a mistake, which is unlikely, you can get a better one.

  • I did a quick search: http://www.camera-catalog.com/compares/popular/samsung_es28_…
Looks to me the Canon has a bit more features, however the samsung has 5 x optical zoom compared to 3.3..
Much of a muchness I guess!
