  • If it's only in app, then you can't use cash back, correct me if I'm wrong.

I bought Red dead 2 with this code on web, works, and got email for cashback.

    • I bought via browser on pc, the code worked fine.

  • Would it be better to wait for a 20% eBay discount like the Good Guys last deal?

Very unlikely someone else selling a new model of Kindle with a lower price than Amazon itself.

I was looking forward to the new Paperwhite, but that's incredibly disappointing. As far as I can tell the only difference is it's now waterproof, and it has double the storage. Is it common for people to read their kindle at pools? And as for the storage, the old Kindle can already hold thousands of books. It took them three years to come out with this?

      Book em dano

If you look at the advertising images it's the main way that women who wear bikinis read their Kindle.

    • +3

well waterproof is quite useful I'd say as well as storage, both things are increasing the value of e-reader. Did you expect something in particular?

There are many things they can improve, but that'd just basically be turning it into another Oasis. I think a few neat minor upgrades would be adding Audible support. It shouldn't drive the cost up too much, all it'd need is a speaker or a headphone jack. That would also give the extra storage a compelling use. Type-C port would be nice, too. Not sure what else to add that wouldn't drive the cost up into Oasis territory, but that's a nice start IMO.

          Thanks for elaborating!

        • They should have just replaced the PW with the Oasis Gen 1 but in plastic with a bigger built in battery - not the battery cover. In my opinion, the Oasis has a far superior form factor and physical page turn buttons are fantastic.

The bath is a pretty common place for reading, so this would help.

    • It's actually a big deal if you have owned a previous Kindle. I didn't like the flushed screen or the backlighting. Those are my main gripes with the current Paperwhite.

      • Can you elaborate on the screen improvements?

The specs look identical, aside from the fact that the new one has more LEDs, which just means a brighter display? I never had an issue with the brightness on the old Kindle. I usually keep it at around 40%.

But now you can read while sitting at the bottom of the pool. I think this is a feature we've all been waiting for imho.

  • +1

Other new features of this Kindle, an extra led, redesigned home screen, the ability to load Audio books onto device and listen via Bluetooth headphones, which is why it's 8gb (as well as 32gb version)

Not sure the size of audio books, but I'm betting you'd fit a few, AND if you sign up for Audible this month you get a free Echo Dot (don't think theres a deal for this yet?)

Are you sure about the audiobook aspect, it makes no mention of that on the product page…

      • Taken from Gizmodo review. However I did add the Audible part myself seeing as Amazon loves integration, maybe its just audio files?

        https://www.gizmodo.com.au/2018/10/new-amazon-kindle-paperwh…

        • No, it does mention Audible in that review too.
Just not in the detail page on Amazon, interesting.

        • Hmm, it might be the Australian version doesn't? Because the Oasis supports audible in the US, but the Australian version doesn't for some weird reason. It's likely this article is just a copy past from their US version.

    • It does have Bluetooth but not for Audible, it seems.

    • I can't find the free Dot offer on audible.com.au. Do you have a link?

      • Email from amazon sent today at 1100am, doesn't appear targeted but not sure.

Dunno if i'll bother, there are a few books I wanna listen to but dunno if a Dot is worth the trouble

  • if only the kindle was a little larger, I find 6" screens to be too small, Almost the size of our latest smart phones.

    • Have you seen seen the Kindle Oasis?

i hope my Kindle Keyboard Gen 3 with Physical page Buttons last a very long time or they go back physical buttons on future paper whites

a DX paperwhite with buttons would be good too

    • +1

I agree! I much rather the tactile feedback when ‘turning a page’ and find that I often accidentally turn a page when I’m using a touchscreen kindle.

I've had a first-gen Paperwhite for six years, and it's still like it's brand new. I use it all the time. I paid $170 six years ago; it was well worth every single dollar if you are hesitating about buying one.

I would love a new kindle but the only time I read books these days is actually not reading them at all, but listening through audible at the gym/drive home/ at work when its quiet.

I cant read at any of those times :(
