Live in HK currently and use the Airport Express a lot. HKD$135 return is actually a good price, as using an Octopus card (Hong Kong version of Myki / Opal) is HKD$205 return to & from Hong Kong Island (Hong Kong MTR Station > Airport). This price is also cheaper than what Travel Agents offer, which I paid $153 just recently (Travel Expert Agency franchise).

The irony of using 'Oz'bargain for what is specifically another countries (HK)bargain offer is not lost on me.

    • I'm heading over next week for a friend's wedding so this is definitely helpful. Any other tips? Also I have a full day there myself before the others arrive. I was thinking of doing the peak tram and maybe trying to find a food your, anything else you'd recommend?

      • Visiting Victoria's Peak (where the most iconic panoramic view of HK lies) is a must. The Peak Tram? So-so as the queue may be 60+ minutes during weekends. I would suggest taking a 'mini-bus' no.1 instead from HK MTR station / Two IFC (http://www.16seats.net/eng/gmb/gh_1.html) BUT the peak tram is extremely steep, this may be a unique experience in itself to justify.

        • You can also take a 'regular' tram which is double-decker ($2.6) from Central to Causeway Bay, the most busiest pedestrian crossing in HK (Think Shibuya intersection but less grand). It's a good route to soak in the sights of the city.

        • HK MTR Station / IFC is also where the Central Harbour Ferry Terminal is - pay $3 to catch the 'Star Ferry' cross harbour to Tsim Tsa Tsui. Interesting fact, this journey used to take an hour but is now a few minutes.

Google any Dim Sum / Yum Cha, most recommendations are authentic enough - oh and pick up a sim card from any 7-11 or Convenience store (HKD$78) makes it super easy to googlemap and find other hot spots to hang out nearby!

        Hope this helps.

      • NOOOOO DON't DO VIC PEAK!!!

I've been living here for the last year doing exchange @ uni, and Vic peak is underwhelming! Even at night!
There are so many better (proper) hikes! Sunset Peak, Suicide Cliff, Lions rock to name a few.

my suggestion is suicide cliff, its super easy to get to, and its so amazing especially if you arrive during the arvo and stay there for sunset.

Vic peak is whack, you get to the top and there is like a shopping mall, with burger king. I guess my expectation was an actual hike with amazing views, but after doing all these other hikes, I'm like meh!

Also if you are game, The hong kong trail is a 50km hike. Pretty much end up at vic peak. I did it a few weeks ago, took 12 hours, but we had a few people who were injured so we had to slow it down, but if you are game, definitely do it. And you could easily do it under 12 hours if u are decently fit. The first 24km are hardest, big ups and downs, next 26km it's just constant straight lines.

Also, check out vic peak, but if you got time do other hikes, suicide cliff is my advice.

      • Seeing as you've had someone recommend The Peak and someone recommend against it, I thought I'd just weigh in with my $0.02.

I think The Peak is a pretty good attraction worth going to. Pretty cool views of Hong Kong that you (probably?) can't get elsewhere.

Agree with not necessarily needing to take the tram though - at least not both ways. It's probably the most convenient in the way of least thinking. If you pick the tram one way, I'd recommend taking it up because of the steep incline as carbonmeister mentioned.

A good time to go, ignoring crowds but purely considering the views, would be shortly before sunset, and then staying until just after sunset. Hopefully the weather works in your favour. I say this because the view from The Peak during the day is a bit different to the view at night - and both are beautiful in their own right.

The Peak definitely has got a very touristy feel, but I personally find it quite enjoyable - and I say this as someone that has lived in Hong Kong for 10 years of my life - so Hong Kong is not really a "tourist destination" for me.

        • @knobbs Some exploration in Portland Street? :P

      • Definitely get yourself an Octopus card, it makes it much easier to get around Hong Kong, and as a convenient payment method. Other than paying for public transport you can also use it to pay for taxi fares, meals at fast food restaurants, and even shopping at supermarkets.

If museums are your thing, there's a bunch of museums around Hong Kong, all have free entry, but they are all also closed at least one day a week - check the respective museum's website for the opening hours. There's the Space museum, Science Museum and Museum of History all clustered around Tsim Sha Tsui
        https://www.museums.gov.hk/en_US/web/portal/plan-your-visit.…

There's also the Symphony of Lights at Victoria Harbour at 8pm each night. You can view it from the harbourfront in Tsim Sha Tsui on the Kowloon side of the harbour or from the promenade outside the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on the HK Island side.

If you're in to religious monuments there's the Tian Tan Buddha at Ngong Ping on Lantau Island.

I'd also suggest a visit to the Kowloon Walled City Park in Kowloon City - the park is built on the site of what used to be the Kowloon Walled City - at its peak it was the most densely populated place in the world. The history of the walled city is quite interesting (to me at least).

When you're tuckered out, find a cha chaan teng somewhere for a Hong Kong style snack and a drink.

    • Do you work near the airport?

Just thinking that taking one of the airport buses could be cheaper..?

  • Regular price here: http://www.mtr.com.hk/en/customer/tickets/tf_index.html
Scroll down to the middle of the page.

  • Cheaper at A$13.55 here: https://www.klook.com/activity/71-airport-express-hong-kong/…

There also seems to be a HK$10 discount for first time users of the app with a promo code. DYOR

    • Hi we have more cheaper tickets, such as our Tsing Yi station one way ticket is only A$7.88 and Hong Kong station roundtrip ticket is A$23.93, both are cheaper now!

We also send you a $10 coupon once you finished you purchase and experienced it!

      • Sweet! are the hotel shuttles included as well? klook.com seems to have it but not on your site.

        klook.com:
Free pick up and drop off between Airport Express Stations and select hotels. Please view the shuttle bus routes

        EDIT=====

No worries, seems like the free shuttles are an airport service, and is accessible by anyone with a valid ticket!

        • Yes, if you get a airport express ticket, you can enjoy free shuttle bus service between stations and selected hotels.

      • how is it cheaper? it's still 135?

  • I am looking at buying the round trip to Ysing Yi Station. Not sure if this locks a date as the option is only to choose one date. Does anyone know the validity of this ticket and do i have to lock in a Return date or can i just use it and validate it on my return?

    • You have to lock in your first date of use. For round-trip ticket, 2nd transfer must be used within 30 days after the first date of use.
