POTPLANT

Hi this is my first post, been researching this product ridiculously, the comments and votes will test this deal :D
So MSI GS73 17" thin ultrabooks come in several types - main differences being 1080p 144Hz screen or 4k 60Hz screen, and Nvidia 1060 or Nvidia 1070 graphics cards. From what I can see the 4k at 4k cant quite run smooth games on this machine, so you would drop the resolution to play games, but good for everything else.
These models have 4K screen:
6RF-041AU
7RF-239AU
8RE-013AU
The 8* series is the latest in Aus, and 8RE-013AU model goes for RRP $3,399, some places have $3,299, this store overprices at $3,739, but the discount brings sub $3k at $2,991 delivered.

    3 grand for 1060, pass.

    • +1

      Totally agree!

  • +5

I'm no tech genius, but wouldn't this system struggle to run games at 4k anyway?

    • You are correct. It could play >8 year old games at 4K maybe.

      • SKKKKKYYYYYRRRRIIIIIIMMMMMM

  • No way josé.

    • Go to Metabox or something man, $3k for a 1060 machine is completely absurd.

    • Hey dude, that's my name. Don't wear it out and treat it with respect, will ya. ;)

  • +1

    Someone called?

  • Not really a great configuration for gaming. You'd want a 1080 TI paired with a 4k screen and even then 60hz is going backwards. 144hz 1080p is preferred, especially with a lower tier card.

    • +2

Even 1440p with a 1080Ti would be good at this price.

    • I don't prefer 144hz :p I can't feel the diff

  • +1

Machine fundamentally flawed in having a beautiful screen but a insufficiently powerful GPU.
Anyone interested in 4k needs to consider a GTX1070 minimum.

    • +1

I have a 1070 laptop (and not a max-Q one) and i doubt it could hit 4K on high settings and keep 60fps+ on any game except maybye rocketleague.

      • Keyword: Laptop.

        • Uh…yes thats what the topic is Zylam - gaming laptops. Besides the point, the laptop 1070s bench the near the same as desktop ones - key difference usually is the CPU is a fair bit slower and you cant OC the CPU/GPU. So I'm struggling to see your point anyway.

          • @Kill Joy: My point was that regardless of specs and price, laptops, at least at this stage will struggle to hit 4K for gaming. There is no point even going down that route because of the restrictions of laptops. Also synthetic benchmarks do not give the full picture. A desktop grade 1070 will win out on a laptop one because of the TDP restrictions alone, then like you said the other desktop grade counterparts bring in more performance.

I doubt any laptop on the market will hit higher than 20 for 4K on high for actual demanding games like AC, TR etc. Desktop 1070's just manage to hit 30 on high/ultra settings at 4K in AC.

  • +1

Yeah this is definitely a terrible deal, considering that you can easily get a 1070 max q, i7 8750h machine with 144hz screen at 1080p for this price. Thanks for posting but the absolute maximum for a 1060 machine should be 2k tops. If it was a 1080 machine at this price point it'd be a deal.

  • The MSI Stealth are really nice laptops, but $3K :-(

  • +2

Old chassis (3 generations) refreshed with new parts.

Might have been acceptable thermal design for a thin and light when it first came out, but manufacturers have come a long way in thermal dissipation.

Not only that, pairing a GTX 1060 with a 4K panel, and then selling it for GTX 1070 prices is simply unacceptable.

Good price on the laptop, but the laptop was already heavily overpriced anyway.

  • +1

no way for 3k for 1060 laptop.
    I bought EVGA SC15 for $1550.
great laptop and has everything I needed

  • Unless you need to "have a gaming laptop" you could better spend this on building your own high end desktop PC.
There are definitely other gaming laptops from other brands which offer better performance for the price you are paying for.

I've had my own custom built gaming laptop and spent over $5000 and it wasn't worth it.
The weight, poor battery life, size (17" widescreen), constant fan/cooling requirements made it a very expensive desktop replacement and I felt it was like carrying a nuclear football.

Sure it was fun playing the latest games for the first two years then only to find out you needed to upgrade again.
I highly suggest you really consider why you need a gaming laptop and if you really need to play in 4K. With the amount you are willing to pay, you can get a decent desktop PC and can always upgrade components when you have the extra $$$$ to.

i didnt see how big the ram is . only max 32 g.

    • Unacceptable. People need a minimum 64gb ddr4 these days to even surf the net

  • this store overprices at $3,739

That's $340 above the manufacturer RRP.
Terrible business practice and you should not be giving them money for that.

  • 1060 at 3k LMAO, yeah sure.

  • Hi OP,

Would the reason you like this laptop is that its thin for a 17" gaming laptop?

If you dont mind bulky the Alienware 17 is selling for $2598.99 with similar specs?

    https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-laptops/alienware-17/sp…

The bigger size might help running cool playing games compared to the thinner MSI Stealth

  • +1

Bought a metabox laptop 9 months ago for $1800 with a gtx 1060, better cpu but normal 1080p led panel. Still better than this deal

  • Horrible price, and that form factor is going to cause throttling quick.

Have you looked at some metabox builds?

  • +1

Don’t buy this it is very poor value.

For example I bought an Aorus X5, 3K gsync screen with a 1070GTX … two years ago for a bit cheaper than the OP.

    TWO years ago.

The GeForce 10 series is a 3+ year old graphics card.

That 1060 at $3000 is not worth the money and is already kinda underpowered.

    Build a custom desktop instead.

Trust me, I own a high end gaming laptop - money is better spent building a desktop for gaming.

  • Serious question: Where do people who own gaming laptops play them? I would assume not at home, because you could be playing a desktop instead. Where do you take it to play? At work? At a shopping mall? On a train?

I've wanted one myself, but aside from traveling, there's no use cases for me. My boss doesn't allow me to play games at work unfortunately.

    • I fantasize about having a lot of friends and we'll meet up at our best friend's house who owns a huge guest house next to the pool and we'll play Diablo 2 to the sun comes up and than my best friend's sister's best friend who is also a supermodel see's my Windforce and I give her my Bul Kathos wedding band and we get married and have Diablo kids named Pindle, Mephisto and John.

Desktop's are too cumbersome and only do one thing in one place. Student's want an all in one machine for work and play. Too expensive to own both. One laptop does it all.

      • Hmm. I dunno. Until recently gaming laptops were way to big for work.

But I guess students do have more places to play.

Fair point about students not being able to afford both, but honestly, you can buy a desktop for gaming, and a cheaper non-gaming laptop for work and it would come to around this price.

        Desktop's are too cumbersome

They weren't designed to be moved. You play them at home. If you play them on the go, then fair point. I'm just curious where people go to play them. If I was able to play on the go, I'd probably bring a Switch instead. Less cumbersome than a 17" laptop that needs to be plugged in if you want more than a couple of hours of gaming. Playing at home on laptop is a compromised experience.

Diablo 2 was the shit. I poured so many hours into that game. Was poorly balanced for hell difficulty though. Most of the heroes builds were worthless. All Amazon builds were crap in Hell, for Sorc only frozen orb and static field did any real damage. Hammerdin was the only viable pally. Barb was probably the best. Necro I think was not viable either.

        • Even for "home" a desktop is cumbersome. When you share a unit with a few people every inch matters. You got a monitor, the tower, speakers, keyboard, and mouse. That's 3 power points too!

          • @DASHCAM NOW DUDE: Ah. I guess that would be a consideration if you only have one desk to share between you all.

I have the desk to myself, so I don't have to move the thing. But if I was gaming on a laptop, I don't think I could game anywhere other than a desk. Certainly wouldn't want to do it on my lap. So if someone else is using the desk while I wanted to play, I guess that's that.

  • Think the retailer is the proble. Sydnectec is just not cheap despite the 20% off codes

  • Hi everyone, OP here, wrapping up this, answering others:
My goal several-fold: was a level up from 1080P so QHD 3K or 4K, def not 15", def 17", reasonably featured and hi res FPS and strategy gaming at more than 60Hz, and to also use for my work which is dev and tech work GIS/mapping/spatial in 2D and 3D, and needing to be portable running around town a lot, preferably slim bezel. I dont think what I want exists yet, but it wont be long.
I ended buying a Metabox Prime-S/Clevo PA70ES-G (eventual delivered model was PA71ES-G) w Nvidia 1070 GTX 8GB GSYNC and QHD 3K 1440P 120Hz screen, for $2900 (no Windows, I'm Ubuntu Linux but eventually will dual boot needing Win 10 Pro for business)
So far, I am very pleased. The QHD for normal desktop 17" is perfect resolution for apps, dev, browsing and docs and not hitting the real estate issues I seem to have with 1080P, as well as for my eyesight. Still testing gaming but so far QHD FPS is 150+ on common games 2015 and older. Interestingly though, from Metabox contact I think the market has not accepted 3k screens, and this is one of the last ones, and next laptop designs (for 17" slim bezel, Metabox said early 2019) will only be 1080P or 4K to start with. Might be just a 17" thing, I dont know. Id be interested for a 4k 120Hz or 144Hz 1080ti 17" slim bezel if that comes out, but it would have to be very powerful.
    Cheers all
