Looks like a few people will be porting from Catch to Kogan and vice versa quite a bit if this keeps up.

  • +5

Ok, whose been a "new customer" for Kogan mobile on multiple occasions now!?

    • +5

I've always been new.. at least 20 times now, the internet at my house is too crap.
Old android phone + Xiaomi amplifier + $1 kogan sim = temporary crap-tier NBN because my ADSL is at 400KB/s..

      • -1

You should probably complain about your ADSL as I'm pretty sure they have to provide a minimum of 1.5MBs.

        • Telstra have no obligation. As long as you can make a call the line is "good"

        • All ADSL in Australia is "Up to" the specified speed.

I beleive the minimum on ADSl 2 is 1.5Mbps or 150 KB/s or thereabouts before they will do anything.

      • I use that too. Except I got a 4g modem plugged into a Netgear router (with rooter installed) as a solution. Fairly cheap to setup and now the xiaomi has retired as the router has good range, more memory and bandwidth works well with chrome cast etc.

        • Which model Netgear do you have?

          • +2

            @cheepo: Wndr3700 is mine. Here’s supported modem lost. https://www.ofmodemsandmen.com/routers.html

            • @1-Bargain: Thanks for the link 1-Bargain. I haven't looked into custom firmware for modems for a few years now (I last used the "tomato" firmware an old TP-link modem 4+ years ago) so I was curious to see what people were using now and what improvements/features have been implemented since.

        • I do the same at my office and also previously used a Chinese router with r00ter installed but have now switched to a Kogan 4G router.
As the roof is made from tin and I'm surrounded by tall factories, I was getting around 5Mbps down 2Mbps up, so I installed a 4G antenna and now hitting around 28Mbps down and 25Mbps up.

Started to lose count of the number of times now, between the three of us; all logged on a personal database now.

We are looking at continuing our 365 day prepaid plans also.

      • +2

You know things are getting serious when you're maintaining databases and excel spreadsheets at home and not at work.

        • +1

          Tell us about it!

Have been activating Vodafone data sims (35 GB that can last 180 days) too; have 8 of these also. Mother is still waiting for NBN (until maybe Feb) and these were on special at Coles about 3+ months ago for $20 each (in lieu of $50), so she is using these in her pocket wifi. Doesn't use much data herself so one sim lasts her at least a month!

We hope to remain with Kogan mobile on those 365 day plans (small, medium and large) but may even look to port these over to another telco (possibly Vodafone) when the days expire and then port back to Kogan Mobile after another month.

  • Hi, if I been an existing customer for Kogan, how do you become a new customer? did you port your number to a different network other then Kogan or did u just change your number?

I would like to keep my own number, has anyone been through this situation yet??

  • which network is Kogan using?

    • +3

      Says Vodafone in the OP!

      • +4

        i swear i didn't see it!
(and i was scanning through the post too)

        i feel embarrassed now :-\

          Its Friday

  • Got this for the wifey, used a $10 Kogan referral voucher. Works out to $1.63 per month, totally worth it.

    • +1

Where to get the $10 referral voucher? Thanks mate lol

    • i dunno, there’s this one - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/414657 which works out to $0.99 per month, which gives 32GB. i’m really confused as to why people are buying this one when they could get the other one and get almost double the data for almost half the price. :/

      • +2

Er… afaik that’s a one-off promo for 30 days. After that it’s back to whatever it is supposed to be per month - $49.90 per month or something like that.

This one is for 90 days before it’s back to $99.90 for 90 days.

Better read the fine prints mate

You could of course keep changing network and hope the same promo is available each time you change…

        • Hmm, thanks for letting me know. I bought a few, so fingers crossed they continue the deal :)

  • Powered by the Vodafone 4G network.

Anyone know If there's no 4G reception means no reception at all?

    • +1

You should still get 3g in that case

      • Thanks, got 1

      • There is some blackspots. Near me there is a few small towns with little to no reception .

    • +1

nope, it means it’ll drop down to 3G in non-4G areas, but in 4G areas it’ll be faster. :)

  • damn question, is the price only for first month?

    • +3

The price is for the first 90 days total (3 months). Then if not cancelled would jump back up to its normal price

      • +2

Then how do you keep your number? Are you able to get a 365 plan once the first 90 days finish? And what the normal price?

        • +1

I haven’t personally done it. However based on the ozbargain conversations about it previously. When you are signing up, it asks if you want to keep your number (port), you would select yes if this is what you want.

As for the longer plan, I would assume you would buy a 365 recharge and ensure automatic renewal was turned off for the 90 day plan you were on.

Kogan has their prices on their website so normal prices for the 90 day 17gb is $99.90 and the 365 day 17gb is $399.90.

To see the other options available you can go directly to their website here https://www.kogan.com/au/shop/phones/?q=kogan%20mobile%20pre…

Anyone know if the 365 days plan is ever on sale? need to find a new sim plan since Virgin Mob is shutting down. Thanks

    • +3

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/359466

Can become an existing customer for $0.99.

    • +3

Yes. There were several specials going for the 365 day plans almost a year ago. The "small" 365 plan was about $27 ($152? in lieu of $179) cheaper, the "large" about $80-100 cheaper and, even better, there was a special "2 for 1" deal on the "medium" which I shared with another OzBargainer (I purchased for about $300?, OzBr paid me her half by PayPal (had a sim handy already), so I sent her the sim code, and later posted her sim card when it arrived. Since we ported over 3 accounts to Kogan Mobile the monthly GB allocations increased in all 3. There does not appear to be any promotions for the 365 day plans for some time though, like there has been for the recent 30 and 90 day plans. If there are I suspect a number of people who purchased like we did may port out to another telco for a month+ and then port back as new customers. We were with Vodafone before and the changeover was very fast.

  • Was running low cheers

  • +1

Is there minimum days not with Kogan to be "new"?

    • +1

I believe it is a month but suggest to go over to be sure.

  • Perfect timing. Needed exactly this for rellos visiting next month.

  • +2

Many thanks Op..just bought one for a backup nxt month as well.
Also an extra thanks from one of the Citizen deals last year. Going great.

  • +1

Hmmm surely kogan is at a loss with this constant deal or else they use all the info they get out of this for the Kogan Super?

  • +1

What's the minimum number of days you've to be ported out from Kogan for you to be considered a new customer when you port in again? I am assuming that porting out and immediately porting in on the same day or in a day or two won't work.

    • No personal experience but from what I have read on ozbargain it’s a month (31days possibly?)

      • +1

The Vodafone Sims work well then 35days and cheap on eBay.

The port is also very quick.

  • How can you cancel your account before the 90 days is over?

    • +1

Port out to another network provider.

  • If I am an existing customer with an existing Kogan number. Would I be counted as a new customer if I take out a new number with Kogan?

    • +1

      Yes.
