The higher tariffs you pay with AGL kind of negate this deal…

    • +8

AGL provide me close to the best gas rates in my area. No complaints from me.

      • -3

You are in the minority then.

        • I know because I researched the best provider on a website I saw on a TV ad that was funded by AGL referral commissions made affordable by higher rates.

    • +4

You have no idea of hacks to get best AGL rates and account credits. They are cheapest for me buy a huge margin

You have no idea of hacks to get best AGL rates

How do you know I can't get better hacks off other providers ?

        • In my area of Sydney i did the math and checked both advertised and reported user discounts+base rates trying to nab a sweet deal and best from AGL came out equal best from all available suppliers for my usage pattern. I'd happily leave the sods but is what it is here at least.

    • Who are you with if you don't mind me asking?

I'm with AGL and receive 29% off gas and 41% off electricity.
I did all the sums (supply charge, tariff comparison, discounts before GST and doscount only off usage, etc…) across a few providers and AGL were slightly better.

      • +1

I'm in vic so not sure if same for everywhere, but if you leave they try to get you back with 32 gas and 44 elec

      • +5

        What are you paying?

Electricity is crazy, no one ever says what they're paying as though this is an unimportant detail. The discounts are important to mention but their simply meaningless without rates.

The entire system is of course, according to the ACCC, "largely broken".

Their genius fix is leaving the entire system in place where people are doing maths problems for hours to find the cheapest price which is so much of a rip off that mentioning the rates is always avoided. Oh, and to "fix it" they'll set the price, just like it was nationalised only their leaving a system they called "broken" in place and setting the price to pay all it's shareholders and CEO's with your money.

This can be avoided by voting for The Green's who claim they're going to do the only sane thing which is dismantle the "broken" system and go back to nationalised cheap electricity which isn't bankrupting the entire nation by threatening business viability and families according to the ACCC.

interesting. you actually mentioned a party

I'm with Agl and they pay me. Last quarter was $90 with 3 people in the house + 6.5kW solar. That might be why people don't say what they pay because every household is entirely different usage profiles. Also every house may have differing amounts of solar with different historical feed in tariffs. Also, each state will pay different amounts even with the same provider.

          • @xsacha: 20c feed in tariff for me, not as good as other older plans / FIT, but now I Don't care about power prices. I use solar all day. Hopefully one day I'll get batteries and be done with the power network

      • that is huge discount. Is it on usage only or whole bill?

      • +1

29% and 41% off what is fairly important…
It's known that companies which advertise large discounts generally have a higher base price.

    • proof ???

    • I disagree, i got 39% discount from them in WA for gas, highest discount thus far.. you just gottta play real hard ball

    • +1

True, More expensive than Origin and Energy Australia after discount

  • Is this targeted? I'm with AGL but I only see 5% off Coles, Woolies, Caltex and David Jones gift cards

Edit: My bad, I did a search and found it.

    • i did a search and can't find it (could only find the 5% off one). could you please advise what search criteria you used?
      thanks for your help

      • Couldn’t find on main page but when I did a search “jb” I found it.

        • i did an empty search and literally went through every single offer and still couldn't find it :(

EDIT: and yeah i did try "jb" already. only the 5% offer comes up for me. weird.

          • @coldazure: It was originally 6.5% but I guess it's now reverted to 5%.

  • You can get the exact same deal via the Youi rewards program. Up to $1000 per redemption. It appears you can redeem multiple times too.

    • +2

But you have to be with youi which negates any deal

      • Yes, true. You need to be with AGL for this deal also.

  • Op , do you know if this is instant or need to wait 3 days?

    • +1

To get any e-gift cards from AGL, you have to pay by EFT and wait about 3 days.

      • Had the same question, it says 1% surcharge on cc payment is it still 3 days then or instant EFT makes sense since it has to clear etc.

        • JB e-gift cards seem to be taking a full day or 2 lately if I buy from entertainment book or health fund. Used to be pretty instant. Not sure what's going on there. Just confidential bad timing?

  • For recently released flagship phones would these discount gift cards be better than using price protection on 28 degrees?

  • Great timing as I'm in need of this but sadly not with AGL :/ any other places offer discounted JB cards?

    • +5

if you know any woolies staff members we get 5% off gift cards, and JB are available

      • How do you get that?

      • Thanks mate

    • RACQ rewards does 5% for jb HiFi if you happen to be a member, I think lifestyle membership is around $25-30 a year, my wife has it and it saves me tonnes at ebgames when I price match and then pay with gift cards.

    • Stock up Ultimate Kids/Teens cards when on sale, more than 10% off. These cards are only for instore purchase though.

      • Thanks, seems like these are rare to come by - last sale was in 2016 right?

        • No, about every 3 months in Woolies I think. You can get one with 1k pts in Coles this week, but it does not help much.

          • @Neoika: I see - @Woolies is it announced or do you have to go in-store to find out?

  • 32% gas and 41% electricity ….that is crazy.

Wish its the same with NSW, only getting 22% gas and 26% electricity.

I can understand petrol prices by the differences/margins but I really do not understand why do we need to negotiate utility bills when it should be the same or slightly similar across all the people in Australia.

Getting freebies like movie tickets, free apple or android devices and etc I can understand for the new customer to win over them but a 41% and 32% discount?

That is a big confusion pricing for the consumers, if you do not know about this they could be ripping you off big time $$$

Why do I feel somebody in the govt is not doing his/her job properly in this ridiculous pricing scheme.

    • In NSW I get 28% discount for electricity with AGL.

    • I get 32% discount on electricity and 25% on gas with AGL in NSW.

The best way to negotiate it is to have a deal from another provider and trying to get it beaten. After getting this deal from AGL, I still rang Energy Australia and asked them if they can beat it. They only offered to match it. So I told them forget it.

  • Sorry! Lumo gives me 7.5% for jb hifi gift cards

    • what discount are you getting from lumo energy?

  • If you use a credit card, it can be 5.565% discount.
For example, if you buy $1000 of GC, you will pay $944.35.
    ( -> 10000.9351.01 = $944.35)

    • correct, that is a disadvantage. moreover, it needs 3 days to come through!

  • Not on my agl account. Still showing 5%
Only subscribe to Gas and in WA

    • If you search with "HIFI" on the rewarding page, you can see the deal.

      • Yeah tested job or hifi still 5%

        • me too. there must be some other sort of qualifying criteria i guess.

  • Youi have 6.5% off of JB hi-fi, too :)

  • Did FlyBuys use to do an electronic retailer for egift cards but now don't? Swear they use to have JB Hifi for some strange reason.
