    Tempting…

Finally, Huawei is entering Oz's ultrabook market.

    • +2

      Trollolol

    • +11

Agreed, blatant rip off of the EliteBook.
Or did you mean YogaBook, SurfaceBook, etc?

      • +4

The poster is wrong saying that it's commercial suicide but it's disingenuous to suggest that this looks equally similar to any of those laptops as it does to the Macbook.

For my money it's a much better product, though.

        • +2

OP/I wasn't referring to the look though, only the title.

          • +5

@flopsy: To call a product a joke just because of the name without mentioning anything about the specs or price.. means they're the joke.

            • +1

              @spiff: Can't tell if he's trolling or a fanboy.

              • +1

@flopsy: Haha neither. I couldn’t care less about Apple. All I’m saying is if Huawei are able to make a premium product, why would they make a joke out of its name? It just cheapens the whole experience to me.

                • @The Almighty Dollar: It's not a joke. They have a line of products referenced as 'Mate'. So this is pointless to argue.

They also then used 'book' just like MS (Surface) have, HP (Elite) have, and Lenovo (Yoga).

                  • -1

@passwordistaco: Sure, but when they’re all combined it’s got to be a joke. Matebook - macbook, X - iPhone X, Pro - MacBook Pro. I’ll try to get over it though.

          • @flopsy: Ah yes. My mistake.

Huawei has Ryzen laptop too. Here hoping they release it here.

    • +1

The Honor MagicBook with Ryzen R5 2500U is on pre-order for US$599.99 on Gearbest. Nearly US$300 off.

  • +2

Can you stack this offer with students discount?

    • Yea i wanna know this too.

    • +1

No but this latest offer is $40 cheaper than using the student discount when it was full priced just yesterday. I cancelled my order and reordered for the cheaper price.

Other than the -U processor chips synonymous with ultrabooks there is an awful lot to like about these laptops.

    • +1

And even then 8th gen U chips are much closer to their normal voltage counterparts than ever before.

    • Technically they aren't even making the traditional 35w "M" chips anymore anyway.
These will bust well above 35w anyway which is great for most mobile tasks.

I do like what they do with the 28w U series though, particularly with the on-die DRAM like they use in the touchbar 13" MacBook pros.
Physics is a bitch though ;(

  • Purchased!

  • The i5 model price is closer to the USD equivalent, definitely a premium for the i7

    • It's not that different, the i7 cost me $2,190.49 AUD after conversion and sales tax (California).

      • I see, but that would mean the i5 in Australia is more of a bargain then.

  • Took them long enough

  • Why is microsoft pushing this brand?

    • They have many brands available

  • +3

somehow my room mate got the i5-8g-256g-MX150 version.
really impressed with the quality of the thing.

Can't wait for these to go on Ebay!

  • There are new models with i7-8565u coming soon

    • +1

That's a different laptop. It's the Matebook 13. Not sure what the difference is and whether it replaces or compliments the X Pro

  • If these things are anything as good as their Mate Pro 20 smartphone then they will soon take over the technology world. Having had the S9+ and S9 this year the Mate 20 Pro is so much better than both. The reviews of this laptop suggests the same thing.

    • Really? My experience with P9 was not great. That phone became very slow after half year of use.

Ive had this laptop since launch. Got it from china at launch. Awesome laptop. Feel free to ask me any questions you guys might have

    • Hi. What specs do you have? I'm looking at the base model (i5, 256GB), and tossing up between this and the Surface Laptop 2 (128GB version - don't mind less storage).

One of my main concerns is how hot does it get? I use my 2013 Macbook Air on my lap 99% of the time, and in the warmer months, it often gets too hot to lay flat on my lap. And I'm not really pushing it either.

How's the battery life? What don't you like about it? The web cam placement doesn't bother me.

      Thanks in advance.

In china they sold many more variants and I got the model that was i5, 256gb and mx150 dedicated graphics card. In terms of heat and fan noise, most of the time it is very quiet. I had a 2012 Air and the fans on the MX pro are much quieter. It does get relatively warm but nothing extreme. I would compare it to a phone that has been playing moderate power intensive games for 15mins or so. Battery life has been good a bit inconsistent at times. anywhere between 7-10hrs should be no problem depending on what you are doing. Speakers are really nice, touchscreen is great to have and overall a great laptop.

    • I preorderd it. The only thing that worries me a bit is the over heating comments and the fan noise. How noisy does it get? I hate laptops that have the fan going all the time.

      • I really dont think its that noisy. Much quieter than my 2012 air and my friend's laptop for normal tasks. The fan only bumps up for cpu demanding tasks

      • It's quite noisy when it's on the charger. Also when you first get it and it's indexing. If it's off the charger it's super quiet though.

    • I am tossing between the MBXP and the Surface Laptop 2. Thanks for doing this!

      Touchpad

      • How does the touchpad of the MBXP feel?
      • Would you say it's better or worse than Microsoft's touchpads on its Surface line?

      Build quality

      • How would you rate its build quality against an Apple Macbook Pro?
      • Does it feel better or worse to hold and touch the metal body as compared to the Apple MBP? To me, Apple's MBP has phenomenal build quality, e.g. when you hold it closed it feels as if you're holding a solid block of metal. The Apple MBP also feels very smooth and nice to touch.
      • Can you lift the screen with one finger without the base moving? Is it smooth?

      Thermals

      • How often does your MBXP's fan run?
      • When it does, do you hear the fan running?

      Known issues

      Again, thank you so much!

        1. Touchpad is great. Similar to the old macbook air/pro keyboards. Maybe a bit less click then the microsoft laptops but it has windows precision drivers and are fine coming from an 2012 air.

        2. Build quality is great for the most port. two grips I have is that the fingerprint scanner is a bit hit and miss for me and that the screen doesnt not go back very far. It feels very much like a MBP/MBA when you hold it. One hand lift is no problem.

        3. Fan is mostly quiet. As a student i normally browse the net, youtube, word processing and fan never kicks in unless its a 30degree sydney day or im playing games.

        4. ive only experienced coil whine when plugged in. However if you sitting up straight and typing you shouldnt be able to here it. If you put your ears near the keyboard then theres a tiny bit of coil whine. No coil whine when the laptop is not plugged into the AC.

I've had no issues with fingerprint recognition and I love the hold down for 1 sec when booting to auto-login to Win 10. I'm using an American i7 Variant so I don't know if that has different fingerprint hardware or anything.

I used to have no problems with the fan but lately it's kicking in while it's on charge (not sure why). I usually just use it off the charger and replug it when I'm not using it to avoid this.

I've found there's a weird HDD-Platter sound that comes from the keyboard. It's an issue if you spend your day with your ear next to the keyboard ;)

In terms of this or surface laptop 2, i would think that this one is a better buy in terms of value and features. Better speakers, screen and no alcantara which gets dirty far too easily especially for someone like me who gets alot of hand sweat.

        • Thanks mate. Appreciate the useful feedback!

        • Thank you for help! I have pre-ordered one!

As a bonus you get simplied sharing of your data with the Chinese government

  • Any green tint issue? Hehe

  • Does the i5 model come with MX150?

  • +2

    No more Space Grey :(

I know…. it got removed from my cart before I could complete checkout payment

  • Any guess on whether the price will fall further around boxing day/NY?

    • My guess would be possibly not because it is still low stock at US retailers like B&H

  • has anyone had any updates on their order? mine still says pending…

    • A lot of people are getting refunded due to no stock despite ordering when it showed stock..

      • Yep. I was one of those. If you call up and query your order, they will cancel your order and give you a $50 credit. I'm guessing that if you don't call, then they assume you will wait lol

  • OK, so my order was cancelled a few weeks ago, but somehow my card was just charged again for the device…. wth

  • It finally arrived today!
