    TN panel

    • I'm looking to buy a g sync 144hz 1440p monitor. Is it worth spending abit more for an IPS panel or going with this deal?

Go IPS with a local store so if you get one with bad backlight bleed, its easy to swap

        • i'm getting a bit of backlight bleed on my laptop. does that warrant a swap/refund?

          • @ayad: depends on how hard you want to argue the point

            • @payton: i suck at that stuff. i always feel bad and also that they won't trust me. whether i'm being truthful or slightly not xD

      • if you are asking such a question here, i think IPS is best bet for you

    • Yup! Forgot to mention that. I prefer TN myself.

      • Just out of curiosity, why? I can understand someone compromising for TN due to limited budget, ect. But preferring TN..?? Have you used an IPS panel before? Unless you're a competitive gamer I cant see why

Good TN panels are pretty good in terms of colour accuracy, just check the brands and reviews on them, Im using the dell s2716dg, The colours are pretty good straight outta the box, once calibrated definitely looks sharper, doesn't compare to oled though, ips for me isnt a big killer, besides the viewing angles, colours isnt a superior improvement and the back bleed issues is one of the Achilles heel of ips, all to their own though

            @Bargain4Days:

            No they aren't.

            colours isnt a superior improvement

Yes it is, that is literally the main reason people prefer IPS over TN.

            the back bleed issues

You mean compared to the all over worse black reproduction that TN features when it's working properly?

          • @Bargain4Days: Have the same moniter set it up right looks awesome from any angle you look at it. :)

I used to own a TN but now have an IPS, it looks slightly better but it doesn't have such a large edge over the TN for me. I'd be happier with a higher refresh rate, 1ms TN panel

@shazzyd: Currently using a Predator XB252Q next to a Predator X34 and TN looks like significantly worse because of weaker colour reproduction, banding and lower contrast with washed out grey being used for black.

Just a matter of personal preference I guess.
I don't need a good viewing angle as I'll be sitting dead straight in front of it while gaming, & I wanna avoid the IPS 'glow'. My brother got an IPS panel and it looked pretty bad. (He returned it and got a TN panel). Perhaps he just got a bad panel. And they're generally cheaper!

        • i have my TN(2411Z benq) and my trash samsung side by side (TN vs IPS).

unless the comparsion given a large amount of black color, I doubt you be able to tell which one is which, good TN beats bad IPS anyday.

ofc TN has to try really hard to beat the color category, but the price and performance is well worth it for me.

And also the washed out black is even better in competitive gaming for obvious reason.

but still, if everything is equal, i will still choose IPS.

IPS Backlight bleeding is a serious issue with IPS panels to this day. Yes even with high-end models like the Predator series using IPS technology. I can see why people would prefer TN because of that, Iam one of them

You realise TN panels have terrible black levels right?

          • @Diji1: terrible in comparison to what? i upgraded from a 12 year old Dell 24" LCD. a TN panel is miles ahead of what I had. i've seen IPS monitors and never once thought it was any better than my TN panel.

            kids these days

edit: lol having said that - just checked out my monitor online - it's an IPS (Dell U2717D)! when the screen is totally black or has no signal, i can see backlight glow? is that normal? i dont remember it on my old lcd

          • @Diji1: i guess you havnt used a TN in a long long time.

  • Any 27" recommendations circa $400??

  • Oops - doubled up on this comment.

I think TN should be avoided in favour of IPS unless you want to prioritise playing games where avoiding blur is important such as competitive shooters.

But even so I see there is IPS with ULMB now so perhaps that removes some/all of TNs advantage.

  • I bought this TN panel and had to return it within 4 days as there was excessive colour banding. it wasn't a one-off either its just how these specific TN panels are. ultra smooth but rubbish banding. swapped it for an IPS version. sure it has backlight bleed but only noticeable when you look for it or with a completely black background. would never go TN over IPS. with the TN the viewing angle is also extremely narrow even if you sit directly in front of it, there is a colour variation between the top of the screen and the bottom of the screen.
