ITINERARY

Day 1: Departure City – Adelaide

Your luxurious Aussie escape begins today with your domestic flight to Adelaide, where you will be transferred to your hotel.

Once checked-in, the afternoon is yours to relax and explore this affluent ‘City of Churches’; lose yourself in one of the hip bars tucked away in a tiny alleyway or take a dip in the cool waters of beachy Glenelg.

Day 2: Adelaide – Board the Ghan (L, D)

Get ready to experience all the comforts of your Gold Class cabin today as you board the spectacular Ghan. Once you’ve settled in and the big wheels start turning, make your way to the classically styled Queen Adelaide Restaurant carriage for a delicious lunch, accompanied by your choice of fine wines.

The afternoon is yours to relax, socialise and get acquainted with the novelty of rail travel. After a sumptuous dinner, join other guests for a few late-night drinks or head to your cabin to settle in early and await the sights of your first incredible outback sunrise the next day.

Passengers departing from Adelaide will make their own way to the station for a 12:15pm train departure today.

Day 3: The Centre (B, L, D)

Witness an unforgettable outback sunrise with a steaming cup of coffee this morning and a brief stop in Marla. Back onboard, sink into pure indulgence in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant for brunch and relax as the mallee scrub makes way for the iconic outback scenery of Alice Springs.

Off-board, spend the afternoon at leisure; you could visit local landmarks, take a front row seat a spectacular bird show at the Desert Park or experience a majestic camel ride across ochre land. Back on the train, get to know your fellow passengers in the Outback Explorer Lounge before freshening up for dinner – topped off with a cheeky night cap, of course!

Day 4: Katherine – Darwin (B, L)

Welcome to Katherine! Upon reaching the Northern Territory gaze in wonder at towering sandstone cliffs as you cruise lazily on the Katherine River. Alternatively, spend the day with the local Aboriginal people, sharing their culture, learning to basket weave, spear throw and play the Didgeridoo.

A late lunch awaits back on board, then relax with a glass of fine wine and savour the last few hours of this epic journey as you roll into Darwin at 5:30pm. Transfer to your hotel, and ease back into life on the land with a bit of harbour exploration.

Day 5: Darwin – Jumping Crocodiles Tour & Cruise

Kick back this morning as you slow down to Darwin-time and enjoy the quiet-serenity with an Adelaide River cruise, then keep your cameras at the ready as you get up close and personal with saltwater crocodiles – watch as they leap out of the water to capture their prey!

Day 6: Depart for Home

Your outback expedition comes to an end today. Transfer to the airport for your flight home with a head and heart full of magical memories to cherish.

B = Breakfast, L = Lunch, D = Dinner

So unless you're going in the wet season, there's a $700 surcharge? I wonder why people holiday overseas?

Yep, a pretty expensive ride in a box, with the occasional leg stretch. Surely u get an included BJ every morning?

The Ghan from Alice Springs to Darwin (2011-03) to this day is still my worst holiday experience for the cost… we went Platinum and Gold class… they wouldn't even help my 84 yo father in law on the train, some kind of union BS, food was crap, rooms were awful and every panel creaked and rattled the the way. I couldn't use the toilet bcos my legs were too long.
It could be forgiven for $200, but we paid 10x each person.
Oh and did I mention there's NOTHING to see… trees and red earth hour after hour.

    • ha what did you think you were going to see.
it goes through the effen desert.

plus there would be an indigenous tax for the right to travel through.

So it was more a life experience than a holiday. lol

      poor form with the elder.

The drive from Alice Springs to Uluru was more interesting… and Uluru was pretty awesome too here's a pic I took https://goo.gl/wjRChL

        • Hey raybies,
Very nice Photo impressive. wouldn't have thought it could have so much greenery.

        • Your other photos are very good. You are quite talented.

You sound like a whinging Brit.

      • You need to get your hearing fixed, bcos it makes you sound like a fool.
None of us were Brits and all of us thought it was total waste of money and couldn't wait to leave.

Put in context $2kpp a day on the Ghan vs 4 months later $3.4kpp for 8 days in a proper ~luxury cabin (Aqua class) on Celebrity Equinox Venice > Istanbul.

Celebrity 9/10 [Recommended], awesome food, awesome coffee and cake, awesome cocktails, awesome scenery, awesome service…
Ghan 0.01/10 for the 1 complementary drink they gave us after spending >$13k.

I read they refurbish in 2017.

        $350pp catamaran Whitsundays, fantastic.
        $250pp camping Fraser Island, awesome.

    • trees and red earth hour after hour.

I have to agree there - I watched maybe a couple hours of the 17 hours of The Ghan. Even free, I could not really watch the whole journey.

But got to say, this is just scenery for 17 hours, no footage within the carriages themselves. Whereas passengers will have distraction, like dining, sleeping etc.
