Stanley 44 Piece 1/4" Metric / A/F Drive Socket Set $29.98 @ Bunnings

1310

Well I won’t bore you with the detail of this set since there was a post about it a week ago but it seems Bunnings just down the price to $29.85. Not sure it’s a price error or not, feel like a steal at this price.

I just ordered one online it did say was on special order but 100% let me completed the order. So happy days!

    • Yep, just got the same phone call and offer. I'm gonna take up this offer. 3/8th's is better for me.

  • +3

Price wise, decent upgrade/substitute. Cant comment on practical differences since I dont even know why I bought the 44 pc set

FWIW, SCA sells the substitute 42 pc set for $85.50

*cudos to Bunnings for sorting this out relatively quickly

    • I wouldn't call this relatively quickly.
I ordered it on the 15th, they discounted it again on the 24th. They were already out of stock because they couldn't fill the existing orders - nobody was ever able to buy this item for $29.98.
Now it's taken another week before they sent out-of-stock notifications due to "unforeseen high demand" (my order had an ETA of last monday).

I was meant to hand off xmas presents to relatives this weekend (won't see them again before xmas), now I have to go buy gift cards because Bunnings screwed up.

  • Thank you for recently placing your online order with Bunnings for a Stanley 44 piece socket set. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen high demand this item is unavailable. As a substitute we would like to offer a Stanley 42 piece socket set with a superior 3/8” drive at no additional cost. See attached a comparison of the product ordered and the replacement offered.
Please reply to this email to confirm if you are happy with the replacement and we will complete your order as soon as possible. Alternatively, please let us know if you do not wish to go ahead and we will process a refund for you.
Once again, thank you for shopping online with Bunnings.
    Kind regards,
    Lauren Wilson

    I accepted of cause :)

    Just got this,

I guess for $30 I may as well?

I wonder how it is superior

  • +2

Got my upgrade email too. I was actually after a 3/8 set so cha ching!

  • I have more use for the high socket sizes than the 4,5,6 and 7 mm sizes so I am happy. I did pay the higher price from previous deal though so not sure if I can still call up to get refunded the difference given that the item is expired…

    • CSR happily did it for me when I mentioned that I have purchased at the $30 price too. Even though there was no item on the website. Just provide the new Invoice number so they can compare to the older, more expensive one.

  • Can someone provide an objective assessment of the difference:

    1. The one we ordered https://sydneytools.com.au/product/stanley-89536-44pce-14-me…
    2. The replacement offered https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/stanley-stanley-socket-s…
    • +3

A lot of ppl's objective assessment wouldn't go much further than:

      $85.50 - $69.90 = $15.60 = SCORE!

    • +1

Want to work on a lot of small fittings then 1/4" will probably be better. 3/8s is a good compromise size for most auto work up to 20mm or so or anything not requiring high torque.

I would have preferred the original 1/4" set as I already have good larger sets but occasionally need small deep sockets for chainsaws etc.

If this is your first socket set the 3/8 is a no brainer winner.

  • +2

Disappointed to miss out on the 1/4" socket set as it was what I actually wanted, but no point crying over spilled milk so will take up the alternative offer as it will find a purpose and is still a value offer. Good that Bunnings did at least offer a viable choice.

    • +2

True, probably would have been easier for them to just offer a refund.

But they at least came back with an equal to or greater value than orginal purchase. Honouring the spirit of the deal.

  • Also got the offer

Is the replacement set as good if not better? I can see it's more expensive

edit: I accepted the offer. Good on Bunnings.

  • Yeah, got the replacement offer as well and accepted it. I had no specific requirement for the 1/4" socket set, rather than that it was on sale, so this replacement set is even sweeter as it's more expensive. I'm sure I'll need it for something at some point.

  • I'm much happier with the replacement set. I've already got a few 1/4" socket sets and had no real use for the original set. I can definitely make use of deep 3/8" sockets though - don't even own any (well, I do now I guess).

  • Ebay's gonna be flooded with these 3/8" sets.

    • I think most people will keep/use it

  • +1

Wow. Looks like I was the only one on here that actually got the original 44 socket set. I ordered on the 15th Nov for the previous $45 deal, and got a $15 refund.

I got my pick up email this morning, and went and got the set. Pretty stoked with it.

  • Wonder how long it will take to get the 3/8" set

    • +4

Just spoke to online ordering team they said it will be in store ready to pickup on Tuesday or Wednesday. They will be sending the confirmation email on Monday.

      • Did you get the confirmation email, mate? Since that replacement offer email haven't heard from Bunnings again.

        • No reply mate . I just spoke to them again and they said somebody will be contacting me first thing in the morning tomorrow regarding the issue .

          • @xXxRoMeOxXx: Any news yet? I emailed them a few days ago and got no response.

            • +1

@seanneko: No callback No reply to the email. I just rang them again and guy over the phone said they sent 900 socket sets to stores all over the country you will be getting one soon .

            • @seanneko: Update :- I checked the stock level at my local Bunnings for 42 piece socket set (replacement for 44 piece)which they have plenty in stock and I rang back Bunnings online ordering team and asked if I can pickup at my local Bunnings they already got stock on hand…? the guy over the phone put me on hold for few minutes and confirmed yes I can .

Walked into my local Bunnings and guess what socket set waiting for me behind the counter .

              • @xXxRoMeOxXx: Thanks for the info. Strange they're not just doing that automatically. Seems like every single store around my area has stock of it too.

              • @xXxRoMeOxXx: Think I'll call my local today… they have stock

              • @xXxRoMeOxXx: I called their customer service number this morning (about an hour and half ago) and the guy on the phone told me the staff at my local store weren't picking up the phone (we were talking in less than half a minute so he didn't even put me on hold) so he will get them to call me as soon as possible. Haven't heard from them yet. He straight away was trying to get rid of me as he tried to tell me the stores couldn't fulfill orders because they're out of stock. I pointed out to him all the local stores have stock of the replacement set and I even gave him the item number from their own site. I think Bunnings messed up in this deal and won't honor most of the orders. They shouldn't have offered replacement and should have refunded people last week if that's the direction they're heading now.

                • +1

@AussieDaddy: Just double checking Are you ringing on 1800 797 586…? If yes they shouldn’t be refusing .if they still refuse ask for supervisior.

                  • @xXxRoMeOxXx: Yeah, that's t the one I called. And I've just tried it again, and a lady answered (probably the one you talked to yesterday) and she told she would leave a note in my order and I can go pick it up from the store. Hopefully the staff won't give me hard time. Thanks for the help. :)

                • @AussieDaddy: Maybe they're not so keen to offload them cheaply now that Supercheap has increased their price from $85 to $114.

                  • @ssquid: That might be the case. I picked mine up this evening and the guy who gave it to me was in disbelief when he saw the price. He asked if I saw the deal posted online (he didn't mention OzBargain but it was self-evident lol). I only got the 'Ready for pickup' email after I picked it up. I think they'll try to stonewall and drag their feet re this item as long as they can, hoping that some people will request a refund rather than selling it for this very low price.

                    • @AussieDaddy: Uh uh, no refund for me. Im just gonna wait until my order is upgraded to a gold plated set.

Unless of course, they just cancel the order.

                      • @X3: If you accepted the replacement offer then do what xXxRoMeOxXx suggested here and give them a call (if you haven't already) asking to pick it up from your nominated store if it has stock.

                      • @X3: I'm seriously tempted to ask them to throw in a breaker bar to make up for the delays.

                        • @ssquid: Now you're pushing it. Haha

                          • @AussieDaddy: I just walked into my local store and asked if they could give it to me on the spot without even bothering to call customer service.

After looking up my order details, she was happy to let me take one off the shelf. My order had a note attached to it saying something about "waiting for replacement stock to arrive so there's no loss to the business". She laughed at that and said who even cares.

                            • @seanneko: That's amazing. I picked mine up yesterday. The staff member in my local store was kinda new and took for a while to read the note attached to my order so for a minute I thought he was gonna turn me down and tell me to wait for the 'ready for pickup' email or something. Was relieved when he left his desk and got it for me. :)

  • Has anyone got a 'ready to pick up' email for the replacement set from Bunnings yet? Replied to the email last week that I would take the replacement but haven't heard from them since.

    • No, not yet.

    • Yeah, still waiting as well.

    • +2

Spoke to them this arvo, couldnt give any idea on an ETA but did mention they had sent out over 3000 exchange offers!! wonder how many were ex OZB?

      • Cheers. Was just thinking to email them, so this will save me some time. And yeah, definitely a big percentage, if not all of them, are from this sale. haha

      • Thanks for update. But over 3000, I'm gobsmacked the number is so high regardless of the OZB factor. That being the case, I'm kind of surprised Bunning's didn't just refund…

        • +1

If nobody has yet received their replacement set, maybe Bunnings expected most people to take refunds and we're about to get another email citing "unprecedented demand".

  • OzB mentality :-

"Hmmm, so now Bunnings might run out of replacement stock, they may opt to replace the replacement with an even better set" Bam!

    • ETA 2020. Gradually gets upgraded to a 104 piece kit.

To then be given original refund..

Meanwhile I put my projects around the house on hold..

To then go out & buy the original set RRP which has gone up with inflation..

  • Organised via customer service to pick up my replacement this morning. Even though Bunnings needed a little nudge along via a phone call, I must say, at least on this occasion, they were all good to deal with and the replacement set is a good solid value one.

  • Picked mine up tonight just took my phone with emails they sent offering free upgrade to special orders desk in middle of bunnings and he sorted it out walked out with the $105 set for $30 not bad.

  • I was just on hold, on the landline, to the Bunnings 1800 no. to enquire about my order when my mobile rang. It was the local Bunnings saying they had some of the replacement socket sets and did I want them to put one aside. Collecting later today!

  • My local store accidentally refunded my order. Went in there yesterday. They had stock.

Eventually walked out with a set <$30

That’s a whole of value for <$30. Great set!

  • Forgot about this. Just emailed Bunnings to see how the new set is going

    • Go into your local. They most likely have them in stock.

  • Went to pick up my set today.

It was kinda weird for me, the lady seemed not to know what to do, and in fact, offered to give me a totally different set that was worth 25% more on the already upgraded substitute! It was tempting but no, conscience reigned and I pointed out the correct set.

The funny thing is, an hour after pickup, I then got an email to go pickup another set. Again, that pesky conscience won out.

Note: For those that havent gone to get theirs, go straight to the "Special Orders" desk

    • I had the same issue. No one knew where to go for click & collect/ online orders.

Ended up at the special orders desk. Which they still were not too sure what to do.

I don't think online orders are very common because most of the staff didn't realise they had the option.

      • +2

Yeah, looks like click and collect is not that much of a thing at Bunnings.

Side note : the lady looked at the invoice and instantly had a stroke - "how come you only paid $29.65!!!!".

        • Haha, Yep. I had the same remark/ query about the price

          • @stickymoo: Did he/she stroke out as well ?

            • @X3: Yep. I had to resuscitate her.

              Now we are engaged

      • -1

They're specifically called "special orders" on the website.

    • I think the collection email is actually triggered by them manually marking it as in-stock/collected, I got one too with a timestamp that matched when I was in store sorting it out.

  • So are people ringing up their local Bunnings or their customer service first before going to the store, or just rocking up with email in hand and heading straight to the Special Orders desk?

    • +1

Just rock up, check if there's stock on the shelf and if so head to special orders with the order printout and ask to collect.

You can check stock levels for your local store on the website before making the trip.

(If you try to take the items to the special orders desk the staff in the tool shop can get agro…)

      • The only order printout I have is for the original 44-piece 1/4" socket set, have not gotten any correspondence from them since I've accepted the replacement offer, will that be suffice?

        • +1

Yeah, they just need the order no. (should be in the top right corner). All the details should be there when they bring it up on their PC.

  • Got an email today to come and collect the 42 piece set…

    • Wow really nice set and I can't believe they gave me a set worth $105 for $30, they could have just refunded the money.

      • +2

When companies do good things like this, it's literally burned into my memory banks and I make a concerted effort to give them my business.

On the flip side, Hardly Normal is beyond dead to me :)

        • I like it better when companies don't make mistakes in the first place rather than fix them properly.

This "bargain" was a major screw-up, they didn't have enough stock to fill the first lot of orders (for $45) then a week later they dropped the price again? They would have got done for bait-and-switch for sure if they hadn't offered a decent replacement item.

          • @ssquid: The better price a week later is because of competitor pricing.

            Nothing to do with Bunnings

            • @stickymoo: If they didn't have enough stock to cover existing orders they had no reason to match the lower price.

              • @ssquid: Meh, shit happens.

They went above & beyond. I’m pretty sure surpassing most expectations

I don’t see it as a “mistake” or a “screw-up” like you do

          • @ssquid: But mistakes inevitably occur right, it's the way that businesses fix it that matters.

Like with the Appliances Online boo boo with their Kitchenaid Mixer price crash (computer glitch) - they took the high road and chose to honour the price, now THAT'S what I call intestinal fortitude.

As a result, I am unequivocal in my praise of businesses like these - the many many friends I've told will testify to that :) I also kinda like it when businesses dont simply give customers the middle finger (like ol' Hardly Normal)

      • whoops double post
