    Great deal!

    • Not as good as last Xmas
when they were free at JB hifi
      😉

      • altho I bought some vac bags
at the same time ( price matched )

It's cheaper for me to go to Coles, buy one of these, refer it from my existing account (to get $20 credit) and then gift the 30GB of data I would get than it is to just pay my normal monthly fee with Belong?

    …I guess I should?

    • Exactly what I've been doing for months. You actually make money on the deal ($5)

      • +1

How does this work again without porting out? I totally forgot. I'm currently on the $10 a month plan and it sucks as I run out of data half way through.

          • Activate the new one using PayPal as the payment method and your referral code from your main account, on the $40 plan
          • Buy 4GB data with the free $20 on the new card ($10/2GB)
          • Gift the data from the new card to your main number
          • Cancel the new card
          • Cancel the payment authorisation in PayPal (don't accidentally cancel the payment authorisation for your main number!!)

Try to complete all this within 24 hours from first activating the new card so you are less likely to accidentally get auto-renewed.

          • +3

@Quantumcat: And the date you do this is influential as well.

            Read this…
            https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/belongmobile

          • @Quantumcat: Thanks. I'll give it a go.

          • @Quantumcat: So there is no way to cancel with a credit card, only paypal?

            • @bobvegas: I am not certain, but I think with a credit card you would have to rely on them cancelling it when you submit a request to cancel. The benefit of PayPal is you are in control there. Maybe you could ring up your bank and cancel that way, but I've never tried it.

          • +1

@Quantumcat: FYI - I just tried this. You can't buy top-up data with the free $20 referal credit.

          • @Quantumcat: Cool. Thanks, Quantumcat.

Try to complete all this within 24 hours from first activating the new card so you are less likely to accidentally get auto-renewed

I'm not sure what this means, or what the consequences are. Any chance you could explain it further? Thanks.

            • @surethang: Have a look at what TightBottom linked.

              • @Quantumcat: Thanks. Yeah, that's what I read and why I'm confused by what you wrote.

From my reading, we have up to 38 days before any renewal issues could occur.

Also, if I cancel the account instead of waiting for the first billing period (could be up to 8 days), I can only gift 15 GB instead of the full 30 GB.

What am I missing here? What does cancelling quickly help avoid and how? Thanks again.

                • @surethang: You don't have 38 days, your first renewal usually happens within 2-5 days of activation.

                  Billing and Payments
Plans are billed on the same date monthly. Initial billing dates are every 8 days (e.g. 4th, 12th, 20th, 28th May 2018)

So for example if you activate on the 11th you'll get billed on the 12th, so you will want to finish activating, transferring the data, and cancelling the PayPal authorisation before the next day otherwise you'll get charged $40.

Also what do you mean the full 30GB? You'll only have 30GB if you have renewed once (paid an extra $40).

                  • @Quantumcat: Ok, I think I see where the confusion is now.

The starter pack you're buying comes with $40 of credit which can be used to pay for the first month. So when the first billing date arrives, yes, you get charged $40 for the month, but you have $40 of credit from the starter pack to pay for it. My Belong payment summary page even says "Applied credit $40. Next payment $0. Due 20 December 2018"

Thanks for responding to help clear this up for me.

                    • @surethang:

No I don't think that's right, when I first signed up to mine I got charged a couple of days after activating. You don't get a whole month to start with (but the data rolls over so it isn't so bad). That message you mentioned would make sense if you are on a $10/month plan. Mine also says that, cause I referred someone recently (have $20 in credit).

                      • @Quantumcat: Dang. That sucks.

Seems crazy that we get $40 credit, but can't actually use it on anything.

That message you mentioned would make sense if you are on a $10/month plan

It says I'm on the $40 plan.

Mine also says that, cause I referred someone recently (have $20 in credit).

Referral credit doesn't appear on the Belong Payment Summary page (https://www.belong.com.au/account/mobile/payments). If it did, I would have $60 credit total ($40 starter kit + $20 referral). I also checked on my girlfriend's account. She has $20 referral credit listed on the History page (https://www.belong.com.au/account/mobile/service/history), but her Payment Summary still says "Next payment $10. Due 4 January 2019." It only gets accounted for on the actual invoice.

Also the original commenter above, @tellhimhesdreaming mentions the 30 GB data figure. (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/6713175/redir). It's also on mentioned on earlier OzBargain Belong deals, and on Whirlpool forum discussions.

If your PayPal account or credit card got charged $40 and you have $40 credit, I'd be disputing that with Belong. Either way, I'll find out what happens on the 20th :)

Cheers again for all your help.

You can use it to activate

Hmm well then I wonder what this is? https://ibb.co/qj4sSrJ

If your PayPal account or credit card got charged $40 and you have $40 credit

Except you don't because you used it when you activated and started the service

Also the original commenter above, @tellhimhesdreaming mentions the 30 GB data figure. (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/6713175/redir). It's also on mentioned on earlier OzBargain Belong deals, and on Whirlpool forum discussions.

That was a double data promotion https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/333114

                          • @Quantumcat: So you're saying the $0 on first billing date and double data bonus as per https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/belongmobile are no longer valid? This affects my plans/fantasies.

Can anyone else chime in here?

                            • @peterpeterpumpkin: That's interesting, that didn't happen for me (free between activation and billing date). I wonder if they changed it

                            • @peterpeterpumpkin: It's confusing as hell. I just blew $10 through Paypal trying to use the free $20 credit to add more data after gifting the initial 1GB. I think I was supposed to transfer the initial 1GB, then wait a month for the next payment and they'd use the credit then transfer that 1GB and so on. I also stupidly chose the 1GB plan though.

                            • +1

@peterpeterpumpkin: I can confirm that my girlfriend, a friend, and myself all experienced exactly what is described on https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/belongmobile

The time between activation and the next available billing date is "free".

One month worth of data is credited on activation, and another on your first payment date, 1-8 days later

So you effectively get double data for the first monthly payment

The $15 starter pack got me 15 GB on activation, plus 15 GB on the first billing day yesterday.

My PayPal account hasn't been charged $40, as happened with @quantumcat, so there's no need to cancel before the first billing date.

          • @Quantumcat: Wasted $10 trying to follow this advice. Don’t try to use the $20 credit to top-up data.

            • @Specialist Diaz: Unfortunately I couldn't edit my response. Someone else found this out too:

FYI - I just tried this. You can't buy top-up data with the free $20 referal credit.

You could use the remaining $10 still to pay for 1 month, and get 1GB of data to gift (as long as you set a reminder to cancel it so you don't accidentally get charged any of your real money). That's a bit rough they took $10 credit and didn't give you anything!!!

      • Finally went to Coles and thankfully Sims are still only $15. Seems so ridiculous doing this but definitely worth it. $20 credit and 30GB of data for $15 and 5 mins of effort.

    • How do you get 30gb with this?

      • +2

You get 15gb on initial activation, and then 15gb on your first billing date. So make sure you activate at least a day before their billing cycle dates.

        • Thanks.

        • Although this is clearly how it's been for a while, Quantumcat above (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/424266#comment-6734218) says it appears his account was charged upon activation.

          Please confirm:
You activated your retail $40 SIM for free on a $40 plan.
You now have 15 GB of data and all the inclusions.
Your account, upon login, is still in credit for $40.

If the above is true, on the next billing date (20th of December), we expect:
$40 to be deducted from your account credit.
An extra 15 GB of data to be credited to your account.

You then have until the next billing date (20 January 2019) to cancel your new post-paid SIM without incurring any extra costs, or, change your new post-paid SIM to $10 a month for 2 months before cancelling (to score an extra 2 GB), or actually pay $5 extra for a $25 plan for 1 month (before cancelling) to accrue 5 GB extra.

  • when does the credit expire on these sims?

    • 12 Months from date of Purchase

  • +1

Don't forget to use the ozbargain referral system!

    • +8

I think most people are referring themselves lol

      • When you refer yourself, do you know if you need to create another account (login) or can you still refer yourself using multiple SIMs on the single account?

  • If i was to buy this, is this all I need to pay for 12 months of service with 15GB of data?
Or do i still need to add one of the SIM plans at a minimum $10 per month?

    • The $40 starter kit basically charges $40 credit to your new account and you can subscribe to a $10(1GB) monthly plan for four months from that. Belong does not have 365-day plan afaik.

  • Do I get 15gb in the first month and then 1gb per month if u subscribe to the 10dollar plan or only get 1gb per month

    • 15gb is for the $40 plan.
      1gb is the $10 plan
Even if you get this $40 kit you can choose whatever plan u want.

      They also have a 5gb $25 plan

You only get 1gb if u sub to the $10 plan

      • Do you need to go on a plan after buying this Kit?
Cant you just use this kit as it includes 15GB data and unlimited calls and text and expires in 356 days?

Sorry for the noob questions, I usually do post paid phone bundles.
Looking for a plan for my daughter going into highschool next year

        • If you want 15GB data you'll be going on the $40/month plan and get unlimited calls and texts only for 1 month. Or go on the $10/month plan and have unlimited calls/texts for 4 months.

          • +1

@Quantumcat: Thanks for all the replies, you guys have cleared up a lot for me.

I totally misunderstood this. I thought you buy the SIM which is preloaded with 15GB data and $40 credit and that you could use the $40 credit anyway you see fit (eg 4x $10 month plans)

  • it is not a prepaid, so you cant keep your number without paying monthly.

  • If I bought 2 could I use them for 8 months access on the $10 plan?

    • +1

Depends on if you don't care what your number is or what to keep your number

      • So these kits don’t expire if I was to buy 3?
Using it for a hotspot for a single device so don’t care about numbers.

  • Do they have expiry date?

    • Yes they do have an expiry
      12 months from purchase date.

      • Didn't know this. Just had a look a couple of SIMS I bought a few months ago during the Australia post sale - SIM production date 6/9/2017, more than a year ago!
I guess the activation of the SIM that occurs when it's bought at retail is recorded somewhere and used for the expiry date.

        • Yes, you are right. The activation starts when purchase. You can see the self-serve machine showing a status of "Activating…" after payment is made.

  • how long is the credit valid once you activate the sim?

    • 1 month or 4 months depending on PLAN picked
      Tis a postpaid plan afterall.

  • Has this expired? Can’t see in current catalogue?

    • Possibly expired -as we moved to a new Coles catalogue on wed 12th.

    • +1

I don't think it is expired, the discount cardboard wrapping the SIM folder was designed like a retail product, ie longlife, it will be likely while stock last.

  • I bought one this evening in Canberra and it was still on special for $15.

  • just bought 2 at coles. $15 each.

  • does anyone know if these can be stacked?… id like to buy 3 of these just use the $10 plan…

which should give me a years worth if i can stack the credit

    • even if they can not be, you can buy data in the classified section for $1 gb

      • I think their intention was to avoid paying $10 per month and pay $3.75/month instead (which is actually $2.50/month with referral bonus).

        • that's what i want to do for my household which makes 6 months on $10 plan around $2-$3($40+$20 voucher)..biggest issue for me is porting out after 6 months, hearing people having issue require to call them to cancel something…doesn't let you remove cc or disable auto-renew…

          • @apokalypsez: Although I haven't reached that stage yet to prove it works, I used PayPal for this reason. Just cancel the Paypal auto-deduction permission as soon as you sign-up.

Then when you port out and back in again just use a new email address to avoid account clashes at least at the email level.

          • @apokalypsez: did they do it correctly? you need to use the billing number, this is actually a prepaid postpaid service apparently.

also good luck calling them, no humens on that support line when i called.

    • Just to clarify:

With the $20 referral you would actually get $60 not $40, so you'd get 6 months x $10.

Technically, you could order free SIMs to your house every 2 months to get the $20 referral bonus to yourself (do it from the beginning and never pay a cent). But it may be less hassle to port out for a bit and port back in on another $40 pack for $15 (to get another 6 months).

      • so you don't need to add any credit to the free cards if you have a referral?

I have one activated account and a free sim card i ordered.

        • Exactly. Unless it's changed in the last month.

      • can you Explain like i'm five? i'm aware about the beginning activation part when i first joining but after that get another 6 months…

        • I'm out right now so can't type much, but if you want to get another 6 months with a starter pack then you'll need to port out to another company in 6 months and then port back in with a referral.

You can also get 2 months ($20) at a time just referring people, which can be yourself (e.g. ordering a free SIM online).

Note that this is all theoretical to me since I haven't reached that stage yet. They might not send you more than 1 SIM to your address for all I know.

        • the free sim is worth $40, $20 for that sim and $20 for the referal (you).

  • Are these still available?

    • Just wondering the same thing.

      • FYI I picked one up yesterday for $15

    • current catalogue shows $25 for $10

      • you can still get the $40 for $15 . purchased today 15/1/2018 to bad the activation service is down so i can not port my number
