    Steggles Fresh Chicken Wholebird

    What was the slaughter date?

    • +6

They have a pen out the back and slaughter on demand.

    • Their still live!

      • +3

        They're*

As a rule, about 14 days before the use by date. Chicken is sold to the retailer with a minimum seven days to go in it's shelf life. I imagine these would have even more shelf life as they would be made specifically for this promotion.

Source: work at a chicken factory.

      • depends on the factory and processing.

        • You really know your fowl.

      • These Steggles ones have a longer shelf life as they are injected with brine.

        Source: I'm a chicken expert.

        • Pretty much all whole birds are, usually with a brine to salt it or with an actual marinade/seasoning

  • Tequila is a good price

    Dominion

These taste pretty good, heaps of flavour.

    • +1

These taste pretty good, heaps of flavour sugar.

      • But they are Dominion Natural surely they are good for me :D

  • How are their chickens in terms of taste compared to Coles and woolies? I never go to Aldi (too far) so I don't know.

    • Same, Coles and Woolies don't produce their own.

Almost all chickens in Australia come from Steggles, Ingham and Baiada.

  • If you buy these, you better be struggling financially. A poor chickens life is worth far more than around 5 dollars. Choose certified free-range peeps!

    • +3

Your chicken don't pay my rent.

    • You do realise you're taking a free range chicken life ?. How much is this chickens life worth?

  • For 3 measly dollars:

    • Pumped with antibiotics
    • Fed GMO grains doused in toxic glyphosate (round up weed killer)
    • Horribly living conditions

    Better options:

    • Woolies Macro Organic (Rebadged Inglewood i think)
    • Inglewood Organics (Coles)
    • The Bare Bird (Coles). Not fed organic feed but is at least 100% antibiotic free.

      Pumped with antibiotics

Nonsense, antobiotics are not used to rear chickens in Australia.

The large size is due to selective breeding.

        • That's for backyard and show poultry, not commercial.

@zappa: What are you on about,, I've already posted that link below.

              Try reading it.

              • @Scab: This is what you wrote - "Nonsense, antobiotics are not used to rear chickens in Australia."

                Try reading it yourself mate.

                • -2

@zappa: That link says that antibiotics aren't used.

I even posted a paragraph in bold.

Reading is not your strong suite, or you're trolling.

      • -1

Wrong, wrong, wrong and also WRONG.

        • Yes, you are wrong, wrong and wrong.

"By regulation, no hormones or steroids are administered to chickens under any circumstance. Contrary to urban legend, the administration of hormones to chickens both in Australia and around the world has been illegal for over 40 years."

          • @Scab: You said and i quote:

"Nonsense, antobiotics are not used to rear chickens in Australia."

            antobiotics

A contention you've supported with the following quote:

"By regulation, no hormones or steroids are administered to chickens under any circumstance. Contrary to urban legend, the administration of hormones to chickens both in Australia and around the world has been illegal for over 40 years."

            Reading the quote again:

            "hormones or steroids"

Perhaps now is the time to tell you that antibiotics, hormones and steroids are not interchangeable terms for the same thing.

If you read a little further down your own link:

            "Antibiotics

Chicken meat produced in Australia is healthy and nutritious, and eating it does not expose consumers to either antibiotic residues, or bacteria resistant to antibiotics used in human medicine. This is because, firstly, antibiotics are used in a way that ensures the meat is free of residues. Withholding periods, designed to ensure there is no residue left in the meat at the time of processing, are observed at all times.

Secondly, antibiotics are used in a prudent way to minimise the development of resistance. "

              • @WatchNerd: How exactly did i prove my own comment by wrong?

                • @inittobinit: The quote you linked to basically says the opposite of them being pumped with antibiotics.

Also this deal is not 3 measly dollars, it's $3.00 per kg.

                  • @WatchNerd: If the internet said that they don't use very much antibiotics is must be true right? Who would lie on the internet.

I might also add any statements made on that website are intended solely to represent the subject and no one else. Just because one company says it exercises 'prudent' administration of antibiotics, doesn't mean every one else shares the same operative philosophy.

The extent of use is so bad that antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria are becoming a serious problem world wide.

@inittobinit: That link says nothing about Steggles chickens being "pumped with antibiotics". It even specifically says that your comment is wrong, see here -

Globally, the livestock sector had been one of the biggest offenders in overusing antibiotics, particularly pig and poultry farmers.

"[That's] because they are grown indoors and in an intensive way," Dr Schipp said.

"There has been use of antibiotics overseas in those industries. In Australia that is not the case. There are very few antibiotics that are registered for growth promotion."

  • Dam u got me thought it was only $3, miss read it shame it’s by the Kg.

    • me too.

      • +1

Not sure where you shop because I have never seen whole chickens sold at one price, it's always per kg.

        • But could be special promotion- like a chicken giveaway.

        • I have never seen whole chickens sold at one price,

Coles and Woolies sell whole BBQ chickens at the one price.
