P5OFF

Hi guys, I was looking for a new TV tuner for an old TV, and realised that this is pretty much the cheapest free to air TV tuner you can buy, and it comes with the added bonus of the Foxtel Now app. IT was $99 yesterday, but dropped to $59 today.

how does it compare to the Vodafone TV?

    • +5

I got both. Sideloaded Foxtel onto Vodafone tv and oddly runs far better than this. Though does the job. Can not get Netflix on this however. My opinion is to Get the Vodafone tv over this.

      • How did you sideload foxtel? Where did you download the apk?

        • google :)

        • Whirlpool forum.
I use version 1.3.5 (on a vodafone tv), but I just noticed 1.4.4 has been recently released (I haven't downloaded this yet). There are a number of apk files for other streaming apps as well.

  • Is it just standard Chromecast? Would be a really good purchase if it's a Chromecast Ultra (doubtful) so we can stream Kayo.

    • It has chromecast and can output 4K. Whether it outputs chromecast in 4K I don't know for sure.

Kayo doesn't offer 4K anyway though.

      "4K capable Chromecast built-in"

      https://www.techradar.com/au/reviews/foxtel-now-box
      "4K Chromecast functionality"

I'd say it does have 4k Chromecast

      • +2

4k (and 8k for that matter) has been proven to be indistinguishable to 1080p on a 75inch panel at greater than 2m, which is closer than anyone views them.

Marketing +1. Pointless. It'll use 3-4 times the bandwidth too (4k).

        • Got a link for this? Display ninja says no discernible difference for more than 3m viewing on a 75" 4k.

    • Does the Vodafone TV act as a Chromecast Ultra or non Ultra?

  • cheapest FTA TV tuner? You can find $26 boxes on eBay

    • -1

It’s not designed as an FTA tv tuner. It’s designed for Foxtel on demand (Foxtel now) customers.

      • +1

I know what this box does and it IS also designed for FTA TV(Access free-to-air TV^^Requires Free to Air aerial connected to Foxtel Now box) . I was just commenting the OP's description "and realised that this is pretty much the cheapest free to air TV tuner you can buy". So, if you only need a digital terrestrial TV tuner, there are cheaper alternatives, that's all

  • This would be more locked down tho?

  • +1

This is painful for FTA as it's embedded in the Foxtel channels. A cheap laser SD box box from big W would be better if you only want FTA.

This will offer Chromecast though and can sideload some apps. The Vodafone one overall gets a better rating.

  • Does Kayo run off this too?

    • +1

Not at this stage. You could probably cast it via your phone to this.

      • Funny how Foxtel are so shit they can’t even support their own devices.

  • Can I use my foxtel cable login details to watch foxtel on this?

    • +1

The Foxtel Now box is to be used in conjunction with a subscription to our streaming service called Foxtel Now, which is a different service to the Foxtel cable/satellite TV subscription. Requires a Foxtel Now Account to activate and use.
The Foxtel Now box does not work in conjunction with a regular Foxtel broadcast subscription and does not act as a multi-room or a substitute for a multi-room.
Please visit www.foxtelnow.com.au/box for more info.

I've had one of these for almost a year. I haven't been a paid subscriber for months but still use it for the free Sky News feed and other downloaded apps like YouTube and FTA catch-up apps.

However, last week's update locked me out. You can no longer access Sky News or any downloaded apps, you are stuck on the login screen, they are basically behind the paywall now.

I've contacted Fox support to see if they can unlock the free functions as before. If not I will be demanding a refund because it is a paperweight for non-subscribers.

Wow! That’s next level dickery and surely illegal.

      • I've sent their customer support a message. If they don't fix, which I don't think they will as this looks by design, I will demand a refund as product use is not as advertised.

        • +1

Yeah don’t let them get away with it!

          • @PainToad: Problem fixed. Hard (not soft) reset, paperclip pushed into reset button in base. The last update was the problem.

    • That's outrageous. Their FAQs says you don't need an active subscription to use the box.
What's the issue? You can't login? Have you tried creating another account?

      • Problem fixed. Hard (not soft) reset, paperclip pushed into reset button in base. The last update was the problem.

    • Sounds like the UK 'Now TV' box (was about $20). This was a crippled Roku, but initially you could sideload plex, then they updated and bricked it for non subscribers

Foxtel has raised the basic Foxtel Now package from $10 to $25 and reworked their offerings for the worse in my opinion.

    Apparently they are discontinuing these?
