Google Chromecast 3 $45 (Normally $59) @ EB Games (in-Store Only)

830

They're calling it "Google Chromecast Video" in store and on receipt but it's Google Chromecast 3.
Saw them in a locked-up cabinet but more stock out back.

Please ignore the picture in this link (as it shows v2 online), in store they're selling v3… should of taken a pic sorry.

  • I'm about to head to my local eb to waste free time so I might get this deal.
Is it worth buying if I already have the v2?

    • +1

I don't have one,but I'm stil gonna go ahead and say no; it probably serves the same function as your old one.
      Here's an article I found:
      https://www.trustedreviews.com/news/new-chromecast-2018-blue…

      • +2

        From that article:

Google says the 2018 Chromecast is 15% faster than its predecessor [the V2], and it now supports 1080p streaming at 60 frames per second. And later this year, you’ll be able to add the 2018 Chromecast to groups with other speakers in your home that are connected to Google devices, so you can listen to your music in sync throughout your house.

Other than that, nothing’s changed. Once again, there’s a microUSB connector for power, an HDMI connector, and 802.11ac Wi-Fi support for 2.4GHz and 5GHz.

        • +2

V2 can be linked into speaker groups now as well.

Also the v3 doesn't have the magnet, to support itself and tuck up nicely. It just dangles.

          • +1

@caviar: Wow thanks. Saved me $45 :) I definitely will stick to my v2
            Thanks guys/gals.

          • @caviar: That is why I decided to keep my v2

        • The only real upgrade that's worth it is the Ultra - 4k Streaming + H.265/HEVC support.

  • +2

Is it worth buying if I already have the v1?

    • +2

Not really. It just has 5Ghz Wifi and faster start up apparently. The cache / buffer is actually less. Unless you seriously need one, no point in putting good money in the draw not earning interest.

    • v3 comes with 1080p 60fps support and v2 onwards have 5GHz support as well. Depends if you have having problem with your v1?

      • I don't think my v2 worked with my 5ghz.

        • V2 definitely worked fine with 5GHz. Mine would sit on it quite happily.

      • From my experience the 5GHz is only useful if all your other connected devices are 5GHz, otherwise they're not on the same wifi network and so won't recognise the Chromecast anyway.

        • +2

That shouldn't cause any issues. Provided they're on the same network (note not wifi network) or router, it should still work.

        • +1

I'd guess that your issues were elsewhere. Mainstream routers use the same subnet for both network bands. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to access wired/ethernet devices from at least one of the network bands either.

    • +1

I bought a v3 and it's so much faster and more reliable than my old v1.

      • +1

Exactly my experience at the moment.

      • +1

I like the fact that V1 doesn't dangle off a cable. It's just a simple dongle like a fat USB stick.

    • Nice to have an extra one to use a second TV. Same as having as many Google Home Minis as possible, the first one is the most valuable, with diminishing returns after that.

    • +1

For me the v1 is unusable with most apps, just stutters really bad after 10mins.

Absolutely no issues using the v3 so far so in short yes it's a big difference for me.

    • Depends. I have two TVs and only one Chromecast (v2)…easy maths ;)

    • If you use your Chromecast every day - I would upgrade. Much faster starting streaming and operating speed, plus the higher fps for video makes it a better experience. Of course if your TV is crap it won't make much difference, but I prefer 60fps for video.

  • Is it is worth buying if I have the Chromecast Ultra?
I am so not familiar these many kind of products….

    • +1

I would say no, tech is very similar and the gen3 can't even do 4K.

  • Prob not if you have Ultra.

  • +3

:( just got this yesterday at officeworks after a price match to $46. My inner OzB still thinks I should return it for a refund to get back my dollar

  • +6

V3 is useful if you're getting kayo sports because it will stream at 50fps

  • Does anyone know if EB has the Chromecast Ultra on special instore too? Thanks.

    • +1

I asked and the guy checked and said no. Hope that helps.

      • Thank you, that helps.

    • At EB Games Brisbane Albert Street store yesterday, had them stickered for either $88 or $89 from memory. Might differ from store-to-store?

  • -1

    can officeworks price beat this?

    • +1

Tried with the receipt at OW in Cannington, they won’t do it

      • Reason?

      • +1

thanks i checked too in the city, they wouldnt match it.

they said they need it to be in the catalogue or on website.

        they wont match receipts

  • +1

Thanks OP! Got one at $45

  • Has anyone had confirmation that this is for all stores?

    • I just bought one at EB Belmont here in Perth, so it kinda looks that way.

  • is it worth buying if you already have voda TV

    • +1

If you don't have problems with your voda TV - this isn't worth it.

  • can i ask anyone what is this for?

    • +6

you can ask Google. it will be much faster.

      • hahaha k

    • +3

Turning a dumb tv/monitor into a smart tv (provided you have PC/laptop/smartphone).

  • +1

Anyone know where we can get Chromecast Ultra for a cheaper price? It's still so expensive!

    • Occasionally you see sales for ~$70-$80 but i haven't seen it any cheaper than that.

  • Has anyone ever seen a deal on Chromecast Audio?
The google store in Canada was selling them for $25 last week but the cheapest I can find in Aus is still $50.

    • Hi there we have the Chromecast audio on special at the moment for $46.40 with free shipping.

      Post details here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/427810

      Kind regards Paul Jo

      • Thanks Paul Jo,

I went to that site and now I'm getting spammed on facebook messenger from the store, despite not sharing my facebook details.
I guarantee I will never shop at Apu's World because of this.

        • Sorry to hear that I will look into this asap.

          Kind regards Paul Jo

  • If I want to cast my phone to the TV without a local network, would it work?

  • +1

I found it slow for my liking.
Better get Chromecast Ultra for $30 more or Nvidia Shield.

  • Google sells for $49.. Not a great bargain..

    • Yeh Google running $10 off at the moment. I only happen to stumble on this at EB while I was at Westfield, as JB had sold out.

    • I can't find Google selling for $49

      • Yep looks like that sale ended on their site.

  • Anyone using kayo sport with chromecast?
I'm using v1 and find it very inconsistent, anyone had it with v3 and can comment on their experience

    • From what I've read on a Kayo thread on Whirlpool, CC3 initially had AV sync issues with Kayo which a recent firmware update appears to have resolved.

    • +1

I was looking into getting Kayo over the last few days and have read that Chromecast 3 is much better with Kayo (also Chromecast v3 is the only officially supported version of Chromecast for Kayo).

      • I've found the app itself to be great, just very laggy at times through v1 of cc.

      • Both Chromecast 3 and Chromecast Ultra are supported.

  • +1

Chromecast is getting expensive? I got the ultra for $60 last year.

  • When is the sale ending? Is it nationwide?

    • No idea, otherwise just get Officeworks to price beat Google Store which has them for $49.

  • I have the old Chromecast is it right you have to pay a lifetime subscription of $15? Won’t let me mirror my iPhone for more than 5mins

I’m trying to stream Netflix to it but Netflix gives an error once I try to play it ? Any suggestions??

    • No there's no subscription or anything, sounds like you're having network issues or a bad unit

    • Did you just make up the lifetime $15 subscription part?

  • For a little more a Xiaomi mi box has the same functionality as a Chromecast ultra (4K@60hz) and doesn't need a phone or tablet to drive the tv.

I'll occasionally use my Chromecast ultra via the Google home app but there are times a simple remote gives a better experience.

    • How much is the box?

      • They tend to pop up on ozbargain at around$75-$80 AUD shipped.

  • I saw these at EB Games here in Adelaide today, but they appeared to be selling the V2 not V3. Anyone noticed same ?

    • Which store?

      Go to West Lakes :)

      • Golden Grove.

    • My EB had printed pictures of the box with prices and then the real boxes were in a locked case below, all the printed pictures were of the V2 and I couldn't see the real thing, once I got someone to get one or though they were all V3s

  • +1

    Thanks, JB price matched receipt

  • Confirmed $45. Just bought Geelong CBD.

  • No stock in my locals, went to office works and had them price match bing lees’ $56 price so 5% off that.
