  • why is it cheaper on Rays than on MAc's official website? I know ray's bought Mac

    • +2

Macpac just got purchased by the Super Retail Group (who own Rays) so my guess is they're playing around with pricing at the moment. Doing it off the official site makes it appear less like MacPac is devaluing or discounting their clothing which in turn harms the brand.

      • +1

Except MacPac had this same deal pre Christmas

  • Great jacket, 10/10 would recommend.

    • is it waterproof or resistant?

      • All the features are listed on the product page

        • I honestly read that as feathers.

  • +3

    First post, be nice :)

For first time posters, it's best to avoid telling the community that you are new and asking them to take it easy on you. The “L-plate icon” will be shown to indicate if this is your first post.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:deal_posting_guidelin…

    Welcome to OzB!
took me a few years to be aware of that guideline :)

    • +1

      Okay thanks.

    • +14

I disagree. And it's common enough, to show why.

L plate does little to avoid the burn of a deal that falls flat, accompanied comments as salt. An icebreaker to help proud/shy/any people from the shadows never hurts.

      • +1

Even pros make mistakes when posting a deal, so even more so for first timers it is better to warn approaching drivers that they are still newbies and to take it easy, especially as L plate is not seen by everyone. People see what they want to see and may overlook the L plate, and some see what's not there. They see a word differently.

        • +2

          why shoot the messenger?
(to the five guys that negged me, and to the others who are going to neg me, I love you too)

          I have just posted guidelines
I did not create those guidelines

If you have an issue with those guidelines, why vent out your frustrations on me :)
Sure if you think L plate does little, then should moderators be looking at the guidelines?
Perhaps increase the size of the L (I agree it is tucked in a corner and very easy to miss)

But if cannot change the guidelines or bother to effect a change, and if it does make you feel better, then by all means go ahead and neg me :)

          (current score negative 5)

          • @docians: Well, neither of those five was me.

Like if you don't know how to swim, best to go full on, just in case. Better safe than sorry :)

      • I would argue that a deal should be judged on its own merit, irrespective of the poster. The presence of the L plate or a "please be nice" comment should ideally have no impact on the comments/votes, otherwise it affects the integrity of comments.

Whether or not this actually happens in real life is a different matter…

        • Go ahead and Neg me, that's fine
But just the fact that people feel the need to say "take it easy" makes me wonder what it says about us as a community and the tolerance….

          • @pramki: I reason I felt the need to say it is because the amount of first posts I've seen that phrase been used. Yes I'm a sheep, just thought it was a trivial thing to say really.

            • +3

@Yougotit: If any poster brings an excellent deal to this community such as this one with >100 votes, I am happy for them to write whatever they want ;)

I was very tempted to add the same phrase to my first post many years ago, since it was a bit nerve-racking to post a deal on this website when I was new…

            • +1

@Yougotit: Wasn't intended at your comments at all. It was more a reflection of how we judge/criticise and make posters feel uncomfortable that they feel the need to add "please be nice"

          • +2

@pramki: There seems to be a group of neggers whose only presence on this forum is to jump on the bandwagon whenever a comment gets a neg or two. Don't let that bother you, mate. If negging comments makes some folks happy then let them enjoy themselves, the poor souls.

  • Could someone please advise if the hood packs away or if it's permanently there (like a hoodie)?

    • +1

Permanently there, you cannot unzip it.

      • Thanks for the info, I can't decide if the hood is a good thing or annoying…

        • +10

I have one without a hood and always wished I had bought a hooded one instead

          • @draistlin: Yep first time I wore mine out in the rain, deeply regretted not getting the hood

        • I find it annoying when I sit in my car/on a chair with a headrest but otherwise I prefer having it.

It helps block wind behind my neck or if I get caught In rain.

TBH if the hood came off I’d probably lose it.

        • +1

It depends I suppose, I enjoy wearing a separate hoodie under mine when it gets cold so I prefer no hood as the hoodie underneath gets in the way. The jacket isn't water proof so I wouldn't wear it in the rain anyway.

      • You could still put it in the included "Separate stuff sack" to conceal the hood.

  • Would I size up for this? So if I'm L would I get XL?

    • +2

Other way around, you would get an M.

      • Wish I had have seen this before I ordered…I did it the wrong way around! Should have gone M and ordered L.

        • Call up and cancel, or take it back to the shop and exchange for a different size. Ray's are great when it comes to changing orders or changing sizes.

Rule of thumb for goose down jackets is to go down a size as they are designed to be worn with multiple layers underneath.

          • @c0balt: Huh?

I'm going to need more room inside, so go smaller??

            • +4

@Ulysses31: They don't think it be like it does, but it do.

            • +5

@Ulysses31: They are designed to be worn with multiple layers underneath, so If you are wearing it WITHOUT multiple layers it will be too big.

Unless you are going to Siberia, you will not need to wear multiple layers underneath. Hence, for regular wear in climates like Australia, you would size down.

          • @c0balt:

Rule of thumb for goose down jackets is to go down a size as they are designed to be worn with multiple layers underneath.

Moncler tend to run small and they would be one of the most famous down jackets IMO.

        • If it doesn't fit well i'd be happy to buy it off you! I missed out on the deal and it looked like a good price

    • +1

can confirm size down for this. went L, im normally XL and very happy with a L

  • Damn that's so good. Macpac sold the non-hooded version for 99 over the Xmas period!

    • Excess stock from Hanukkah?

      • I don't think this item was part of the sale at Macpac.

  • Im from England and I assume this is an Australian brand? How would this rank up against similarly priced North Face (or similar branded) coats?

    • It's a Kiwi brand originally, now owned by an Aussie retail group. It's similar to Kathmandu which I think have expanded to the UK? I've never owned anything North Face so can't comment on a direct comparison, but I've always had a good experience with Macpac products and have stayed warm and dry when backpacking through European winters.

    • +3

Macpac is NZ, and is considered one of the premium camping brands. See my comment below about being recently bought out - so take it all with a grain of salt.

Also North Face is considered an average brand in USA, but premium everywhere else - "all in the eyes of the beholder"

      • +4

I wouldn't I would class Macpac as premium, I would put it on par with Mountain Designs and Mont stuff. Premium would be Arctery'x and Patagonia.

Also, I doubt The North Face is an average brand. While they do predominantly now cater to the fashion industry, their steep series clothing range, and tents such as the VE25 show that they still make gear at a top level. Have a quick watch of any of the athletes they sponsor (one of the more recent videos was Queen Maud Land where a group of climbers use their gear in Antarctica for a bunch of first ascents).

        • +1

I feel that North Face is quite overpriced for what you get. It feels really average, especially their footware.

          • @Icecold5000: It's decent if you shop the bargains. I got a couple of water resistant jackets for less than $100 each.

  • -1

I commented similarly in the last deal but was not well received.

Macpac has been bought out by a major company. From previous experience, there is a "risk" of the quality getting worse. Not saying its the case with macpac, but it has happened with similar camping companies in the past few years.

    • +2

I've got a Halo down jacket and I have multiple ones from Ray's that are the cheaper versions (Outrak).

The cheaper versions are better, the fabric is thicker and doesn't look like it came out of the wash all the time. They have thicker zips that flow better. They have a better lining in the pockets. If anything the quality would be getting better, not worse.

  • +1

thanks, been waiting for this deal - purchased!

  • I am 182cm 55kg. Which size should I choose?

    • -1

Stretched child's small? Go eat something.

      • +1

        Thanks. I also know that.
But that would take time. While waiting for that, I still need to go out to find "something" to eat.

      • +5

There's plenty of reasons someone might be 'underweight' (if you want to use the BMI scale which is far from perfect)

Telling them to just eat something is rude and arrogant.

        • -1

Common sense is often arrogant and rude, but we live in PC culture these days…

          • +2

@c0balt: Common sense would tell anyone not to be arrogant and rude.

Telling someone to just eat something is not common sense.

            • @spaceflight: I disagree. People see that something is wrong and care enough for the person to mention that something is wrong - using humor to convey that message is what normal people do.

People who believe being offended is the be all and end all, to my feelings you're more arrogant and rude than what you perceived us as being to the other guy. You've offended me!!

But you shouldn't give a rats if I'm offended - because no one should give a rats apart from PC zombies who use it to signal their virtue over others - which is an objectively incredibly arrogant thing to do.

              • +1

@c0balt: And how do you know something is wrong that can be solved by just eating.

A person may be underweight due to genetics, eating disorder (anorexia), illness (both physical and mental), diabetes, cancer, tuberculosis, gastrointestinal or liver problems.

For example telling an anorexic person to go eat is not caring for them and not going to help them.

              • @c0balt: 100%. Just because someone is offended doesn't mean they are right.

                • +3

                  @Caped Baldy: You're assuming I'm offended, I'm not.

It's possible to disagree with someone and not being offended.

                  • -5

@spaceflight: Because calling something rude and arrogant is the definition of being offended by it.

Then for some reason you couldn’t even see how your last spiel about how telling an anorexic person to eat isn’t going to help them but is actually calling the person who posted their height/weight - anorexic.

At least some others comments used humour and were light about it. You’re just flat out saying that person has a problem now.

                    • +2

                      @c0balt:

Because calling something rude and arrogant is the definition of being offended by it.

                      No it isnt.
Offended is being "upset and angry", I'm neither.

I only pointed out that "There's plenty of reasons someone might be 'underweight'"

Then for some reason you couldn’t even see how your last spiel about how telling an anorexic person to eat isn’t going to help them but is actually calling the person who posted their height/weight - anorexic.

I can't see where I called anyone anorexic, noting was aimed at an individual.

                      A person may

                      For example

You seem to be reading into things more than you need to.

                      • -3

                        @spaceflight: No, it is.

"to cause (a person or group) to feel hurt, angry, or upset by something said or done "

You wouldn't have felt the need to signal your virtue if you weren't. You were upset that others were using humor to the point of being offended enough to speak out against it.

                        https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/offend

You also did suggest that person had a mental or physical problem by commenting that that they did. I can't understand how you would see otherwise, but you people always have the funniest mental gymnastics to try and convince yourself that yyour subjective opinion makes you objectively correct (it never will).

You can sit on your high horse all you like and have like minded people around you all you want. It doesn't make you correct, it just makes your blissfully ignorant to the objective truth.

                        • +1

As I said "Offended is being "upset and angry""

You wouldn't have felt the need to signal your virtue if you weren't
                          You were upset that

How do you know how I feel? Are you telepathic?

You also did suggest that person had a mental or physical problem by commenting that that they did.

Where have I said that a person has a mental or physical illness?

You can sit on your high horse all you like

c0balt you're the one on a high horse copying and pasting a dictionary definition and trying to tell me how my people "always have the funniest mental gymnastics" and how I apparently feel and how I am apparently upset.

                  • +1

    Ordered! Thanks so much OP!!!!!!!!!

  • Can anyone with this jacket please advise how small they squish down to in the stuff sack? And approximately how much it weighs (noting the features say 166g of down).

I’m backpacking South America later this year, ending up in Montreal for Christmas and this seems like it could be a good buy for the trip.

    • +1

Pretty small as it comes with a little bag about 10x18cm. It's the kind of bag you put a sleepingbag in

  • -1

Needed a hooded one. Can I return the one I purchased on Boxing day? Is Macpac good with returns?

  • Thanks, ordered for SO

  • +1

That's a really good price for the hooded version. Usually the non-hood is $99 and the hooded $50 more.

I have the non-hooded and ver yhappy with it, other than the occasional feather sticking out of it.

  • +1

    No more XS in stock.

  • Got mine & Thermal Socks delivered in 5 days…Ordered just before Christmas & received swiftly…

Nice jacket & socks direct from MacPac

  • +1

Late to the game. Nearby stores don't have S in stock :(

One or more products in your cart are not available for delivery. You can try to pick up in-store for FREE.

  • Can you ski in these?

    • +1

Definitely not, they're water resistant not water proof.

  • So does “Repels moisture” mean heavy rain waterproof or just light drizzle/snow?

    • Doubt it can take heavy rains. Jacket will be drenched from the down absorbing all the water

  • +1

    Excellent post, thanks Yougotit!

  • Any deals on thermals?

Can I return my Macpac halo jacket if I bought in mid december and havent used it?
