This isn't a deal if it's just standard practice now.

    • -2

It is because for those that are risk adverse, they now don't need to buy extended warranty for the 4th and the 5th year coverage. It's now included as part of manufacturer warranty coverage.

The practice was "internal/not advertised" according to OP. Toyota was trying to have the cake and also eat it, ie. bow to industry pressure by unofficially honouring warranty claim for 4th/5th year and still charging customers for extended warranty over these two years.

      • I get why, but that'd defeat the purpose - part of having longer warranties is as advertising/to attract buyers. Having an unadvertised, internal-only policy really meant they were incurring the expenses of a longer warranty period, without any of the positive PR.

Now the "market leader" needs to adopt android auto / apple car play…..

      • +14

        Because quantity doesn't equal quality.

          • +8

@bowtiehoon: I have always found Toyotas it be poor quality. They may be reliable but who want a car that keeps going after 20 years but bits started falling off from day one ?

I have driven probably 15+ <5000k Toyotas and almost always found bits falling of or broken clips etc. Its just cheap plastic inside. I haven't had this with Hyundai for example its just Toyota that so bad.

            • @Yabadabadoo: damn, I stand corrected, guess they are not "definitely" reliable anymore…the Koreans have moved up the list it seems.

              https://www.news.com.au/technology/innovation/motoring/motor…

              • @bowtiehoon: Looks like the Koreans are winning. Ist, 2nd and third

"The 2018 initial quality study results were stunning. The top three brands were South Korean. Genesis — Hyundai’s new luxury brand launching here later this year — took first place, followed by Kia and Hyundai itself."

“It’s the result of relentless hard work, focus and dedication by the Koreans,” Amodeo says.

              • +2

@bowtiehoon: Jaguar, was shit, still shit, always shit.

They can use this new tag line if they want…

        • +1

no it doesn't, but im sure a Lamborghini is of better quality than a Toyota, well id hope so, but that doesn't make them Market Leaders. Like them or loath them Toyota sell the most cars, so they lead the market in sales….

          • +4

@jbone999: I think we are talking about different things…
I don’t think a Lamborghini is more reliable than a Toyota
It’s def more fun though :)

          • +3

            @jbone999:

im sure a Lamborghini is of better quality than a Toyota

I mean it looks pretty, but one is going to be a lot better off after 300,000ks of lazy maintenance and kids all over the seats

    • +3

I 2nd this, it’s main reason I didn’t buy a Toyota last year and the last couple of cars purchased before were Toyotas. Toyota US has it but not Toyota Australia. They need to get their crap together…

      • It's strange that they don't, but having said that a $400 aftermarket option will be better than most factory head units. I wouldn't rule out a car completely just for that.

        • Except you often fit an aftermarket head unit in Toyota's. Some require a whole new fascia as well to replace a double DIN head unit.

But I guess this is true of a lot of automakers these days.

          • -1

@MrBear: Replacing a head unit id dead simple - even with a new fascia (which usually means unclipping the old one and clipping on the new one, a 10 second job.

            • +1

@Spam Service: Depends on the car. New Corolla adopts a different design, not just a simple fascia change (screen comes up from the dash)

  • Any cashrewards ? Will shopback price match ?

Hmmm, Kia gives 7 years + roadside service AND 15K km service intervals. Back to the drawing board Toyota …

    • +5

This. Got a 2018 Picanto with all of that plus an additional 3 years warranty, in total 10 years.

      • +19

        For a 2019 Kia Picanto S:

Service Interval (whichever occurs first) Price
        1 Year or 15,000 km $248.00
        2 Years or 30,000 km $429.00
        3 Years or 45,000 km $302.00
        4 Years or 60,000 km $470.00
        5 Years or 75,000 km $280.00
        6 Years or 90,000 km $541.00
        7 Years or 105,000 km $297.00

Not exactly cheap servicing there for a 1.25L car… First 5 years a Corolla will cost $875 to service, vs $1729 for that Picanto

        Corolla 6yr - $760, 7yr - $252. So Corolla over 7yrs is $1887, vs $2567 for the Kia

And you say Toyota need to go back to the drawing board?!

        • $17k + $1729 < corolla + servicing

          • +5

            @jasonc: Would you not expect a $17k, 1.25L car to be cheaper to service than a $28k, 2.0L car…?

          • @jasonc: Seriously Jason? Are you comparing a Picanto with a Corolla.

Might as well bring back a Daihatsu so we can have an even playing field, ahhahahahha

    • +2

New Corolla - $175 for first 5 services, every 12m/15,000km
      CHR/New Camry - $195 for first 5 services, every 12m/15,000kms

That trend started about 2yrs ago when the CHR came out. Only diesels needing 6m intervals, but every new model petrol coming out is coming with 12m intervals (so far)

      • RAV4 petrol is 6 months intervals, no idea why. 185 bucks every 6 months.

        • +1

Yep but it's old. New model in May should be different

          • @spackbace: Good, will test drive the 2.5L non-CVT.
Any plans to implement Apply car play in the near future?

            • @vash12: No idea. US model has CarPlay.

Trainers told us a few months ago that Toyota saw no need to extend the advertised warranty, yet here we are.

They told us there's no need for CarPlay/Android Auto, but who knows lol

I'd recommend looking at the hybrid model. Hybrid will only be getting bigger over the coming years

              • @spackbace: Sorry but electric is where it's at.

Hybrid will only be good for those travelling super long distances on the regular.

                • @Gorian4: Sure, electric is great and I'd love a Tesla.

But useless if you're charging off the grid at your house, lets be honest.

              • @spackbace: Might consider the hybrid but depends on the price difference.
And also hybrid model comes with CVT….. yuk

                • +1

@vash12: All new hybrid models are about $1500 more than the petrol equivalent.

                  It's a no-brainer really!

          • @spackbace: Yea, my 2012 one was serviced every 6 months and it was pain as my car did less than 10k per year. After 3 year, it was on dealers 3 year extended warranty.
I went to local mechanic after 6 year extended warranty to see one of rear shocker was leaking. As per mechanic, it didn't look new and either dealer didn't notice it or didnt notify me if they had to cover it in warranty.

      • How about dem Prados?

        • Yep. Dem diesels. Dem need more frequent servicing.

    • Kia only give you roadside if you service your car with them.

      • Is that because they need roadside assistance more often?

  • +3

not a bargain they should do it a long time ago.

  • +3

    Oh what a feeling! yawn

  • What is the CAP price servicing KM?

  • lol, I managed to get 3 years extended warranty for free on top of the default 5 years warranty for my Mazda.

    • How did you do that?

    • +2

Is it manufacturer warranty or some crappy 3rd party extended warranty?

      • It's from Mazda dealer. We just negotiated price for new car and they threw in the extended warranty.
The warranty is definitely from them and not 3rd party. But it comes with a condition that it's only valid to me as being the owner of the vehicle and if I keep servicing my car at Mazda service centre. I'm not sure whether it can be "Any" Mazda service centre though.

The extended warranty is not transferable if I sold the car to a new owner.

        • +9

Seems like an aftermarket warranty and not a manufacturer warranty - manufacturer warranty is transferable & applies to any dealer you want to take it to

        • +1

it's only valid to me as being the owner of the vehicle and if I keep servicing my car at Mazda service centre

They'll definitely be getting their money's worth if you need to service it at the dealer for 8 years. Looks like the dealer got the bargain on this one!

    • What are the conditions of this warranty and what are the claim limits?

  • Best price on a new basic camry?

    • +1

need the optional dent in the corner of the rear bumper?

  • +2

Well that's a bit shitty. I bought a new Corolla 3 weeks ago.

    • +29

Buy another one and take old one back with receipt

    • +3

Ring customer service and complain , they will be expecting the phone calls , you could surprised with the outcome.

    • You should recall it

    • +1

      Link pls??

  • +2

Damn just bought a new Camry only 3 years ago

  • +5

Will they backdate this offer to May 2015? Asking for a friend.

  • -1

ill come back when life time warranty exists

  • A bit too late. The market has moved on

  • +1

"Toyota, the market leader, has extended their warranties to catch up"
Not quite, Kia have been doing standard 7 years warranties for years

    • +6

That's agreeing with OP though, hence the catching up

      • +1

Been edited since (said 5 year when I did the comment)
Also Kia warranty is the entire vehicle for 7 years, not just drivetrain

  • +5

    Market leader in recalls.

    • +2

Nah, that honor went to Mercedes Benz this year. Considering the amount of cars they sell and their range, that is abysmal.

    • +2

They're actually not, but even so a manufacturer recalling a car isn't always a bad thing. Brands with a reputation to keep will recall and fix issues, cheap brands that just don't care won't recall and will deny the issue at hand.

      • This! Mandatory recalls are issued by government agencies, voluntary recalls are issued by the manufacturer.
Either of those recalls will not happen unless the manufacturer is forthcoming and reporting those known concerns to relevant agencies.

  • +1

Nice!! In time for the new RAV4.

  • Competitors are now offering 7 yr unlimited warranty.

    • *some competitors

  • "market leader" :D

    • +4

They do sell far and away more vehicles than Mazda and Hyundai, our #2 and #3. So yes, market leader.

      • -2

Take away cashed up tradies and they are no longer market leaders.

        • +1

They're almost double Mazda. Even if you took away their top-selling Hilux, they'd still be ahead with the Corolla and all the SUVs. More, if you cancel out the cashed up tradies' BT-50s.

  • +4

You know I love you, Spack, but this isn't really a deal. It's just bringing Toyota into line with other manufacturers.

While it is good news, it's hardly a deal.

PS: came in for the inevitable "bought X amount" and "used gift card/cashrewards" posts and was not left disappointed. :D
