  • What makes it surface compatible only…?
    Or isnt it…

    • +1

Not sure what your question is

      • I guess does it only work with surface or does it work with any laptop the same way as every other generic usb3 docking station

        • It is exclusive to surface family as far as I know

        • +12

It connects via the charging slot on the side of the surface/surface book. So it's not compatible with mainstream laptops

    • English?

    • +3

Its only compatible with the surface pro due to the connection, its not USB, its a connection specific to the surface devices only, visible in last photo on listing.

      • Thanks, I can see it now

      • Proprietary connections. It's how they get to fleece you on accessories. They took a leaf from Apple's playbook.

        • It makes use of its proprietary connection but unlike Apple Microsoft also allow use of the USB 3.0 and USB-C ports for Docks. You do not have to use the proprietary connector.

          • @reslo: If you want to buy a charger you will have to buy theirs. Which they will price as they see fit.

If you want to use a power bank to charge the Surface, too bad.

At least you can buy 3rd party iPad/iPhone chargers, though they will still cost more because of the licensing Apple charges.

            • @lostn: My Surface Book 2 charges just fine on its USB-C port, maybe its just the Book that can?

              • @reslo: Probably. Since the Pro doesn't have a C port, and only an A port. Things don't normally charge off an A port.

  • What plug adapter does it included? US?

    • Good question , I am not sure . I can report back when I receive it.

    • +3

They have detachable figure 8 sockets AC connections.

    • +2

I bought this last year from Amazon US and it comes with the US plug. You will need a plug adapter or an Australian plug 8 socket cable. Its power adapter is rated for between 100-240v, so it's not an issue with Australian voltage.

  • -1

Does the voltage compatible? Does it come with Australia plug?

  • $200 for a multi-port hub? Dreamin.

    • +2

Same price also gets you a keyboard cover.

  • Is this good for docking?

    • For that price, one would hope so.

Really good device if you have a surface product.

  • This has pretty much never been discounted to this level - been paying attention for the past few years.

Only thing is that people have had issues with the ports (in particular connecting with external monitors).

So tempted, but might see if they release a new iteration with the hopefully NEW design SP this year…

    But a damn good price!

    • I have one in the office and had horrible trouble connection to an4k monitor for a longtime, however I believe there wAs an update recently that fixed this as it’s been flawless for the last month. I take mine off the dock multiple times a day and reconnect

    • I got two at this price new off ebay approx this time last year. Actually around $170 after the ebay discounts at the time.

FYI I personally have hit an issue where it wont connect to my Dell monitor. Turns out its listed under incompatible (so what am I meant to do, just not use the monitor?).

Support site says MS is working on it. That was > 1 year ago and nothing since.

      • +1

I work for a reseller which happens to be a MS Surface corporate partner, and there's a never ending stream of external monitor issues. The mini displayports on the docks appear not to be 100% within spec and cause all sorts of problems (flickering displays, displays not initialising) with passive Displayport adapters.

It might not be a guaranteed fix for you, but we've seen some "incompatible" monitors work ok when an Active Mini Displayport adapter is used instead.

  • Is this the same product as: https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/p/surface-dock/8qrh2npz0s0p?…

Will it work with the Surface Go?

    • I believe they are, I started my research from the link you just posted.

  • I grabbed one of these for sub $100 for my Surface Pro https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BELKIN-DOCKING-STAND-DUAL-VIDEO-…
Works a treat, and works with any other laptop too. Used Lenovo and HP with no issues.

  • As an alternative I use this:
    https://www.lenovo.com/au/en//accessories-and-monitors/docki…

I got it when Lenovo had 40% off accessories. It was ~$150. It was the top of the line option at that time with DP and HDMI. It works really well.

If I was to buy a new one then I would go for this for:
    https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/accessories-and-monitors/dockin…
It has USB 3.1, USB-C, dual monitor support (each monitor can be DP or HDMI).

    • How do you charge the surface then? Using USB3 or original charger?
