  • Do these make good gifts, or terrible ones? Do people use them? Like them?

    • +10

These make fantastic gifts in my opinion, you can really use your imagination and have some fun with these. The ones we had printed from over a year ago have not faded at all despite frequent use + dishwasher cleaning.
Kids also love to have their own personalised mugs, doesn't just have to be used for hot drinks!

      • +2

thank you. kids personalised is a good idea.

        • +3

i previously bought them for my 3 kids as I was sick of them getting a new glass/mug every time they wanted a drink and "I don't know which glass is mine".

personalised mugs have mostly worked and excessive glass usage has reduced significantly.

Depends what you put on it and who you give it to.

I used this to make a gag gift for a friend recently and it was well-received. Putting a family photo on a mug is probably a boring gift idea, but if you treat it as $5 to print whatever you want on a mug, it's pretty good.

      • thank you, yes i see much gag potential. what did you put on your friends?

        • +1

A picture and quote from The Simpsons that has become a bit of a running joke/motto.

If you have a look back through the previous deals of this mug from both Big W and Harvey Normans, people have posted some excellent and funny ideas

      • We dressed our dogs up in Christmas outfits, took photos, printed on mugs, gave to my husbands parents for Christmas (they look after our dogs a lot and really like them). The gift was well received.

I can vouch for the quality, bought 4 around 3 years ago, washed in dishwasher and put in microwave.
      No issues at all.

I'll order some more this time.
Hope the quality is the same as last time.

Oh, the mug itself is made in China by the way…as usual

      • that's pretty good resistance then, thank you.

    • +2

Yes they make great gifts, have given in the past (years ago) and they are still going strong with neat unique pictures for the individuals!

      • thank you. what kind of pictures did you go for?

        • +1

Depending on the person, some were for family some for friends so what meant most to them - ie kids/pets/family/other interests etc

These are usually $8 from Kmart which had a one day turn around we looked at HN mugs over xmas but said they had a 20 day turnaround so just went with kmart. Also the kmart machines were 100 times easier to use

      • $8 is their regular price but harvey norman usually charges $20?! or are they always 'on sale' at hn?

that is a very good turn around time.

    • +1

These are pretty good quality and the pictures turned out really well. I've given out a few of them as gifts. I personally prefer the ones from Kmart, they're $7. But you need to go into the store and design them yourself and they're ready within 24 hours. They offer a lot more templates for mug designs though, rather than just the one photo printed onto the mug.

      • thank you.

kmart's everyday price is $7? - harvey's everyday price is a bit rich then?!

so you can't order kmart ones online? that's a big downside.

Great for parents, particually new parents or parents of young kids.
Source: Have a 2 year old, love my baby face mug and so does my Son.

      • is he still a baby? can he tell it's himself on the mug?

        • +2

He could at 12 months after you tell him, he remembers it and points it out every time and gets very excited by it.

  • +2

Gonna out my mug, on a mug.

    • +3

will it look surreal when you drink out of it?

oh oh oh i just had a mug idea!

a mug, which has on it photo of myself, drinking from a mug, which has on it a photo of myself, drinking from a mug, which has on it a photo of myself, drinking from a mug….

      mug inception.

    • Hmm, cringed a bit at the last one.

      • Some revisionist history will cure that.

    • Do you put Jewce in the bottom one?

    • +1

all those references went over my head sorry

  • What if image with transparent background so will they print as white color?

    • +5

      The cup will become trasparent.

      • +1

        Like transparent aluminium?

    • +1

The software HN use doesn't recognise transparency. I made a "black" mug with areas of #000000 and it printed "black" on the "black" because the "black mug" wasn't actually "black".

I suspect your mileage may vary with white, however, as it's less often they'd print white on a white mug.

        Wife made them with paint!

  • Great deal. I happened to be near a HN so went in and ordered some mugs for gifts!

Guys FYI the standard mug whole image which is supposedly more expensive is also going for $5
    https://www.harveynormanphotos.com.au/collections/mugs-drink…

    • what is the difference sorry?

      • +2

Full image wraps around top to bottom. I think standard one has a white border top and bottom.

  • +2

Mugs sometimes disappear from the office cupboard. As a joke I took a photo of the shelf in the cupboard with all the other mugs and printed that on a mug, so it looks a bit like a stealth mug.

Unfortunately I forgot to pick the full wrap option so it has white borders at the top and bottom. It was still mildly amusing though. :)

Collected my mugs today (went for the 'full photo' option) and they look great. Great quality and at $5, can't complain. Wife loved them.
