Optus X Start 4G Plus 5" Fullview $39.00 @ Woolworths | $39.50 @ Coles

30

Half price deal. Originally $79.00
The best price you can get for a 5", quad core, 1GB ram phone

The phone also has manual operation on taking photo. Somewhat fun if you like it.

This phone is in fact the same brand and model to Telstra Essential Plus (RRP$99.00)and Vodafone E9(RRP$99.00)
It seems also works with Optus's dealers sim.
Tested Amaysim, Coles Mobile and Catch mobile, all works straight away, other dealers no sim to test.

anyone know what the screen quality is like? or it it's costly to unlock these phones?

    • Horrendous - no other word needed. I have one, I thought it was broken but the ones in the shop were the same.

      • Pretending to have iPhone screen quality on a phone this price is a bit too much, isn’t it?

  • This range of phones are nothing great, just cheap.

Got the apparently equivalent Telstra Essential Plus from free Telstra deal here - wouldn't pay for one! Poor screen viewing, sluggish, low RAM, $80 to unlock with Telstra.

Target had these at this price for a while, now $79.

Also still available Optus X Spirit 4G Prepaid Mobile Phone $59 (+ $50 Gift Card for New Customers with a $30 Recharge) @ Kmart - same price (after using gift card) when recharge with $30 by 4/2. Kmart has misrepresented the specs, as discussed in deal.

  • can you still get this promo with this $39 Optus X Start 4G phone from woolies $50 Gift Card for New Customers with a $30 Recharge or does it need to be the spirit model?

    • This model not listed in Optus $50 gift card promotion
X Spirit is, as commented just above. Requires recharge with $30 by 4/2.
(Model names get confusing with X Smart, X Start, X Spirit)

    1GB ram…

its like puting a 1L NA petrol engine in a 7 seater SUV…

    • +1

It would be more like finding a brand new 7 seater SUV for $7000, off course corners were cut.

      It is a $39 phone.

  • no wonder they are trying to get rid of them

  • this phone is very weak, not good for secondary/young kids, but ok for emergent voice call backup or mobile hotspot. Note, at some remote area you get only optus signal but not telstra.

  • 1G Ram?? Super painful… Should be free!!

  • very weak phone ,will heat up easily

  • Should I buy this one to use to run Google Maps on my car?

    • +1

definitely not, screen angles are too bad, you won't see anything.

    • Well, possibly, if you mounted it in the right place.
Display contrast is what you'd expect on a cheap phone.

Note that it comes with "go" edition of Maps, ie it runs in the browser.
But you can install the full version.

    • Thanks. I am using a Samsung S5 for that purpose, but it is too slow

      • This will definitely be slower. Flash a custom ROM on your S5, it did wonders for performance for me.

        • Thanks. Which ROM do you suggest for the S5?

I got this for an spare/emergency phone for this price around Christmas.

    • It runs surprising well for the specs. Android Go does a good job. Oreo is nice on a phone this cheap, a whole Marshmallow and Nougat phones that are basically EoL in this price range.

    • screen is absolutely brutal. The viewing angles are horrendous, off square it fades to white very quickly. I thought it was broken, but the ones in the shop had the same problems.

I can't recommend it with that screen.

    • As a very light phone user, I really like my Telstra Essentals plus which I unlocked for $15 @ mobile mania toongabie.

GO works very well but sometimes you need a usa google account to obtain the GO version (as not provided in aust (eg yahoo mail)
To do this create multiple google accounts in different regions and then simply authenticate them all on the phone. Its a nice simply way of bypassing Play regional restrictions

If an app complains that it is not compatible with the device model, try installing a PC version of android where you can switch and change phone hardware profiles to find a compatible device and use saveapk to dump it onto your google drive so it can be installed on the phone

To ensure the device runs super fast i have blocked all Play updates and not taken any android updates and install only trusted popular apps
I expect I will likely need to bin the phone in about a year when the next sub $50 bargain arrives

I agree the screen aint great but to me its acceptable; and battery is much better than I expected at 5 days on standby

      Markus

  • Does anyone know if this phone has roaming available? I'm looking for a cheap phone to transfer my Australian Sim (Optus) into to receive text messages when I travel and pick up a local sim card into my regular iPhone.

  • Poor phone, worse carrier .. :-( . !!

  • anyone know who can unlock these phones for cheap ?
