910

Hi Everyone!
Long time lurker, first time poster,
Just noticed this deal today looking for a new school laptop,
Ended up paying below 1200 after negotiation,
It’s the cheapest price on the market even before you include the added Type Cover (worth $200 RRP)
Picked up two today,
Edit : If you don’t want to negotiate, Microsoft are offering $1249 for the same bundle, credits to ASHGOON,
The link is here for that https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/p/surface-pro-6-platinum-128…
Hope this helps and don’t be afraid to ask any questions,
Thanks for Reading!

  • Price in title

  • And upload receipt just incase can match

    • How should I do that mate? What platform do you suggest?

      • You go to My Account and there is a files option to upload a file.

Under View there is a tab called Files.

        • +2

but, black out personal infos otherwise people can see them haha

  • P.I.T

    • +1

      Is that really an abbreviation…

      • +2

It's an initialism, and maybe an acronym.

  • Thanks for that mate

  • -6

Is this the same device (without Type Cover) for $1,119: https://www.becextech.com.au/catalog/microsurfpro2017i5128gb…

    • +3

      Don’t think so buddy,
That has 4 GB of Ram whereas this one has 8,
The models are confusing but good find anyway!

      • +3

You're right: it's also the 7th gen processor while JB has the 8th gen.

  • +1

Tempted to upgrade my SP3 but no usb c in this sigh

    • +1

Yeah it sucks, but it’s a great computer for work or school, but you’re best off waiting until they add usb-c I reckon, which should be the 7

      • Who knows though because we've been expecting the next generation to have usb c since generation 2

  • Nice price if <$1200 per bundle unit (only if they still come with the Surface Pen).

Also available from The Good Guys and Harvey Norman (http://staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=surface+pro+bun…).

Pay less with discounted gift cards (eg JB-HiFi, Harvey Norman), although that means no extra credit card shopper protection if you intend to pay with a credit card that has one.

  • +3

available from the microsoft store for $1249 with the cover i think (doesn't go into much tech detail!!)…

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/p/surface-pro-6-platinum-128…

    • Yeah that’s actually a really good find mate,
      I’ll change the title,
      I paid $1200 but that’s a good as deal,
      Cheers!

      • -2

20% off if you have a student email ending with edu with unidays making it $999!

        • Really?

        • +1

Mate it doesn’t work I tried it,
          Good find though

        • +1

Unfortunately its 20% off select models, so you can get the Surface Pro 6 without a keyboard but with a "free" case for $1079. Adding the case brings it up to $1329.15 even with the discount.

          OP's deal is better.

      • Just be sure to check which typecover it is. The Microsoft looks like the cheaper black one whereas the JB seems to be the signature Alcantara.

    • I bought this yesterday after finding this deal here. I price matched at HN so I could get it straight away and I love it, it's totally perfect for studying. So, thanks for your tip! :)

  • +1

I don't care about the type cover. I want the pen to use the tablet as a drawing tool :((

    • The Pen is inexpensive compared to the cover, but I feel your pain man.
Not many bundles include the pen unfortunately though

  • +3

Uhh you work for JB and you negotiated down to $1,200? something doesn't make sense, are you associated or not?

    • +2

      I’m not,
Someone must have associated me accidentally or the box may have been selected already,
I’m trying to fix it up,
      Thanks

      • Someone must have associated me accidentally or the box may have been selected already,

The someone was you. :) All fixed.

    • -1

yea thats what i was wondering too.

  • +1

I have this exact package. Got it in December for working away from the office. First time I've had a windows tablet. Worklife changing.
It could only be better if it had LTE inbuilt. I cannot understand why that is missing from most of the range.

    • Yeah I agree completely, it’s amazing isn’t it

  • +1

Throughout uni I switched between the Surface Pro and the 12" MacBook. They're both great. I've been using the 12" MacBook for a couple of years now due to iOS development, but when the Surface Pro gains Thunderbolt 3 I'll be making the switch. Shame it didn't come with the 6th iteration.

  • that's pretty cool, but any chance of a similar deal on the 256GB?

    • I heard there will be from a Harvey Norman employee, everywhere else should get it too, around $1575. No word on the date but my friend said soon. You can preorder it though

  • Is this the black version of the Surface Pro 6 ?

    • I was searching for the same… the black one starts at 256GB and can't find an offer on it though.

    • Platinum I think

  • Not commenting on this specific post, but seeing a LOT of long time lurkers first time posting. General rule of the internet is one post history equals dodgy. Here at ozbargain out seems to be a badge of honour.

    • So true

    • +2

why don't you join the club and go for your first deal?

  • Got mine few days ago for 1299 @ jb

  • Can you play games with this or is it just for productivity. I want an all in one gaming, productivity, study, personal laptop

    • It can support gaming but it’s not the greatest, I’d say if you want all round get the dell, But the surface does all things besides game at a ridiculously high level

    • I don't get it. If you get a gaming laptop, you can do all that other stuff.

    • +1

It plays LoL exceptionally well at high

    • If you want all in one get a Dell Xps15

  • +3

Geez, no USB-C? Better wait for next years version :(

    • Get a cable that has usb3 on one end and usbc on the other. problem solved.

      • Can't charge the Surface that way.

  • struggling to decide between this and iPad pro

    • -6

IPad pro blows the even the best surface pro out of the water, own both and surface just collects dust.

      • +6

Totally depends on what you need it for.

      • +2

        No file management system though

      • Mate, get out. When runs a full fledged windows and has pc specs. One uses a mobile processor and a phone os.

        • -5

          You guys are obviously morons,

          https://www.tomsguide.com/us/new-ipad-pro-benchmarks,news-28…

If you need a shitty windows feature just run a remote desktop client or vm ware client. IPad pro can do everything you need it to and no bullshit cortana popping up, with windows updates and oh yeah now reserving hard drive space for their updates.

          • @debaron541: Wow at the risk of creating a further storm - these are just computers to achieve some purpose, but people on both sides react like you are criticising their children.

I have both an iPad and a Dell XPS laptop. They both have their strengths and weakness and it’s horses for courses. (Storage vs battery life comes to mind)

There are times when I want to move large files or have a mouse for precision - and my laptop is better for that, but then when I want to read a small document/newspaper and need to travel light, the iPad shines.

I’m on my iPad doing this, but will swap to the laptop shortly to research some electronic parts.

      • +3

The iPad is good for browsing the internet and watching YouTube. The surface does everything the iPad does better and it functions like a full desktop pc.

Let's be honest, the iPad is just an XXL sized iPhone with zero functionality

        • -2

The surface is slow as hell and ipad can do everything and it is way faster and way more reliable, not to mention it has twice the battery life.

          • @debaron541: Nah the ipad is a child's toy. If you need to get work done get an XPS or X1 Carbon :) See I can generalise too!

            • -1

@[Deactivated]: I have an xps 13, it's a hot piece of junk, If I want to be work done I use a desktop workstation like a professional, can even vpn to it from anywhere in the world and work flawlessly using my fibre internet connection. <MOD: Remove accusation>

              • @debaron541: Strange, my XPS 13 is fine for coding/working on. I'm not going to encode and edit 4k videos on it, but it is a good piece of kit for what it is.

        • -3

The surface pro is not a full sized desktop and does not perform anything like one.

  • man I just got a new job and I need the i7 version…. but its like…. 3k omg….

    • +1

      Afterpay?

      • Yes and no, i rather find a good deal for it then go on finance or afterpay. I rarely pay retail for technology. I have the 4th gen i5 but its not cutting it for photoshop or after effects. :(

        • after effects might be more about your GPU than CPO. Not sure what Photoshop needs these days as a primary resource, but a shed load of RAM use to fix most problems.

  • +2

    Hey there,

First time comment, long time user.

I keep reading mention of 7th and 8th Gen. How best am I to know which one Microsoft, Harvey or JB HiFi are selling?

Eager to pick one up today from a store in Brisbane and don’t want to get stitched up.

Also, how are you finding warranty and years usage out of these devices?

    Cheers
    Tom

    • +3

      Hi Tom,
Most of it should be in the specs,
Just make sure do your research and you’re set!
This is a 8, if I were you I’d buy the bundle off Microsoft for $1249 because it’s a very reputable store at a great price,
      Good luck

      • +1

Thanks for the rapid response, really appreciate it.

Only other query my good friend - the keyboard cover, is it backlit?

        Thanks!

        Ttt

        • +2

          Yes it is,
It works very well but the Macs is probably Marginally better,
          Enjoy your new laptop!

          • +1

@BraphB: Sending you much gratitude on this Sunday morning.

            Thanks

    • +3

      This thread was really wholesome

      • +4

You betcha; that’s the spirit of Ozbargain!

  • Thanks BraphB, can confirm that JB hi Fi was able to match the price of Microsoft online promo price at $1249 (free black type cover included) even though they listed $1349 without type cover. I topped up $50 to upgrade the free black type cover to burgundy as a gift for the missus.

    • Nice touch Mrsonky!

  • Are these at all usable on your lap? Like on the train?

I realise there are probably purposes to the names laptop and surface

    • Tried it. The answer is yes

  • +1

If you don't mind the NFL logo like me then these keyboards are great in value, they have backlit and comparable with my Pro 6
Grabbed mine for $65 including P&H
    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B01JZ7JY3W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i…

    • How did you get it for $65?, it shows $87.38 for me.

      • They have different logo at different price. The one i got before was the aboriginal (sorry not a NFL guy) but even at $87.38, i think it still is a lot cheaper than here

  • how did you manage to get a further discount below 1200?

    • Negotiation My Friend

  • No offence to the OP at all but these devices are overpriced junk.

-Only have a 120GB, which if your kids are like mine will fill that up in no time.
-They break easy (costs around $500-600 to replace a screen if not covered by warranty), the metal chassis/base of the unit is so tight against the glass screen that a slight bump will crack the touch screen.
-Have a 1 out of 10 breakdown/rebuild option for upgrade or self repair.
-Firmware updates often fail to apply/reboot and the CPU/Fan keeps running, kids then close the device up thinking its off and chuck in their bag, then it overheats.

I'm sure there are better options out there than this, save yourselves grief.

    • -They are expensive, but they're very portable which is where the price comes.
-Has an SD Card Slot. Can also use OneDrive
-No doubt fragile, so good protection is essential.
      -Definitely not user serviceable.
-This specific model has no fans and is passively cooled.

    • you're not wrong with the memory - hope microsoft/jbhifi offers a similar deal for the 256, i feel that should be the minimum

      • I try to buy low GB laptops. Forces me to delete or backup files to cloud services.

    • Based on our experience at work (we went through heaps), I 100% agree. I still have a SP4, but everyone else's became junk & they moved on.

  • I believe these are great tablet/laptop combo. Nice deal with the keyboard, Op. I purchased one in Nov last year Black i7, 16GB RAM with 512GB for $2100. Black keyboard for another $140 and Cobalt pen for $95. I wanted powerful and portable Windows tablet. I am very happy with my purchase.

  • It looks like ShopBack has a 1.5% cashback on surface products. So would get back about $15 if you buy from Microsoft.

  • cash rewards on microsoft website is 5.6% and this is 8th generation processor.

    • Only 1.4% on surface products

  • Okay I am going to buy one of these. What do you guys think is the better deal JB or Microsoft. I have to buy on credit card as it's a business purchase and can't take advantage of gift card discounts.

    • Try to negotiate with JB,
      If they can’t beat it,
      Go to Microsoft

  • Hmmmm. This or MacBook Pro 2017?

    • This,
      Cheaper,
More portable and nearly as good if not better

    • Windows > iOS anyday in my opinion

      • Its not iOS. macos on the macbook

  • Hi team,

Wondering if people have been using this only as a tablet? How's the experience?

I'm looking to buy a tablet, was thinking of getting an ipad but can't decide considering I've been always an android user and might not be able to deal with Apple's limitations…
